The flashback chapter "Get Lost" shows that when he's in the field and away from the Court's physical presence, his temperament relaxes considerably. He explains that he can't be himself when he's around more than one person. When talking to Jones in Chapter 80, he describes it thus:
--> It's as if...there is a cage around my mind. A cage in which I rattle around and peer out at the world. But the cage forms a barrier between me and my body. It...keeps my body distant, like I can't control it. I can't make it act as I want. I want to take part in life[...] but my mind prevents me. It leaves me unable to interact on a human level with more than one person at a time. When Surma was pregnant, I was hopeful. I thought this time would be different. I could act normally around my own child, surely. But before long, I knew the cage closed once more around my mind. In fact, it was worse. Even when I was alone with Antimony, I was distant from her. I could not be myself.
