* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Seriously, nearly every love affair she starts ends up on a dud. Most notably is her engagement to Tony Merrit (who breaks it up once he learns he's mortally ill), and [[LoveTriangle brothers Alex and Haley Marshall]]. No doubt she decided to became a nun!

* TheDanza: Almost. When portrayed by Cheatham, their names can be pronunced the same, though they are not equally written.
* TheOtherDarrin: An interseting case, since role originator Maree Cheatham left the show on 1973 but returned on 1994 and stayed for almost 20 years. So it could be thought as an inversion of the trope.

Initially introduced as Mickey's psychiatrist, Marlena would become one of the heroines of the show and, conversely, one of the most well-known characters. She has survived a lot of kidnappings, killers and even [[ItMakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext demonic posessions]]. One of her most remembered stories ([[ReallyGetsAround and partners]]) would be hers with John Black, with whom she formed a supercouple from the 80's onwards.

* BackFromTheDead: Marlena was supposedly dead multiple times. She was believed dead in a plane crash in 1987 only to return in 1991. In 2004, she was believed dead again after being outted as the Salem Stalker but of course was alive. She was then presumed dead again in 2005 after failing to get off the island in 2005. However in the last case the audience knew she was alive but the rest of the cast did not.

* DemonicPossession: In a ''very'' well remembered plot of 1992, she gets drugged by BigBad Stefano Di Mera and this, [[ItMakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext somehow]], makes her susceptible to the Demon entering her bodya and start wrecking havoc on Salem. At the time it was seen as a ridiculous plot development, but it's been somewhat VindicatedByHistory.

Tom and Alice's eldest daughter and Tommy's twin sister, she actually spent very little time on the show actually alive, and is primarily remembered nowadays as being the deceased mother of current characters Julie and Hope. And for having her younger daughter with her elder daughter's love interest.

* AbsenteeActor: Though he stopped appearing regularly in 2006, Mickey was supposed to still live in Salem at his house with Maggie until his death. He was most often referred to as being just in the other room.

As with any long-running soap opera, there's LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters, so this will try to only include fairly significant ones. In order to not make this a massive info dump, we've split it up into folders based on when the character first appeared on the show. For characters that were born on the show, they'll be included in the folder where they first became non-child recurring characters, and were actually teens or older and part of the plot.

* BadassBeard: Though beards were fairly common in the 1980s when Bo came around, we're long past the point where anything above PermaStubble is common for a leading character. But Bo Brady's holding on to his beard 'til the bitter end.

* DemotedtoExtra: Averted in recent years. Once he became Mayor he was put into the forefront of a lot more storylines after over a decade of being a recurring character.

* {{Expy}}: Though this one hasn't been admitted, he'd appear to be a blatant rip-off Snake Plissken from ''Escape from New York''. Hell, some consider him just a blonde Bo Brady with an eyepatch. His rise to to a main hero pretty much coincided with Bo's departure.

* BrokenBase: Since his run in the 2000s was generally uneventful, many fans think it diminished the iconic nature of the character to have negated his deah, taking him from a 1980s icon unsullied by poorer writing of recent decades to a far more forgettable character. Others were just so happy to have him back, they didn't care.

* DemotedtoExtra: Though it's not quite that bad, in the past few years Abe's role on the show has been severely downgraded.
