!!D-Pilots

[[folder:Hisone Amakasu − Hisone]]
!!!Voiced by Creator/MisakiKuno (Japanese), Creator/ChristineMarieCabanos (English), Amanda Hinojosa (Latin American Spanish), Clara Schwarze (European Spanish)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amakasu_hisone.PNG]]

A third class employee in the Japanese Air Defense Force, she has trouble adjusting her brain-to-mouth filter. She ends up becoming a "D-Pilot" for Masotan before she even understands what's happening to her.
----
* BrutalHonesty: Readily admits to this being her biggest flaw. She chose her career with the JASDF because she knew she'd have less opportunities to interact with other people and hurt them with her words.
* ButtMonkey: Always getting the short end of the stick.
* CoveredInGunge: The only one of the D-Pilots that still suffers from this when exiting her dragon.
* FallingIntoTheCockpit: Masotan chooses her to pilot him before she could even process what's going on. Of course, RealityEnsues as she [[SubvertedTrope has no clue what she's doing.]]
* FriendlessBackground: She mentions more than once that she's never had real friends before becoming a D-Pilot, likely due to having NoSocialSkills.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:She volunteers to stay behind and complete the Ritual...luckily Masotan ensures that she survives]].
* InadequateInheritor: Doesn't feel fit to be Masotan's pilot, but she's got no say in the matter.
* LecherousLicking: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed.]] She has a habit of licking Masotan, not in a perverted way but to show affection.
* LoveEpiphany: She eventually realizes she is in love with [[RidiculouslyAverageGuy Okonogi]]… which causes her to run around the base while delivering the most glass-shattering shriek in anime history.
* TheNicknamer: She decides to give Mayumi and Liliko nicknames so that they get closer during the survival test, calling them "Hitomin" and "Lilikos" respectively. She also tries to nickname her dragon "Otofu" before discovering his real name.
* NoSocialSkills: Her BrutalHonesty seems to stem from this, since she often unintentionally insults people by saying things she ''really'' shouldn't.
* TenMinuteRetirement: In episode 11, [[spoiler:after she has fallen in love with Okonogi and can no longer pilot Masotan, she decides to quit the JSDF altogether, but ends up finding a way to counter the "anastomosis" (the OTF's violent physical rejection of girls in love) and get back in time for the Ritual.]]

[[folder:Nao Kaizaki − Sexy Jaguar]]
!!!Voiced by Creator/TomoyoKurosawa (Japanese), Creator/SarahWilliams (English), Fernanda Ornelas (Latin American Spanish), Creator/CarmenAmbros (European Spanish)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaizaki_nao.PNG]]

Third class like Hisone, she's much more abrasive and not very fond of the demure Hisone, although her attempts to bully her inevitably backfire. She soon becomes Masotan's backup pilot.
----
* AttackBackfire: Her initial attempts to bully Hisone end up ''encouraging her instead'', much to Nao's frustration.
* ButtMonkey: Between never actually getting to pilot Masotan before Hisone showed up and took over, and her comedically-unrequited crush on Ikushima, she never gets much farther than "endearing ComicRelief character." Deconstructed early on, though, when she tries to sabotage Hisone's flight suits out of jealousy, and runs away from the base because she feels useless and unwanted.
* DontYouDarePityMe: Hisone's attempts to help Nao only anger even more.
* GreenEyedMonster: Hates Hisone's guts, since she was the most prospective D-pilot until Hisone came around. She does eventually let go, but still picks on her anyway.
* OutOfFocus: The first couple of episodes sets up Nao as something of a foil to Hisone, being jealous over the fact that Hisone usurped her as the D-Pilot for Masotan. As a side effect of the fact that she's the ''back-up'' pilot, Nao ultimately ends up taking on a more supporting role after the other D-Pilots, particularly [[{{Deuteragonist}} Hoshino]], are introduced.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She acts more like a thuggish boy than a girl most of the time, but she's also shown to enjoy reading shoujo manga and typically wears her hair in GirlishPigtails when it isn't in her default hairstyle.
* TookALevelInKindness: She does end up warming up to the others, especially Hisone.
* {{Tsundere}}: Harsh and hostile to just about everyone, but Ikushima, whom she's head-over-heels for.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mayumi Hitomi − Morris]]
!!!Voiced by Creator/KaoriNazuka (Japanese), Creator/XantheHuynh (English), Vanessa Olea (Latin American Spanish)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hitomi_mayumi.PNG]]

The big and friendly D-Pilot of Futomomo.
----
* BewareTheNiceOnes: It's easy to take her for an air-headed ditz who only sees her OTF as a pet. But she's still an experienced D-Pilot, even in training, and she puts a lot of effort to withhold her temper should she ever get angry since she's aware that "big girls" like her can be scary when they're mad.
* BerserkButton: ''Don't treat your [=OTFs=] and look down on them like they're just vehicles.''
* BigBeautifulWoman: Though pudgy, she's quite adorable and fluffy. It's later revealed that she's quite popular among the male pilots at the airbase, and one in particular is shown to have a very obvious crush on her.
* BigFun: She's the friendliest of the three joint-training D-Pilots and just wants everyone to get along like gals.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: The [[AllThereInTheManual official website]] states that Hitomi previously worked at a zoo, and she befriended every animal living there. She was recruited as a D-Pilot candidate specifically because of this trait.
* HugeSchoolgirl: She's not a schoolgirl anymore, but she's the tallest of the five main girls and it's implied that she puts a lot of effort into controlling her anger since she's well aware that tall girls can be scary when mad.
* TranquilFury: Hitomi's anger slips out by her breaking or crushing things in her hands, such as when Hoshino's accusing the other D-Pilots of being inadequate or blaming F2 for losing control.
-->'''Hitomi''': ''Dragons aren't "things".''

[[folder:Liliko Kinutsugai − Jimmy]]
!!!Voiced by Creator/SatomiArai (Japanese), Creator/ErikaHarlacher (English), Andrea Soto (Latin American Spanish)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kinutsugai_liliko.PNG]]

The small and reclusive pilot of Akemi.
----
* AmbiguousDisorder: She has scopophobia, speaks in a robotic observational tone, yet has great precision in calculating numbers in her head.
* FlatJoy: Demonstrates this in episode 6, when the group catch a fish during the survival training. Her tone of voice ''slightly'' changes but her expression doesn't.
* OtakuSurrogate: Obsessed with the manga series ''Manga/{{Kingdom}}''. Iiboshi exploits this to bribe/blackmail her into giving him information about the other pilots' likes/dislikes and potential love interests.
* NotGoodWithPeople: Kinutsugai and Akemi are quite comfortable with each other, as Kinutsugai can fly him in a simple sitting position instead of the standard on-fours without disturbing him. However, she doesn't seem to like being around others for too long.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Speaks in convoluted technical terms to describe the simplest things, part of her AmbiguousDisorder.
* ShrinkingViolet: She has a fear of being looked at.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: [[JapaneseRanguage Liliko or Ririko?]]
* TheStoic: Always has a flat-gaze and speaks with a monotone.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:El Hoshino − Penguin]]
!!!Voiced by Creator/MakiKawase (Japanese), Katelyn Gault (English), Valentina Souza (Latin American Spanish), Carmen Calvell (European Spanish)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hoshino_eru.PNG]]

The harsh and severe D-Pilot of F2.
----
* DefrostingIceQueen: Her warming up to "Norma" and accepting that he's ''not'' a machine is the key to get the group off the island in episode 6.
* FluffyTheTerrible: Her callsign, "Penguin", may seem cute, but she's also the pilot of the fiercest-looking OTF by far.
* HeroicRROD: Her overworking F2 causes her to lose control over him and making go berserk.
* HeyYou: Calling her OTF by the name of his plane model instead of a nickname is a way for her to not get attached and not treat him like a living being. She finally calls him by an actual name when she accepts him in episode 6.
* ImNotHereToMakeFriends: She states that she has no interest in making friends at Gifu, being entirely focused on becoming the first female fighter pilot, though she does soften up a little later on.
* IronLady: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. Hoshino's insatiable drive to become the first female fighter pilot not only alienates her from the other D-Pilots, but also put undue stress on F2 that leads to him going berserk.
* LackOfEmpathy: She only sees the [=OTFs=] as mere machines, and refuses to see the point in bonding with them like the other D-Pilots, though it turns out that this is because she sees being a D-Pilot as getting in the way of her dream to fly a "real" F-2 jet.
* MeaningfulName: Her callsign refers to how penguins follow the first of their flock to jump into the ocean. This reflects how her goal is to be the first woman to pilot an F-2 jet.
* NotSoDifferent: Her logic for naming her dragon Norma is similar to the logic Hisone used to initially name Masotan "Otofu".
* {{Tsundere}}:
** She's embarrassed about how Hisone correctly guessed that she was calling her dragon "Norma" instead of "F2" in her mind the whole time, even before she visibly warmed up to him.
** Hoshino also dances around her growing infatuation with the cocky fighter pilot Zaito.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Moriyama − Forest]]
!!!Voiced by Creator/ChiwaSaitou (Japanese), Creator/AllegraClark (English)
The previous pilot of Masotan who suddenly retired years ago for no given reason.
----
* BabiesEverAfter: The apparent reason why she retired was because she was pregnant.
* IWasQuiteALooker: According to the other Gifu pilots, at least; they're visibly shocked when she returns to the base sans her former hourglass figure.
* MeaningfulName: Her callsign, "Forest", is in reference to the "Mori" portion of her last name, which is Japanese for forest.
* RefusedByTheCall: The real reason why Moriyama retired; Masotan suddenly stopped taking her as his pilot, [[spoiler:in response to her falling in love with another man]].

[[folder:[=F-15J=] − Masotan]]
!!!Voiced by: Matsunojō Kanda (Japanese), David Fernandez (Latin American Spanish)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f_15j_masotan.PNG]]

An "Organic Transformed Flyer" that resides in the Gifu airbase and swallows Hisone as soon as he sees her. Takes the form of an [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_F-15J F-15J]] when transformed.
----

* BlackEyesOfCrazy: He displays black sclerae with white irises whenever he consumes or regurgitates his pilots.
* CatLikeDragons: Exhibits some traditionally cat-like mannerisms.
* IHaveManyNames: He's been called "Montparnasse" by Sada, "Oscar" by Moriyama, and was even going to be called "Otofu" by Hisone, before she found a strange plate marked "Masotan" inside his stomach; according to the higher-ups, Masotan is his true name.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Despite being introduced as a man-eating shadowy horror, Masotan is actually quite adorable and even has some cat-like quirks (such as grooming himself with his tongue).
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Flip phones, which contain rare metals that dragons like. The division briefly assumes this is why Masotan swallowed Hisone, since she still owned a flip phone rather than a more modern smartphone.
* UndyingLoyalty: [[spoiler:He stays behind with Hisone when she volunteers to complete the Ritual, and is responsible for her survival]].

[[folder:[=C-1=] − Futomomo]]

[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c1_futomomo.PNG]]

Mayumi Hitomi's OTF. Takes the form of a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_C-1 Kawasaki C-1 cargo plane]] when transformed. Futumomo and Mayumi are based at Iruma AB.
----
* BigEater: During survival training, he ends up eating the entire 3-day supply of rare metals, as well as all the girls' rations.
* GiantFlyer: Futomomo takes the form of a cargo plane, and is absolutely massive in his untransformed state.
* GentleGiant: Big as he is, he seems to have a feather touch, as he's able to spit-up Hitomi upward without hurting her. Plus the big smile he has is quite adorable.
* PerpetualSmiler: Always has a sharp-toothed smile on his face. Bonus on being a humorous take on the iconic "Shark Face NoseArt".

Liliko Kinutsugai's OTF. Takes the form of an [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman_E-2_Hawkeye E-2C Hawkeye]] when transformed. They are usually based at Misawa AB.
----
* AbnormalLimbRotationRange: His wing fingers convert into his plane's propellers.
* EyepatchOfPower: Has one for some reason.
* NiceHat: The E-2C's radar disc acts as one for him.

El Hoshino's OTF. Takes the form of an [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_F-2 F-2 fighter jet]] when transformed. Normally based at Tsuiki AB.
----
* FragileSpeedster: The smallest of the [=OTFs=], but also the 2nd fastest behind Masotan, and most agile, assuming they take after their respective machines.
* HeroicRROD: Hoshino pushing F2 and forcing him to stay in Foxtrot puts too much stress on him, causing him to go berserk and burn out.
* HeroicSacrifice: …Which gets even worse in episode 6 when [[spoiler:Hoshino is stuck under logs and he repeatedly uses his afterburners to warn the others that she needs help, causing him to overheat and almost die.]]
* NonstandardCharacterDesign: In contrast to the other [=OTFs=]' cartoony design, Norma has a very fierce and intimidating sharpened look about him.
* PunnyName: Hoshino named him "Norma" after his plane model "F-2", which sounds like "Futsuu", Japanese for "Normal". Liliko sarcastically points out how convoluted this is.
* UndyingLoyalty: Despite being mistreated and overworked by Hoshino, his devotion to her is so strong [[spoiler:he'd stay in Foxtrot indefinitely, even if it meant he'd risk death from overheating, to fulfill Hoshino's desire to be an F-2 Pilot.]]

[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kakiyasu_remi.PNG]]

Hisone and Nao's strait-laced superior, who tries to rein in their reckless behavior.
----
* BerserkButton: Don't ever bring up the man she lost to Moriyama.
* GreenEyedMonster: Both the position of D-Pilot and the man she loved were lost to her by Moriyama. In episode 11 she admits that she projected her own shattered dreams on Hisone because of that.

!!!Voiced by Creator/JunichiSuwabe, Ricardo Rocha (Latin American Spanish)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ikushima_hiroki.PNG]]

The designer for the special D-Pilot uniform, who's very… enthusiastic about his job.
----
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He acts like a pervert and frequently comes up with a number of bizarre and impractical pilot suit designs. But when comes up with a working design... Well, there's a reason why the JSDF contract him for it.
* ChivalrousPervert: Or something. He acts like a pervert and/or HandsomeLech at times, mainly towards Hisone; but this is PlayedForLaughs as he has no romantic interest in her or anyone else, he only obsesses over their bodies because he wants to make their suits fit perfectly. Probably.
* ObliviousToLove: Has no clue that Nao has an obvious crush on him, or just doesn't care enough to pay any attention to it.

[[folder:Haruto Okonogi]]
!!!Voiced by Creator/YuukiKaji (Japanese), Creator/BrycePapenbrook (English), Oscar Lopez (Latin American Spanish), Jaume Aguiló (European Spanish)
A maintenance worker at the Gifu Air Base. He is also the head priest of the mikos for the Ritual and Hisone's love interest.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Natsume calls him "Haru-kun".
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:He is initially assigned to get close to Hisone and later break her heart in order to turn her away from the idea of romance, and he eventually falls in love with her.]]
* ChildhoodFriends: With Natsume, one of the {{Miko}} who are taking part in the Ritual; he's known her since she was a baby, and they grew up in the same town. Natsume very obviously wants to upgrade to a ChildhoodFriendRomance, but he only views her as being like a younger sister.
* SmokingIsCool: Seemingly invoked; Hisone thinks he smokes because he's rather baby-faced and doing so makes him look more mature.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Yutaka Zaito]]
!!!Voiced by Creator/YukitoshiTokumoto (Japanese), Creator/BenPronsky (English), Ricardo Bautista (Latin American Spanish)

A cocky fighter pilot at the Gifu Air Base. A self-proclaimed ladies man, he ends up butting heads with Hoshino after he lets his competitive streak get the best of him in a bid to impress her.
----
* [[BreakHisHeartToSaveHim Break Her Heart To Save Her]]: [[spoiler:He invokes his older womanizing persona and makes Hoshino despise him so she can pilot Norma again]].

[[folder:Sada Hinomoto *WALKING SPOILER*]]
!!!Voiced by Creator/RomiPark (Japanese), Creator/CindyRobinson (English), Ángela Villanueva [Old] and Ana Lobo [Young](Latin American Spanish)
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hinomoto_sada.PNG]]

A mysterious old lady who distributes fruit drinks on the airbase. Her actions and words may or may not have a hidden meaning − Hisone thinks they do at least.
----
* AlmightyJanitor: This jolly old lady who just sells her drinks around the base was Masotan's D-Pilot during the previous Ritual 74 years prior. She becomes the girls' new instructor to prepare them for said Ritual.
* BrokenBird: She was in love [[spoiler:with the former miko Yae, with whom she had promised to travel the world together… but got sacrificed during the Ritual.]] This left her wih deep-rooted regrets that she still carries to this day.
* RedBaron: [[spoiler:She used to be known as "the Heavenly Maiden of Rabaul" thanks to saving many of her comrades as a D-Pilot during the Pacific War.]]
* RetiredBadass: She hasn't piloted for decades, but she still hasn't lost her touch. [[spoiler:Except when her old feelings come back at the worst moment during the flight with Mitatsu-sama.]]
* SilkHidingSteel: As kind as she may appear, her genuine experience and authority seep through when things get serious. Even some of her soft-spoken words hide some harshness [[spoiler:such as when she tells Hoshino to let go of any attachment other than her OTF.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: As noted, she's far beyond what she appears.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Vice-minister Iiboshi]]
!!!Voiced by Yoshimitsu Shimoyama (Japanese), Carlos Hernández (Latin American Spanish)

A government representative who wants to ensure that "the Ritual" is carried out without a hitch, and thus keeps an eye on the D-Pilots.
----
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Because the [=OTF=]s cannot accept a pilot who has fallen in love, Iiboshi devises a plan to prevent that: [[spoiler:make the girls hook up with partners and then brutally cut down their relationships to make them reject love as a whole. Alas Hisone and El fall in love before the second part of the plan can be carried out, causing their [=OTFs=] to reject them a few weeks before the Ritual.]] The plan does end up working in the latter's case though, so it didn't completely backfire.
* NotSoStoic: Only on two occasions does Iiboshi lose his cool. The first time, he gets upset when Nao refuses to trade her kiwi joa for his custard. The second time, [[spoiler: he gets enraged when the D-Pilots, including Hinomoto, decide to complete the Ritual in a way that breaks from tradition. His anger is justified, though, because a lot of people could die if their plan ended up failing.]]
* SweetTooth: He ''really'' loves sweet things and is constantly buying local sweets. He even tries to trade some manju for Nao's kiwi-flavored yogurt, but she refuses him, much to his disappointment.

* {{Tsundere}}:
** She's embarrassed about how Hisone correctly guessed that she was calling her dragon "Norma" instead of "F2" in her mind the whole time, even before she visibly warmed up to him.
** Hoshino also dances around her growing infatuation with the cocky fighter pilot Zaito.

----
* BigEater: During survival training, he ends up eating the entire 3-day supply of rare metals, as well as all the girls' rations.

----
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He acts like a pervert and frequently comes up with a number of bizarre and impractical pilot suit designs.

----
* AffectionateNickname: Natsume calls him "Haru-kun".
