* BoomerangBigot: [[spoiler:He had a time of wanting to kill all Orphnochs despite being one himself. This can be justified, every Orphnoch he met was either killing everyone around him, or was in their human form the entire time. Not to mention the fact that he hated his Orphnoch transformation due to misunderstandings.]]
* BreakoutCharacter: Of the early Heisei Rider's Takumi is by far one of the most prominant and would make several complete returns (meaning not just suit or voice only but Kento Handa returning in a major capacity) down the line playing a major role in Kamen Rider Taisen, a big supporting role in Super Hero Taisen GP and being the DecoyProtagonist of Kamen Rider 4 despite it being a special based off Kamen Rider Drive. He also goes on to appear in Zi-O and is the first Heisei Phase 1 Rider to have an anniversary special. He also consistantly ranks in the top 5 Riders of any era on official polls.

A member of the Ryusei School entrusted with the Faiz Gear by her foster father, which she gives to Takumi after finding she is unable to use it herself.

* RebelLeader: In the movie she's one of the leaders of the human resistance to the Orphnochs, who have succeeded in wiping out most of humanity.

* TookALevelInBadass: In the movie [[spoiler:where he gets a chance to transform into Kaixa and defeat an Orphnoch]].

* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: The first major example in the franchise. While [[Series/KamenRiderKuuga Yusuke]], [[Series/KamenRiderAgito Shoichi]] and [[Series/KamenRiderRyuki Shinji]] are all traditionally heroic types, Takumi is an abrasive IneffectualLoner and JerkWithAHeartOfGold [[spoiler:who even briefly turns to the dark side at one point.]]

* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the usual secondary Rider tropes. Unlike his predecessors, and successors, who are either straight-up heroes like the main riders or started off as anti-heroes who later TookALevelInKindness via CharacterDevelopment, Kusaka is voided of these traits and instead he's a straight up villain, or NominalHero at best, from the start till the end.

* EvilHero: His duty as a Rider is to protect humans from Orphnochs, but Kusaka is ruthless to anyone he dislikes, especially an Orphnoch. However, he does show some concern towards innocent civilians, and felt grief upon [spoiler:watching Hanaga succumb to his condition as an Orphnoch.]]

** Played straight in Kamen Rider Taisen, where [[spoiler:due to not being able to save Kusaka and his friends, he wonders if he deserves to live.]]

* TheHero: Takumi is the primary user of Kamen Rider Faiz, although he sometimes gets overshadowed due to the vast majority of characters and his initial boredom until he got serious about becoming a Kamen Rider.

* JackOfAllStats: Faiz Form. Also this among the three Rider Gears, as the Faiz gear is the least powerful, but has multiple functions plus [[spoiler:is the least likely to kill you off quickly.]]

* DudeMagnet: She has three people after her. Kusaka and Sawada have loved her since childhood. While Kaido gets a crush on her as well. [[spoiler:Based on extent that Takumi is willing to go for her, he probably likes her as well.]]
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: [[spoiler:It actually cost her life once.]]

* DiedInYourArmsTonight: Kusaka in the retconned version of his death in ''Film/HeiseiRiderVsShowaRiderKamenRiderWarsFeaturingSuperSentai'' on Takumi's arms, asking him why he has to die [[MoralMyopia when someone like Takumi with nothing to protect lives on.]]
* EvilHero: His duty as a Rider is to protect humans from Orphnochs, but Kusaka isn't a hero or even AntiHero, but is closer to a villain who just happens to be fighting the threat the heroes are also fighting. Compared to the heroes, takes it WAY further than they do, out of simple hatred, being a lustful sociopath who classifies every Orphnoch he sees, and anybody who gets in his way to a lesser extent, as so evil they only deserve the worst.
* EvilVersusEvil: His backstabbing, scheming tendencies causing SO MANY problems. People are somehow unable to see how much of an ass he is despite this. Because his hatred is against the Orphnoch, he's an EvilHero by virtue of being against the antagonists and monsters, with an emphasis on evil shown when he [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman refuses to see the human side of Orphnochs even when some are genuinely good people]], including [[spoiler:Takumi himself]]. Even after [[spoiler:he's killed before the last few episodes]], it's pretty clear that [[spoiler:the heroes are now mostly dealing with the fallout of his constant sabotage of their efforts to unite, most notably Kiba's turn to the dark side, which makes his death by hands of the man he more or less psychologically tortured EXTREMELY karmic.]]
* FantasticRacism: He does not respect, care, or treat Orphnoch as normal human beings. While most of them were either a MonsterOfTheWeek, he sees the ones that aren't violent and even his own peers and potential allies as lesser beings that deserve to be murdered.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Kusaka looks like a decent guy on the surface when he's anything but. He doesn't hesitate to drop the act if you come between him and Mari, as Takumi learned firsthand. He wants all Orphnochs eliminated merely out of bigotry than principle, and even looks down on both Takumi and Kiba for being Orphnochs.

* FreudianExcuse: The closest thing he has to a reason for the way he is involves being bullied as a child, Mari standing up for him, and the fact that the Orphnochs did attack him first and killed some of his classmates.

* HateSink: He is a generally unlikeable person and a complete asshole who manipulates others into thinking he's a charming AntiHero, betrays allies for his own greed and lust, and even pisses off some of the villains. Even in his final moments, Kusaka is arrogant and sociopathic with almost no redeeming qualities as his death was much deserved.
* TheHeavy: One of the reasons the conflict takes so long to resolve is because of Kusaka doing everything in his power to worsen relations between humans and Orphnochs.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Proclaims that Orphnochs are inherently inhuman inside and out, yet is arguably the worst monster in the show. Even Smart Brain's Orphnochs, however twisted, are driven by a sense of survival for their kind.
* HumansAreTheRealMonsters: Arguably the best example in the franchise, particularly among the ones who are called "Kamen Rider". Orphnoch DNA allowing him to use the Gears aside, he's fully human, yet outdoes Smart Brain in sheer inhumanity and callousness. They commit their cruelties in the name of their kind's survival. He commits his out of self-entitlement, pettiness, and spite.
* ItsAllAboutMe: ''THE'' defining aspect of his character. He will stop at nothing until he himself lords over everyone else, even if they are fellow humans.
* JerkassHasAPoint: [[spoiler:In ''[[Film/HeiseiRiderVsShowaRiderKamenRiderWarsFeaturingSuperSentai Kamen Rider Taisen]]'', mentioned the following quote to Takumi in his retconned death scene:]]

** This trope is at least played with when you study Kusaka's character and history. He only thinks Takumi is hollow and has nothing to protect, because he's incapable of thinking Takumi as anything but scum, [[spoiler:even if the latter wasn't an Orphnoch]], and sees everyone else as a tool to help him succeed, save for Mari (and even then, he seems to treat her as more of a possession than as a person). Then, you consider everything about him, namely his character, his sense of self-entitlement, his sheer sociopathy, and everything he's done, then it's plain to see that [[spoiler:[[AssholeVictim he pretty much deserved to die horribly]], no matter what canon]]. That said, it also doesn't stop Takumi from feeling the least bit upset about him, and in this case seems to think Kusaka was actually right for once to call him out on this because of the HiddenHeartOfGold-hiding facade he used to isolate others, making him appear hollow to everyone.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: While his predecessors and many successors in the ''Secondary Rider'' line are more of JerkWithAHeartOfGold, he's so far the first of said category to be a full blown {{Jerkass}}. Although his so-called allies thought he changed his ways after Takumi's redemption, Kusaka remains a self-centered jerkass to the very end, with any seeming PetTheDog moments he has only being out of pragmatism and little else. It wouldn't be until [[Series/KamenRiderGaim Mitsuzane Kureshima]] that we'd get another like him (the latter is more of a ''Tertiary Rider''). Curiously, Mitsuzane shared many traits with him.
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: No matter the continuity, he never completely gets away with what he does. Sooner or later, his luck finally runs out. Even in Series/KamenRiderZiO, where he apparently isn't as bad as usual, [[spoiler:he comes dangerously close to getting his neck snapped again.]]
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:Throughout most of the show, he'd been sabotaging the potential friendship of Takumi and Kiba, and subsequently, any chance of a united front against Smart Brain, just for his own ends, also torturing both about their supposed [[{{Hypocrite}} inherent inhumanity]]. He's murdered by Kiba, who had finally snapped at this point and joined Smart Brain, all of which is largely his fault. And Kiba does the deed with Kusaka's own Kaixa Gear, which Kiba had recently taken from him. Moreover, he dies alone, the others nearby looking for him, missing him by a few meters, and him unable to get their attention as he fades away like the wretch he was in life.]]

* LoveMakesYouCrazy: His unhinged obsession towards Mari is the main reason why he wants to get rid of everyone who is close to her.

* NeckSnap: [[spoiler:He gets dealt this in his in-series death before being left to die the pathetic death he at that point ''greatly deserved.'']]
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: [[spoiler:Sees Takumi mainly as this.]]

* {{Retcon}}: [[spoiler:His death in ''Film/HeiseiRiderVsShowaRiderKamenRiderWarsFeaturingSuperSentai'' is shown to have happened when Takumi was present.]]

* SmugSnake: Firmly convinced of his own superiority over the people around him, particularly Takumi.
* TheSociopath: A high-functioning example. Kusaka lacks empathy for others, but is incredibly skilled at charming others and keeping his true nature under wraps, while keeping the ones who do know of his sociopathy isolated. He has an attachment to Mari, but it doesn't go anywhere beyond a simple lust and desire to keep her all to himself, and he's even willing to dispense with her when it's not pragmatically viable. He also revels at the chance to fight and kill Orphnochs to satiate his bloodlust for them.
* TheSpock: He's a cold and sociopathic pragmatist.

* TokenEvilTeammate: He might be fighting against the Orphnoch, but he's such a sociopath that he's little better personality-wise than most of the villains. The one thing that keeps him from being as bad as them is that he (mostly) focuses on only fighting antagonistic Orphnochs, [[PragmaticVillainy if only because attacking innocent ones would reveal his true colors to Mari]].
* TheUnfettered: His only two goals are to protect and be with Mari and to stop the Orphnoch and Smart Brain. He'll only consider giving one of these up if he sees them as having become mutually exclusive, such as [[spoiler:when he has to choose between giving the belts to Smart Brain or not reviving Mari; he chooses the latter since he has no guarantee Smart Brain will keep their word.]]

* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler:After abandoning his ideals and performing a FaceHeelTurn, Kiba comes back around and sacrifices himself by holding down the Arch Orphonoch in the FinalBattle so Faiz can land the deciding Rider Kick, killing both Yuji and the Arch Orphonoch.]]

* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler:He is the last person alive of his own series following the conclusion of ''Kamen Rider Yongou''. Kaido, however, wonders if Takumi is still walking on the face of Earth.]]

* LightningBruiser: Axel Form increases Faiz's power, speed, and defense for it's 10 seconds available while allowing Faiz to move at the speed of sound. The form can easily overpower high speed Orphnoch, with the power to destroy several at once, and can tank damage from almost an Orphnoch except Dragon. The drawback like most forms that fit this mold is that it has a 10-second time limit.

* PowerFist: The SB-555C Faiz Shot was designed for specific compatility with the Faiz Mission Memory, transforming into an enerhy powered kunckle-duster Faiz can use for his Grand Impact Rider Punch attack. With Axel Form, he can use his enhanced speed to punch multiple enemies while running through them.
* ProtagonistPowerUpPrivileges: [[spoiler:The reason he got Axel form was Kusaka gave him the device, for some reason. He only activated Blaster Form as he was mailed the Faiz Blaster.]]

* SuperSpeed: Axel Form gives him the speed of sound, but for only 10 seconds.

* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:Twice, once when he is rescued by Yuka. After he finds out that she is an Orphnoch, and questions if other Orphnoch aren't complete monsters, making him unable to fight. He gets over it, as he realizes that he should only attack those attacking humans. The second time is when he couldn't protect Mari from Sawada, causing her death. This is only further when he is forced to transform in front of his friends and have them be scared of him for a few episodes.
