* ForWantOfANail: It's implied that Buffy becoming the Slayer ruined his and Joyce's marriage because he couldn't handle the stress and danger. He only starts being a DisappearedDad after Buffy gets expelled and runs away for the summer, failing to pick her up to see an ice show on her eighteenth birthday. Joss Whedon confirmed that his alternate self in "Normal Again" is at least part of a parallel timeline where Buffy had no powers and instead developed some mental disorder with hallucinations, so he would have stayed together with Joyce if only to help his daughter with her mental illness.
