An independent military unit composed of Xin and his TrueCompanions. The Fei Xin Unit (Hi Shin Unit in Japanese) was formed from the survivors of the Keiyou Campaign following Xin's promotion to 100-Man Commander, and has since proven decisive to Qin's victory in countless campaigns and has taken the heads of numerous renowned generals. Given special privileges in the hopes of becoming one of Qin's key armies in the future, it has shown [[AlmightyJanitor abilities beyond that of average armies]], and currently stands as a [[BadassArmy 15000-Man Unit]].

* BadassArmy: A highly personalized unit consisting of veterans and elite soldiers.
* BigDamnHeroes: The Fei Xin love to show up at just the right moment to turn the tide. As an independent unit, this is what they are designed for, to put it plainly: to show up where the fight is at its thickest and make the situation advantageous to Qin.
* BoringButPractical: The Yu Feng and Yue Hua Units are both units of elite noblemen trained to the battlefield from birth. The Fei Xin Unit is composed of ordinary people that left their farms to join the fight. And they're arguably the most effective of the three.
* {{Determinator}}: Despite not having the pedigree of the other special units, the Fei Xin more than makes up for it in sheer guts. Unlike the other elite units that are composed of mainly highly-trained noblemen, ''every single member'' of the Fei Xin Unit started as a foot soldier, and climbed their way to the top through sheer skill.
* EliteMooks: Besides being this for the Qin military as a whole, the Fei Xin receives elite transfers from other armies that like and respect his way of fighting.

* NonindicativeName: They are classified as an 5000-man unit... that is 8000 soldiers strong. Long Guo even lampshades it. This is mainly due to Qiang Lei's refusal to leave them even after being promoted to 3000-man commander. High command leaves them be because of how effective they are. The same dynamic persists when Xin is made General and Qiang Lei 5000-Man Commander.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: A majority of the early fighters that started the Fei Xin Unit with Xin were basically a bunch of nobodies. Down the line, the unit gains more powerful recruits that have barely any similarity to one another; making the army a huge mixture of awesomeness. The unit is also the only one shown actively recruiting from the peasantry. It is truly remarkable that a group of untrained commoners like them managed to stand shoulder to shoulder to the children of some of the realm's oldest military families, and, in many cases, outdo them - and not that long after they were formed.
* SpeedSmartsAndStrength: The three main leaders of the unit, Qiang Lei, He Liao Diao, and Xin, mainly fall in line with each trait respectively in battle, though Qiang Lei and Xin possess the other's virtues as well.
* TrueCompanions: The Fei Xin Unit is all friendly with one another, and will fight to the death for each other, and their commander, Xin, as if they were family. Their cohesion and loyalty to one another is arguably their greatest strength.

* AbandonedWarChild: Lost his parents during one of China's constant wars along with Piao. He went from being a [[AbandonedWarChild war orphan]] to a [[MadeASlave virtual slave]] when having to serve the Mayor of Chenghu/Jyouto Village.
* AccidentalKiss: Xin ends up falling on Diao, and they lock lips, much to Duke Biao's amusement.

* AlmightyJanitor: Despite being a 5000-man commander, Lord Changping states his accomplishments and abilities exceeded that of most generals. In fact, Xin's fighting abilities were on a general's level even back when he was a mere foot soldier. This can be seen as a JustifiedTrope as Xin's lack of strategic ability and youth are strong reasons against promoting him further.
* ArchEnemy: An interesting case where he has two.
** Pang Nuan: For his murders of Wang Yi, his comrades and soldiers, and Duke Biao, Xin came to truly hate him on a personal level. * AsskickingEqualsAuthority: One of the most prominent examples in a series filled with the trope, Xin has gotten promotions based on his martial prowess and the sheer number of generals and commanders slain by his own hands.
* BadassNormal: He lacks professional and formal training in either combat or warfare, but is still remarkably deadly on the battlefield, having claimed the heads of many powerful opponents. His skill at arms is the primary motivation for most of his promotions.
* BerserkButton: Xin can fly off the handle because of multiple things.
** Do not kill civilians needlessly in front of him, he doesn't care if you're an enemy or an allied commander with a higher position on his own side, he will cut you down without mercy. Deconstructed in the Heiyang arc; despite having had his button pressed by the Huan Yi Army until he snapped, there was nothing he could do then, and his fury only damaged his position: [[spoiler:Xin's confrontation with Huan Yi ended up costing him his promotion]].
** Pang Nuan is one for him. The Wushen earned Xin's ire because of his murder of Wang Yi, Duke Biao, and several of his own men, [[spoiler: Qu Hai included. Sending Qiang Lei flying after defeating her and severely hurting her didn't help either.]]
** Played for laughs with Wang Ben. Anytime Wang Ben does something great in battle or reaches a personal milestone, Xin will get angry or extremely annoyed. * ChasteHero: PlayedWith. He gets flustered when the topic of romance is brought up but wouldn't mind [[UnusualEuphemism "climbing the mountain"]] with Qiang Lei if she offers. There is more than a little ShipTease between them to confirm this.
* {{Determinator}}: The greatest example of the manga. He's greatly determined to one day become a Great General of Qin and will go to any length to kill any noteworthy enemy to reach it. His tenacity is capable of bringing even the likes of Pang Nuan into a standstill. The greatest example of this is the Siege of Zui: Xin held the southern wall, the worst battlefield in the city, ''to the very end''. Odds, numbers, provisions, as long as Xin is concerned, all this be damned - if he has to do something, ''he will do it''. Xin is as stubborn as a mule.
* FourStarBadass: Wants to become one, but compared to his superiors, he has a long way to go. The story revolves around his journey to achieve this.
* FreudianTrio: With Meng Tian and Wang Ben. Being a HotBlooded IdiotHero firmly cements him as the Id.
* GutFeeling: Xin is developing into an "instinctual" type, who can instantly read the ebb and flow of battle without formal tactics and structural thinking. Greatly showcased during the Battle of Zhuhai Plains, when he takes over with "tactics" similar to those Duke Biao used to great effect (at least for a while).
* HeroesPreferSwords: Subverted; he started out with swords, but eventually took up glaives, after he inherited [[spoiler:Wang Yi's glaive]], though he still keeps Piao's sword with him as a sidearm.
* HeroicSecondWind: Has a near-endless supply of this and can even share it with others. Any time he is beaten to exhaustion he finds strength to get back stronger than before.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: He's based on a well-known Qin General of the warring states era.
* HotBlooded: Tends to yell and argue with others. Has drawn his blade towards superiors more than once.
* IdiotHero: Was called his home village's number two/one idiot during his time as a servant to the landowner. Even after maturity and considerable war experience, Xin's strategic abilities are lacking to the point the unit was on the verge of collapse before He Liao Diao joined as the [[TheSmartGuy team strategist]]. Justified as he never received the military education that helped the likes of Wang Ben and Meng Tian (or even Diao, for the matter); and even if he had, it probably wouldn't be put to use much, as he's an instinctual general rather than a strategic one.
** It takes him a year, 29 volumes, before his charisma/leadership capability finally surpasses his old friend. His intelligence is still below par by standards of the series.
* TheLeader: Of the entire Fei Xin Unit as a 5,000-man army commander [[spoiler:(and then as a General)]]. Can be seen as this in his FreudianTrio combination with Wang Ben and Meng Tian, ''at times''.
* LeeroyJenkins: DeconstructedTrope. After Qiang Lei leaves the unit, his gung-ho battle behavior leads to a series of defeats. He was on the verge of getting demoted if not for Meng Tian's intervention and [[spoiler:Diao]] becoming his strategist.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Zheng, of all people. A couple of important characters realize how important Xin is to Zheng. It's Chengjiao who put it best.

* TookALevelInBadass: Just about every battle has him taking at least one. It's one of the key aspects of the series.
* TragicKeepsake: Piao's sword, [[spoiler:Wang Yi's glaive, Lun Hu's sword, and Duke Biao's shield]]. Xin has a knack for collecting these.
* UnskilledButStrong: What he lacks for in raw technique compared to Meng Tian and Wang Ben he makes up for in brute strength. This applies to his warfare as well - Xin's lack of tactical understanding means his unit relies on his sheer destructive ability more than his rivals [[spoiler: until he begins using his instincts to substitute strategy in Ye]]. And boy, is it effective.
* UnwittingPawn: Lord Changping has dubbed him the most valuable piece to obtain. Xin doesn't know his value but he is more focused on becoming a general. [[spoiler: Fortunately, Lord Changping defects to Zheng's faction before he can make use of either him or Diao.]]
** He becomes this for Huan Yi in Heiyang, who intentionally leaves him in an irresistibly vulnerable position to lure Qing She from his unbreakable web.
* UpThroughTheRanks: Starts off as a lowly soldier, but after his first campaign is instantly promoted to 100-Man Commander due to his actions significantly influencing the battle as a whole.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Wang Ben. Subverted at first, with how hostile Wang Ben was to him. Played straight later on, they still love to hate each other, but when they work together, they're unstoppable.

The heir of the legendary Chiyou (Shiyuu in Japanese) assassin clan. With her special sword named Lu Sui (Ryoku Sui in Japanese), Qiang Lei is out to get revenge on the assassin from said clan who killed her sister, Xiang. Her special ability allows her to harbor a 'war god' by doing a 'priestess dance' that draws the war god's power into her. Further down the line, she decides to help Xin and the Fei Xin Unit by becoming a Great General herself, and serves as one of the unit's lieutenants. She's currently the commander of her own 3,000-man army that fights with the Fei Xin Unit for a grand total of 8,000 soldiers.

* AlmightyJanitor: She's actually stronger than Xin and has superior strategic abilities. In fact, going by stats she is currently the strongest combatant in Qin besides Meng Wu, and that is without counting her Alpha stat.
** Her general abilities are no less than Xin's, Wang Ben's, and Meng Tian's, but she chooses to remain Xin's subordinate despite stating her intention to become a great general as well, in a similar relationship Teng had with Wang Yi (complete with possible romantic subtext).

** DangerousForbiddenTechnique: She goes beyond the limit of her Priestess Dance to defeat Yuu Ren in an attempt to pull this, but memories of the Fei Xin Unit pull her back.

* TheLancer: Is essentially Xin's NumberTwo.
* TheLeader: As a 3,000-man [[spoiler:and later 5000-man]] army commander that fights alongside the Fei Xin Unit.
* LittleMissBadass: Despite being one of the shorter fighters, she's still one of the greatest fighters in the story.
* MissConception: She thinks that climbing a mountain with a strong guy will cause something to explode, resulting in a baby.
* OneWomanArmy: Similar to Pang Nuan, she has achieved a level of martial skill where she can match an army single handed, something which Lord Changping considers defies the concept of an army itself. * VerbalTic: Has a tendency to end her sentences with "probably", or "I think" despite being completely right on the mark every time.
* WeaksauceWeakness: She has an extremely short stamina and when that runs out, she is all but taken out of the current fight until she's finished what amounts to ''napping''.

He Liao Diao is the last descendant of a mountain tribe who chanced upon Xin and Zheng as they were fleeing from Chengjiao's forces. After they defeat the coup, He Liao Diao lives with Xin before enlisting into Lord Changping's strategist academy and eventually becoming the Fei Xin Unit's strategist.

With her special sword named "Ryokusui" (Chinese: Lu Seui), Kyo Kai is out to get revenge on the assassin from said clan who killed her sister, "Xiang." Her special ability allows her to harbor a 'war god' by doing a 'priestess dance' that draws the war god's power into her. Further down the line, she decides to help Shin and the Hi Shin Unit by becoming a Great General herself, and serves as one of the unit's lieutenants. She's currently the commander of her own 3,000-man army that fights with the Hi Shin Unit for a grand total of 8,000 soldiers.

* AlmightyJanitor: She's actually stronger than Shin and has superior strategic abilities. In fact, going by stats she is currently the strongest combatant in Qin besides Mou Bu, and that is without counting her Alpha stat.

* ADayInTheLimelight: He had to lead the Hi Shin Unit across a dangerous river during the Kokuyou Campaign arc.

* TheReliableOne: It is because of this he is chosen to lead the Hi Shin unit across a dangerous river despite his lack of outstanding qualities. More specifically, Ten and Shin site that his greatest trait is his "sense of responsibility", since he's been with the Hi Shin unit for so long, and has served directly under Shin himself the longest out of anyone in the unit, he'd put in the most effort out of anyone in a situation where everyone else, Shin especially, is counting on him to deliver.

* TookALevelInBadass: Starts off as a normal soldier that was tasked to simply look after Shin, but then becomes one of the primary lieutenants within the Hi Shin Unit after he supports Shin in [[TrainingFromHell subjugating the lawless region]].

Den Yuu becomes part of the newly created Hi Shin Unit with several other massive soldiers where they become known as the Monster Squad through multiple battles. Continuing to work his way up as the leader of the Monster Squad, Den Yuu eventually becomes one of the Hi Shin Unit's top fighters as a 1000-man commander.

* TheBigGuy: As part of the Monster Trio for the Hi Shin Unit. Den Yuu serves at the trio's leader.

* TheLancer: Den Yuu is basically Shin's #2 when Kyo Kai's not around.
* TheLeader: Of the Monster Group which becomes the Monster Trio after the death of their 4th member. After becoming a Squad Leader, Den Yuu eventually becomes a 1000-man army commander for the Hi Shin Unit.

Following the demise of their leader during the Coalition Invasion arc, Gaku Rai and many other Hyou Army soldiers decide to follow under the banner of the Hi Shin Unit after fighting alongside Shin and his army. Gaku Rai's branch within the unit are known as the Hi Hyou Troops.

* GreenEyedMonster: Gaku Rai admits to Shin that he and many of the Duke Hyou soldiers were jealous of how much Hyou seemed to talk about and focus his attention on Shin. However, they accepted it when the soldiers realized that Shin's entire existence seemed to be the one thing that brought out Duke Hyou's happiness.

* TheLeader: Served as a 1000-man commander for Duke Hyou's Army. He then becomes the leader of the Hi Hyou Troops that joined the Hi Shin Unit after the death of Duke Hyou.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Doesn't act out when around the Hi Shin Unit given that he's come to respect them, and even asks for the men on guard duty to get their share of food just like what he's getting while resting at the unit's camp.

Na Ki was part of a switch-up between two armies during the Kokuyou Campaign where he's sent over to the Hi Shin Unit while Bi Hei moved with the Kan Ki Army so that both sides can get a better understanding of one another. Na Ki however, ends up enjoying the time he spent with the Hi Shin Unit, and results in him asking Kan Ki for a transfer, which Kan Ki accepts.

* CreepyGood: Is one of the more terrifying members of the Hi Shin Unit due to his background in the Kan Ki Army, and is feared enough that other members of said force refuse to bother him.

* HyperAwareness: Pays close attention to the things going on around him. Watching how the Hi Shin Unit works is what eventually brings him to wanting a transfer off the Kan Ki Army.
* TheLeader: Of a 1000-man army within the Kan Ki Army, and then the Hi Shin Unit.
* UndyingLoyalty: Proves himself to have switched his loyalty over to the Hi Shin Unit after he kills off the Kan Ki Army's Gan Jin to protect Bi Hei.

* CommanderContrarian: Acts as the most pessimistic member of the army, question Shin at multiple occasions such as when [[spoiler: Ka Ryo Ten is kidnapped.]] He means well, however, and will follow Shin's orders despite his disagreements.
* TheCynic: When the other soldiers celebrate the idea of Shin being promoted, he quickly reminds them that as a slave he may still be left hanging like many others in the past, though his theory never held any water due to Shin's friendship with Sei.
* EliteMook: He's basically a named soldier in Gaku Rai's Hi Hyou Troops. One could make an argument that he's Gaku Rai's NumberTwo.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Frequently challenges Shin's orders and is dismissive of En's abilities, but only for the good of the greater unit.

* AngerBornOfWorry: While the rest of the unit is just straight up relieved that Shin [[spoiler: came back from the dead]], Den Ei is also ''furious'' and has to be held back as he yells that he's gonna kick Shin's ass while crying his eyes out.

* HeManWomanHater: Didn't like the thought of Ten, a woman, joining the unit to be their strategist.

* TheLeader: Starts off as a Squad Leader. He leads a group of massive soldiers known as the Heavy Weight Squad within the Hi Shin Unit. He eventually becomes one for a 100-man army.
* TookALevelInBadass: Ryuu Sen starts off as a Squad Leader in the Hi Shin Unit. He becomes the leader of the unit's Heavy Weight Squad, and eventually becomes a 100-man army commander.

He's currently worked his way up to being the Hi Shin Unit's primary commander over the infantry.

* EmbarrassingNickname: [[spoiler:Pants-pisser]] Suugen, for his actions in his first battle.
* EyepatchOfPower: Sports an eye-patch later in the series after losing his left eye during the Battle of Bayou. However, it doesn't stop him from being a total badass on his own.

* MasterSwordsman: Deemed the best swordsman in the entire unit and his personal squad are almost equally good. The Battle of Bayou shows him off cutting up many of Zhao's soldiers by himself.
* PerpetualSmiler: So confident in mastering the art of the sword that Suu Gen is seen giving off a creepy looking smile whenever he's in battle as if everything is too easy for him. He tones down on the smiling a bit after losing his eye.
* TookALevelInBadass: Suu Gen starts off as a Squad Leader in the Hi Shin Unit to eventually becoming a 100-man army commander. He's also acquired the role as the leader of the Hi Shin Unit's infantry.
