A kind and sensitive young man who cries at the drop of a hat, Akira Fudo had a chance reunion with his childhood friend Ryo Asuka one day which leads to him fusing with the demon Amon and becoming Devilman. With his human heart intact after fusing with Amon, Akira uses his newfound dark powers to hunt down demons and protect humanity.

* AdaptationalBadass: While he doesn't have the same amount of powers at his disposal compared to the source material, ''Crybaby'' is one of the few adaptations where Akira ''completely'' consumed Amon's will, since even in his most vulnerable moments, there's no hint of Amon threatening to take over.
* AdaptationalHeroism: Akira was more of an AntiHero[=/=]NominalHero in the manga, especially after his transformation. In ''Crybaby'', Akira is a straight-up hero.
* AdaptationDyeJob: The color of his skin in his Devilman form varies depending on the adaptation, and in ''Crybaby'' it's dark blue.
* {{Adorkable}}: He looks and acts rather endearing before his transformation into a Devilman, but he still has his moments even after.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: His first day back at school as a demon hybrid involves tearing a locked door open with his bare hands, eating like a monster, loudly watching porn in the auditorium, running track while sporting a massive bulge and condescendingly rebuking a frantic crowd of girls' advances. Suddenly, gaggles of schoolgirls are fawning over him wherever he goes.
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler: Akira loses his arm while battling Silene, but is able to regenerate it back later on. This happens again in his fight with Ryo/Satan, losing not only an arm but both his legs as well, and is only able to recover by fusing with other Devilmen. Not that it helped in the long run, however.]]
* AnimeHair: His hair is much wilder after becoming a Devilman.
* TheAntiNihilist: He seems like your typical WideEyedIdealist at first, but he's not ''too'' naive to believe that love and peace can solve everything, and especially after being informed about the demons, knows very well what a harsh reality the world actually is. Nevertheless, he still chooses to fight demons, and despite being gradually broken by the countless losses he experiences throughout the story, he doesn't lose faith in the will of humankind; and believes that when faced with the impossible, it's better to fight back than do nothing.
* ApeShallNeverKillApe: As a Devilman, he's essentially half-human and half-demon. But he pursues only ''demons'', and he seeks to save the other Devilmen. That being said, if those Devilmen choose to side with the enemy instead, Akira won't hesitate to kill them.
* BadassInDistress: Even with his newfound abilities, Akira doesn't always have it easy in his anti-demon crusade. [[spoiler: He would have died in his fight with Silene... had it not been for her kicking the bucket before she could finish him off. There's also his second fight with Xenon, which leaves him wounded enough that he can't ''fly'' back to Miki, which is a really bad thing since otherwise he might have been able to save her from getting lynched.]]
* BeingGoodSucks: He just wanted to use his powers to protect humans, and only asks for them to keep surviving and to be a little less hate-mongering in return. [[spoiler: In the end, he's rewarded with humanity's demise... as well as his own.]]
* BerserkerTears: If you are a demon and see Akira crying, it is probably going to be the last thing you ever see.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Akira is a very nice guy even after his transformation, so long as you are not a demon. However, even kind and compassionate Akira has his limits. [[spoiler: The mob that kills Miki and his friends learn this the hard way when Akira uses his powers to incinerate them.]]
* BigEater: He develops a monstrous appetite as a result of becoming a Devilman.
* BiggusDickus: His transformation gives him a growth in every part of his body. There's an actual scene where his bulge is visible through his skintight gym clothes and it's noticeably big.
* BloodKnight: He revels in every opportunity he gets to fight demons, though he eventually loses this trait by the time the plot takes a much darker turn.
* BloodSplatteredWarrior: Whenever he's fighting demons, he always ends up getting drenched in their blood.
* BookDumb: According to Ryo, Akira isn't exactly doing well in his academics. Whether this is [[spoiler: yet another lie in his false propaganda or not]] isn't clarified, but even if that isn't the case, Akira isn't an idiot by any means.
* BrainsAndBrawn: Akira is the brawn to Ryo's brain.
* BreakTheCutie: Akira suffers many losses over the course of the series. [[spoiler: After going through so much, it is Miki's death that finally breaks him. He doesn't lose his resolve that humans will survive, but he's left without his trademark empathy.]]
* BrokenTears: He cries these at [[spoiler: the deaths of his parents and the entire Makimura family, Miki included]].
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Akira is the Brooding Boy to Miki's Gentle Girl. He's not gloomy so much as he is sensitive, though he does gradually get more and more broken by the events of the story, [[spoiler: and it eventually got to the point that he's no longer able to empathize with anyone]].
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: As a Devilman, he will literally tear his enemies a new one and never goes soft on any of them, and in special cases, [[BewareTheNiceOnes is willing to extend the same courtesy to humans and other Devilmen]]. But beneath Akira's demon-possessed body lies a heart so human that he weeps for the pain of the others, and that same heart is also why Akira chooses to fight demons in the first place.
* CatapultNightmare: Akira wakes up with a jolt after what is less of a nightmare and more of a freaky EroticDream.
* CategoryTraitor: He's seen as one by the other demons, who keep on assuming that he's ''Amon'' and had simply lost his memories.
* ChickMagnet: Following his transformation, Akira becomes a hunky and attractive man that the girls in school absolutely fawn over as he showcases physical prowess and a somewhat cocky way of speaking.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Ryo; even though they haven't met in years, they've known each other since they were kids. He's also known both Miki and Miko for just as long.
* ColorMotif: Naturally, Akira is represented by the color black. Black symbolizes the following -- protection: Akira's desire to keep humankind safe; strength and power: the former referring to his empathy (which is his greatest virtue), the latter referring to his increased physical fortitude after his transformation; and grief: Akira [[spoiler: gradually losing more and more of his loved ones]] throughout the series. Black also tends to be associated with evil, [[DarkIsNotEvil which contradicts Akira in every way]], as well as death, which signifies his goal of eliminating the other demons, [[spoiler: and is also a foreshadowing of his own death]].
* CoolBike: Ryo gives Akira one as a present in Episode 2.
* CosmicPlaything: Ever since he became a Devilman, Akira has been earning more tragedies than victories. [[spoiler: First, he loses his parents to a demon, loses his ''surrogate'' parents and brother due to the latter becoming a Devilman, and finally loses Miki, who was his last anchor to his humanity -- to top it all off, he learns that his best friend is actually his ultimate enemy. It doesn't help that thanks to God, Akira is endlessly destined to suffer so that Ryo/Satan would suffer as well.]]
* CovertPervert: He's not a lecher, but Miki points out that he looks up porn in the family computer. Though after his transformation he becomes brazen enough to watch porn in public in a way where everyone could hear every sound.
* CowardlyLion: Prior to becoming a Devilman, he wasn't exactly strong and is a tad more sensitive. But he wouldn't hesitate to stand up for his loved ones and defend them, even if he knew he stood no chance.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Subverted. While Akira has feelings for Miki, he never acts possessive or paranoid when Miki interacts with anyone else. The one exception is when he sees Miki talk to Nagasaki over the phone, but only because he can see that the other guy's up to no good.
* TheCutie: Prior to the events of Episode 1.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Akira is a Devilman, associated with dark colors and whose demon form is all black and blue; however, he is one of the most morally upstanding characters in the series and a firm representative of the side of good.
* DeathGlare: Akira gives an insanely vicious look to Ryo in Episode 7, complete with bared teeth. That -- combined with him giving a fierce yell -- was more than enough to make Ryo back off and let Akira leave.
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler:He reached this level of misery after losing Miki, and when Ryo warned him that fighting him would mean his own death, Akira wasn't intimidated and implicitly replies that he's NotAfraidToDie.]]
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the StockShonenHero trope. He gets a drastic personality and appearance change after becoming a Devilman, but deep down Akira is still a sensitive and empathetic young boy who just wants to protect the people he cares for, even believing that it's because he has people whom he cherish that he still retains his humanity. He holds nothing back when fighting demons, but he's not immune to feeling sympathy for them if they exhibit signs of humanity; and he tries to reach out to other Devilmen as he knows that they're not monsters but have to hide who they are in fear of being persecuted. Even though he experiences the disadvantages of being a Devilman, along with witnessing the world engaging in a war after learning about demons, he never loses his determination. What is deconstructed is that [[spoiler: unlike most other examples, his heroic traits do not stop grant him anything close to a victory by the end -- not to mention the fact that he completely averts IncorruptiblePurePureness by way of him actually losing his empathy over time, as he endures more and more trauma]].
* DecoyProtagonist: Akira is without a doubt the protagonist of the story and has a huge impact on the plot from the beginning to the end. [[spoiler:But ultimately, the story is not about Akira; rather, it's about Ryo and what he can learn from Akira: love. Everything Akira did was to lead up to it.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: Despite everything happening to him and the world around him, Akira continues to retain his humanity as seen in him still being able to cry. [[spoiler: But Miki's death turns out to be the last straw, breaking him so much that he can no longer shed tears for anyone else.]]
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler: Demons aside, in the final episode Akira lands a lot of blows on the fallen angel Satan. However, this is subverted as despite everything he throws, there's no lasting damage.]]
* DoomMagnet: Not that anyone anywhere is safe from demons, but after becoming a Devilman, [[spoiler: everyone he knows ends up meeting tragic and horrible ends. It's even hinted that he knows this and thus blames himself for it]].
* EmergencyTransformation: Plus possession, which saves his life in time before he becomes one of the many people in the Sabbath who ended up as demon fodder.
* EmotionalBruiser: Akira is a tough, confident badass capable of tearing demons to pieces with his bare hands. However, Akira is also a highly emotional, compassionate young man and cries very easily.
* TheEmpath: While it's not an actual ability, Akira can easily pick up on the sorrow of other people, be they strangers, friends, family, or even animals -- consequently causing him to cry almost nonstop.
* ExtendableArms: He demonstrates this ability in the second episode while taking care of a few demons.
* FailureHero: Akira never has a meaningful, lasting victory. [[spoiler: He even dooms the remainder of the Devilmen and demonkind to extinction in order to wage a futile war against Satan, who he doesn't even come close to killing.]]
* {{Foil}}: Long story short, Akira and Ryo are exact parallels of each other in every step of the way.
* FragileFlower: Deconstructed. In the manga, he was a textbook example of the trope as he used to be the typical crybaby that reacted at the slightest provocation with tears. In this adaptation, Akira cries so easily due to his empathy that it puts people off because they have no idea what he's crying about.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Throughout the span of one Sabbath, Akira turns from a naive and physically frail young boy to a powerful and fearsome demon hybrid who tears apart demons like it was nothing.
* GetItOverWith: Invoked. [[spoiler: When Silene gains the upper hand in their fight after fusing with Kaim, Akira questions why Silene isn't trying to kill him before passing out. When he regains consciousness, he finds out that it's because she died before she could do so.]]
* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: Played with. He knows that humans are capable of committing evil and immediately sees all demons as monsters to be annihilated, but he questions ''why'' humans choose to fight and hate each other.
* GoodIsNotSoft: He's one of the most heroic characters in the series, before and even after he became a Devilman. But as one, he makes it his mission to protect humans from demonkind, and if you're a demon, don't expect him to show you any mercy.
* GutturalGrowler: Post-transformation, there are times when his voice sounds husky and downright animalistic.
* HadesShaded: His skin becomes considerably darker after merging with Amon, and his Devilman form has blackish-blue skin.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: This is Akira's favorite method in dispatching other demons, since he's not stupid enough to leave them half-dead. [[spoiler: Ironically, this is also how he meets his end, courtesy of Satan.]]
* HappilyAdopted: By the Makimura family, in a way. Due to his parents working abroad, Akira has been living with the Makimuras ever since he was a child. He's content living with them though, since they treat him as if he's one of their own, and he also regards them as a second family.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Though Akira is physically weak, it's his kindness and empathy that prevented Amon from possessing, and instead Akira transforms into a powerful HalfHumanHybrid who still has his compassion. It's even that compassion that motivates him to defeat the demons.
* HeIsAllGrownUp: Merging with Amon effectively powers him through puberty overnight, and [[TallDarkAndHandsome the]] [[{{Hunk}} end]] [[BiggusDickus result]] is very well received by his female schoolmates.
* TheHeroDies: [[spoiler: His fate by the end of the series. And unlike most examples, his death is neither a DyingMomentOfAwesome nor was it a HeroicSacrifice that resulted in the rest of humanity being saved; it was a pointless death that shows just how futile all his efforts are in his fight against Satan, and (unknowingly to him) God as well.]]
* HeroicBSOD: He goes through one after [[spoiler: his parents' deaths]], slaughtering demons left and right even without Ryo to keep watch over him, and being unable to keep his more bestial instincts in check. It's ultimately his battle with Silene that snaps him out of it, as he takes out both his emotional and sexual frustrations on her.
* HeroicBuild: He becomes a lot more muscular after becoming a Devilman.
* HeroicHost: He's currently the vessel of Amon, who is one of the -- if not ''the'' -- most powerful demons out there. However, he's able to retain his humanity through and through and fights to defend humans, unlike [[spoiler: Miko (whose personality worsened, even if it was temporary and never really got too far) and Moyuru (who eventually defected to the demons' side)]].
* HeroWithBadPublicity: [[spoiler:Following public knowledge of the existence of demons and believing them to be all evil, Akira finds himself as this towards the humans.]]
* HopelessWithTech: Downplayed; Akira seems to be able to use a computer just fine, but even with the SettingUpdate of the adaptation, he's the only character who doesn't have a phone. Even when he does get one, he initially struggles with learning how to use it.
* HorrorHunger: In Episode 5, it's shown that he has become somewhat addicted to killing demons as a way to satiate his demon side. Ryo eventually convinces him to try to release his energy by having sex with some girl.
* HumansAreFlawed: In contrast to Ryo's belief that HumansAreInsects[=/=]HumansAreMorons, Akira is well-aware that humans are susceptible to negative influences and are more than capable of doing a lot of bad things; but he also believes in their goodwill, their knowledge, and their strength to fight and survive. While he eventually rages that HumansAreTheRealMonsters [[spoiler: at the mob responsible for Miki's death]], he doesn't blame humanity as a whole for what happened, and continues to place his trust in them until the end.
* {{Hunk}}: Following becoming a Devilman, he gets a lot of muscle, height, a strong and athletic build and a [[BiggusDickus nice package]].
* IAmAMonster: Though Akira is normally insistent on the fact that he's ''not'' a demon, at one point he mutters that he ''is'' one after all when Ryo warns him that he's in danger of being exposed.
* IllKillYou: Akira makes this vow to [[spoiler: Satan and demonkind]] in the finale, after [[spoiler: Miki's death]] hardened his resolve to destroy them once and for all.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Akira's pure heart and empathy are what allowed him to not only resist DemonicPossession by one of the strongest demons alive but also [[HijackingCthulhu hijack that power]] and claim it as his own. [[spoiler:However, while he is never corrupted, Ryo's machinations eventually [[DespairEventHorizon break his spirit]] beyond repair.]]
* InelegantBlubbering: This usually happens when his empathy comes into play. Sometimes he's able to stay calm while in tears, but other times his face contorts and all he can do is sob the pain out.
* InnateNightVision: After becoming a Devilman, his eyesight improved to the point that he has no trouble seeing even in the dark, which helps him in his fight with Silene.
* InsistentTerminology: He's a ''Devilman'', not a demon; though this is justified since there are other stark differences between the two besides moral alignment and whether the demon successfully took over or not.
* ItsPersonal:
** He kills every demons he sees because they're a threat to mankind, but in [[spoiler: Jinmen's]] case there's the additional crime of [[spoiler: what the latter did to his parents]].
** [[spoiler: Despite the actions that Ryo pulled in Episode 6 onwards, Akira doesn't see him as the enemy even as he calls him out on his plans a few times. Of course, this is until Miki dies and Akira learns about Ryo's true identity, and by then he has had enough and swears to kill Ryo for what he had done.]]
* KillEmAll: [[spoiler: Akira roasts everyone who killed Miki and company to ashes.]]
* KillTheOnesYouLove: [[spoiler: After Jinmen possessed his father, killed his mother and absorbed her into its shell, [[SelfMadeOrphan Akira is forced to give both of them a second death]].]]
* KindheartedCatLover: When he was a child, Akira did his best to tend to a cat who was already dying.
* KnightInSourArmor: Akira gradually becomes this over the course of the story. He becomes a lot more outspoken and violent post-possession, but he sees his new powers as a way to protect humanity. Even though he faces the possibility of being hunted down because he's part-demon, he refuses to kill any humans even when it would be justifiable. [[spoiler: He eventually incinerates a group of humans in retribution for killing Miki, and now entertains the prospect of an all-out war despite knowing many humans will end up dying (which is something he protested to Ryo a few episodes prior). However, he still believes that humanity will ultimately win against the demons.]]
* LanternJawOfJustice: Akira gets a cleft chin after becoming Devilman.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: He doesn't remember much of what happened when he first transformed, with Ryo having to help fill in the blanks.
* LightningBruiser: As a Devilman, Akira possesses both SuperStrength and SuperSpeed. And due to fusing with one of the most powerful demons, Akira is consequently one of the strongest Devilmen.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Not that either of them are aware of it, but Akira turns out to be one to Ryo since he's the only reason why Ryo has any humanity in him at all. [[spoiler:This is made clear in the ending, since the war ended with both the humans and demons perishing, though Ryo didn't seem to mind as long as Akira is still alive. But when he realizes that's not the case, Ryo is so overwhelmed by sadness (something he never experienced before) that he can only hold Akira's body while crying in grief.]]
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Whereas Ryo informed Akira of his plans to merge him with a demon in the manga, in this adaptation Akira was left in the dark about it and was only told that they would just be filming evidence, and as far as Akira knows, his fusion with a demon was just a coincidence. He does learn the truth later on when Ryo blurts it out in a panic, but he no longer bothers to confront him about it.
* MadeOfIron: Even before becoming a Devilman, Akira is quite resilient. When some of the party-goers at the Sabbath start beating him up (with baseball bats and broken bottles, no less), he's clearly in pain and is already bleeding, but he's still able to stand and run with a mostly-clear head when he sees that Ryo is in danger.
* MenDontCry: Averted in a refreshing manner. He doesn't cry because he easily gets hurt but because he can feel the hurt of those around him; and his tears don't symbolize his weakness, but his strength.
* MessianicArchetype: Even though he's half-demon, he's a nigh-perfect example of this trope. He's TheChosenOne in the sense that Ryo called for the most powerful demon to possess him, he fights for humanity's sake, [[spoiler: and is friends with someone who's not simply a SatanicArchetype but actually ''Satan'' himself -- who then betrays him]]. Even later, he tries to convince a mob to stop stoning innocents, and [[CrucifiedHeroShot stands there with his arms spread out]] while the mob just continues to attack him... with the violence eventually dissipating when the children approach him and hug him, similar to how the children would come to Jesus in the Bible -- and the adults follow suit, which mirrors how many people would line up and have Jesus heal their injuries.
* MoralityChain: Played with in that even though Ryo cares for him, it doesn't stop him from [[spoiler: plunging the world in war and leading demonkind to eradicate the humans]], but Akira's presence in his life still allowed him to eventually learn both love and sorrow, [[spoiler: even if he learns it a bit too late]].
* MoralMyopia: While not as bad as with Ryo, even Akira can be guilty of this. Although he cries for others when they're hurting, there are a few times when Akira ''doesn't''. Despite the occasional argument with Ryo he overlooks any murders by those he cares about as long as it doesn't hurt those close to him or someone he has empathized with like Koda. [[spoiler:In the end, it's only when Miki dies that he truly has a problem with what Ryo's done.]]
* NiceGuy: Even with his rough and manlier appearance post-transformation, he's still the soft-hearted and sensitive young man he's introduced as.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** While it was noble of him, [[spoiler: in hindsight Akira's decision to [[TheFarmerAndTheViper rescue Koda rather than kill him]]]] was a huge mistake, since otherwise the events of Episode 9 [[ForWantOfANail might have played out]] ''[[ForWantOfANail very differently]]''.
** He never does what Miki tells him about not looking at perverse stuff on the living room computer nor did he change the password when it's clear Taro was learning things he shouldn't through it. [[spoiler: That, combined with the aftermath of Koda's rampage, eventually led to Taro's transformation into a Devilman. To be fair, it's likely that even if Akira did the above, Taro still would have turned since like many other kids, Taro would find other ways to look up things that aren't suitable for his age.]]
* NocturnalEmission: He gets an extreme one, where his EroticDream causes him to ejaculate so much semen that it ''plasters the ceiling''. He is appropriately disgusted when he notices it dripping.
* NotHimself: Here, Akira starts off as a meek, shrimpy young man who cries with little provocation. After fusing with Amon, his personality pulls a 180: in addition to gaining an athletic physique, he becomes debonair and cocky. * OrcusOnHisThrone: Played with. [[spoiler: Despite what He has planned for Satan, God never actively does anything in the story. The one exception is Episode 7, but it was simply to make his presence known once again to Satan and the demons. * LivingEmotionalCrutch: Not that either of them are aware of it, but Akira turns out to be one to Ryo since he's the only reason why Ryo has any humanity in him at all. [[spoiler:This is made clear in the ending, since even though the war ended with both the humans and demons perishing, Ryo didn't seem to mind as long as Akira is still alive. But when he realizes that's not the case, Ryo is so overwhelmed by sadness (something he never experienced before) that he can only hold Akira's body while crying in grief.]]

For starters, he has almost zero empathy, is extremely intelligent and manipulative, and while he carries himself with composure it's obvious that he also shows signs of bloodlust. What, or ''who'', keeps him from completely fitting the trope is [[MoralityChain Akira]].

* TechnoWizard: Ryo definitely knows his way with technology, being able to hack passwords, determine someone's identity via composite reconstruction, tap into phones to record conversations or pinpoint someone's location... you name it.
