[[folder:As a whole]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kieee.jpg]]
* AdaptationDyeJob:
** Finland has light blond hair and violet eyes in the manga. In seasons one to four, his hair is the same yellow-blond shade that England and France have, while his eyes are dark brown. His hair and eye color were changed that of the manga in season five onwards.
** Sweden usually has light blond hair in the merchandise and illustrations, yet the anime series initially gave him sandy brown hair and changed his blue-green eyes to a deep brown. This was thankfully corrected in later episodes to him having only brighter blond hair and purely blue eyes. Season 5 changed his colors once more, to match his manga color scheme.
** Iceland has purple eyes in the manga, but recieved blue eyes in ''World Series'', though he also initially had them in the earliest manga illustrations. In ''The Beautiful World'' (season 5), his eyes are changed back to purple, but his hair is now blond to match the other Nordics instead of silver.
* ADogNamedDog: Or rather, a puffin named "Puffin," an outlier in a series where most of the nations' animal companions have non-species names. Norway's troll companion is also just called "Troll."
* AffectionateNickname:
** Finland [[TheNicknamer has the most affectionate names for the other Nordics]]: He calls Denmark "Ta-san" (from the Finnish name for Denmark, Tanska). He refers to Sweden as "Su-san" (often rendered as "Mr. Sve"), calls Norway "Noru-kun" (rendered as just "Nor") and calls Iceland "Ice-kun" (rendered as just "Ice"). The other Nordics call him "Fin" in return.
** Norway calls Denmark ''"anko,"'' a term analogous to ''"onii-chan"'' (the familiar form of "big brother"). Scanlations generally render it as "Bro" or "brother." All of the Nordics refer to him in turn as "Nor," and Denmark also calls him "brother" ''(kyoudai)'' and "best buddy" ''(shinyuu)''.
** Iceland calls Sweden "Sví," from Sweden's Icelandic name, Svíþjóð. He calls Denmark "Dan," short for Denmark's name in Icelandic, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian (Danmark). The older Nordics just call Iceland "Ice."
** Norway and Denmark usually call Sweden "Sverige" (Sweden's name in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian) in canon. Since then, many fanworks have Finland or Denmark calling Sweden "Sve" regularly.
* TheAlcoholic: Denmark is the heaviest drinker in Northern Europe, and it's TruthInTelevision. Norway calls him a drunk in the Nordic Drama CD.
** Finland is a close second, complete with AlcoholHic in the Nordic Five Drama CD, as well as in the dub of the Polish-Swedish War OVA. If it isn't beer, {{Fanon}} does have him drink vodka if given the chance. His character song ''Moi Moi Sauna♪'' states he also likes cider.
* AscendedExtra: They've gotten prominent over the years as well.
* BadassLongcoat: Denmark's usual uniform is a long, black and red coat, while Sweden wears a dark blue one for his military uniform.
* BigBrotherInstinct: All of the older Nordics act this way toward Iceland to varying degrees[[note]] In descending order: Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden[[/note]], much to his embarrassment and annoyance.
-->'''Iceland's World☆Stars Character Profile''': He is beloved by the other Nordics like a little brother, but he's old enough now that he wants them to stop. [[UpToEleven Especially Norway]].
* BigFancyHouse: In the manga, the Nordics gathered for lunch and Iceland's "announcement" in a house that looked pretty average-sized. In the anime, said house is much bigger.
** In the manga and third interval CD, the 'house' is actually a bar at Sweden's place, so it is safe to assume the same for the anime.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Iceland has an awareness of the fourth wall. He introduced himself in the beginning of TheMovie. Mentioned to the audience if they expected him to do something in the "Making a Good Product in Northern Europe" strip. And during ''Manga/{{Hetaween 2011}}'', after commenting about the other Nordics acting like kids, he looks behind him and tells the audience to stop staring at him.
** Finland also has fourth wall-awareness, as he introduces the Nordics directly to the audience in most, if not all of the Nordic-centric strips and a few episodes.
* ChildhoodFriends: Denmark and Norway were this, at the very least. Norway even refers to Denmark as ''"anko,"'' a term that Himaruya described as having an "older brother" or "classmate"-like nuance.
* CloudCuckooLander: Just look at Finland's [[http://www.hetarchive.net/scanlations/nonlinear.php?fnln original name suggestions]] for their pup. It's mentioned in his ''World☆Stars'' profile:
-->He's a bit strange, but that's what makes him charming.
** Norway shows signs of this, like when the Nordics discuss producing Icelandic furniture:
--->'''Sweden:''' I'll do the manufacturing...
--->'''Norway:''' Then I'll dance.
--->'''Finland:''' You're going to dance?!
** Possibly Denmark as well, as in the Hetalia World Academy strips, he told the Newspaper Club that when the Nordics find themselves in trouble, all the Nordic furniture from all around the world will combine to form [[HumongousMecha a giant robot]].
* FiveManBand: Some fans apply these dynamics to the Nordics:
** TheHero: Finland (Nordic-centric strips are often from his POV)
** TheLancer: Sweden (Finland's husband, er, [[HoYay partner]])
** TheBigGuy: Denmark (BoisterousBruiser, with an axe as his WeaponOfChoice)
** TheSmartGuy: Norway (DeadpanSnarker, can see spirits, gives Denmark snark and concrit)
** TheChick: Iceland (The younger of the Nordics, barring Sealand. This might change, of course)
** TagAlongKid: Sealand (Sweden's "adoptive child"), also Ladonia.
** TeamPet: Iceland's puffin and Hanatamago.
* Newer strips suggest a slightly different layout:
** TheHero: Denmark (self-proclaimed leader of the Nordics, and most outgoing.)
** TheLancer: Norway (Critical of Denmark but usually at his side)
** TheBigGuy: Sweden (The strongest and the quietest)
** TheSmartGuy: Finland (overlapping with the GenericGuy, but is less quirky than his companions.)
** TheChick: Iceland. (And aware of it, no less!)
** TheSixthRanger: Estonia. (In his own mind, at least...)
* {{Foil}}: Denmark and Norway. Norway is deadpan, practical-minded, somewhat cynical and sarcastic, while Denmark is adventurous, outgoing, expressive, excitable and unfailingly optimistic.
* FormerTeenRebel[=/=]RetiredOutlaw: Sweden, Denmark and Norway are considered this after their old Viking days. A discussion about Valhalla even mentions that Denmark wouldn't have minded going there when he was younger, but confessed he would rather retire by a countryside if he could in modern times.
* GhostPirate: They dressed as ghost pirates for ''Manga/{{Hetaween 2011}}''.
* [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend He Is Not My Husband]]: Sweden calls Finland his wife. Finland does not like it at all.
* [[HugeGuyTinyGirl Huge Guy Tiny]] ...[[HugeGuyTinyGirl Other Guy]]: Sweden is at least 12 cm. taller than [[HoYay his partner]], Finland.
* IntentionalEngrishForFunny: There are many instances of them doing this in the dub.
-->'''Iceland:''' (over a map of Iceland) Hey, Iceland here! This is map kicks ass!
* InvisibleToNormals: Denmark and Finland cannot see Norway's magical friends. For a while, it was ambiguous as to whether Iceland could see them. ''World☆Stars'' confirmed that he ''can'' see them, but he pretends that he can't. As for Sweden, it's unknown if he can or can't see them.
* NatureLover: Finland, as seen in ''World☆Stars'', much to Iceland's chagrin. Norway's character song ''My house is… Quiet. ~With the Trolls~'' alludes to him being this as well.
* NiceGuy: Finland is very sweet-tempered and friendly, and Sweden is this underneath his intimidating aura.
* NiceHat: Denmark's trademark headgear, the sailor cap Norway wears with his military uniform, the beret Finland wears with his military uniform, and the hat that Sweden wears with his military uniform.
* NonHumanSidekick: Finland and his pet dog Hanatamago, Iceland's puffin, and Norway's faeries and nisse.
* NoodleIncident: The Nordics had their ''6781st'' meeting in a random strange place during the Manga/HetaliaBloodbath2010.
* NorseByNorsewest: Played straight and subverted. (Descriptions on Scandinavian stereotypes they are based on can be found [[http://folk.uio.no/geirthe/Scandinavian_images.html here]].)
* NoSell: A young Russia calls down General Winter to help him when he's attacked by Sweden and Denmark...only for him to have no effect on them, since they were born in a cold area and are used to the cold.
* OddFriendship[=/=]VitriolicBestBuds: If their relationships are just [[JustFriends platonic]], Sweden and Finland, and Norway and Denmark are this respectively.
* OneHeadTaller: While they're not an OfficialCouple, the height difference between Finland and Sweden is very pronounced, and in FanWorks pairing them up it tends to get exaggerated...sometimes to the point that Finland is drawn being as short as ''Sealand.''
* PerpetualFrowner: Sweden, Norway and Iceland are like this; Sweden and Iceland have smiled on a couple of occasions, while Norway only seems to smile when [[BigBrotherInstinct doting on or teasing Iceland.]]
* TheQuietOne: Sweden and Norway speak much less than the other Nordics. While Norway seems to be unconcerned with the everyday world, Sweden at times ''wants'' to say more, but he gets ''very'' easily embarrassed.
* RedOniBlueOni: Denmark and Finland are red oni to Norway and Sweden's blue oni respectively. Although Denmark is also red to Sweden's blue.
* TheRival: Sweden and Denmark, at least in the past. TruthInTelevision considering the two countries' history of war against each other have rivaled England and France.
* [[SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl Savvy Tall Guy, Energetic Short Guy]]: Arguably, Sweden and Finland.
** Inverted as [[SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl Savvy Short Guy, Energetic Tall Guy]] in the case of Norway and Denmark.
* ShrinkingViolet: Norway describes himself as "painfully shy" in Hetalia Fantasia 2, and when Finland introduces the Nordics to the audience in one strip he's seen hiding his face and trying to slink away.
** Iceland doesn't like having attention on himself, and gets embarrassed when the other Nordics playfully tease him.
* TheStoic: Sweden and Norway are not as expressive as the other Nordics. Norway is a [[SugarandIcePersonality quiet and mysterious]] stoic. While Sweden is a FaceOfAThug, GentleGiant one.
* StockholmSyndrome: A possible and quite cynical take on Sweden and Finland's relationship when taking into consideration that Stockholm is Sweden's capital city. Subverted due to Sweden's GentleGiant nature, which is quite different from the historical take of their relationship. Others speculate that it actually [[LimaSyndrome goes both ways...]]
** [[AMatchMadeInStockholm A Match Made In Lima]]: Like with Finland, a take of Stockholm and Lima is viewed with Norway and Sweden during their [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_between_Sweden_and_Norway third union]]. Where Sweden tried to invoke Stockholm Syndrome on Norway only to fall into Lima first. Norway in turn knew Sweden tried to do this, only to warm up to him when their union became a more equal relationship.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Without the hairclip holding his bangs, Norway looks a lot like Iceland.
** Sweden has family ties to Germania and has an uncanny resemblance to Prussia and Germany as well.
* SupernaturalIsPurple: Iceland, alluding to the Icelandic culture being akin to the belief of nature spirits and the atmosphere of the Northern Lights. Finland as well, connecting to him being Santa.
* TalkingAnimal: Hanatamago can talk during the ChristmasEpisode. Finland is surprised but doesn't think too much of it when they start to read some fan letters.
** Mr. Puffin is also quite the chatterbox.
* TaremeEyes: Finland ([[{{Moe}} cute]], [[NiceGuy nice]] variant) and Denmark (badass variant).
* TohokuRegionalAccent: Sweden speaks in the Tohoku dialect specifically, while Norway speaks in the Tsugaru dialect, and Denmark speaks in the Ibaraki dialect.
* TrueCompanions: They've become this in modern times.
* TheWorfEffect: The Nordics suffer from this in the 2010 Bloodbath. Only Iceland is spared because [[FunctionalGenreSavvy he's the only one who felt like something bad was going to happen.]] As for Denmark...no one knows where he is... [[spoiler: Until the very end.]]

[[folder:Republic of Finland - Tino Väinämöinen]]
[[quoteright:172:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/finland8.png]]
-> ''How about "Go for it, Bomber"?!''

->Voiced by: Creator/TakahiroMizushima (JP), Creator/ClintBickham (EN)

The country known for the aurora and rumoured to be where Santa lives. Specializes in agriculture and forestry, high-tech machinery, as well as a variety of talented people. Was once the underling of Sweden and Russia but was able to gain independence after fighting with these larger nations and is now working hard. Also loves interesting festivals; every year he'd think of weird festivals that no other countries can even imagine.

A gentle young man with simplistic tenacity. He seems very adult-like, and if you start talking with him it’ll last forever. But even though this guy appears to be all soft and mellow, you won't want to mess with him; even if he lets you poke him up to ten times, any more than that and he'll return it many times over. He’s strangely strong in the cold, but he also loves saunas. He likes and looks up to Sweden, and also has a rather unique taste in things.

[[hardline]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: "Even though he appears to be all soft and mellow, you won't want to mess with him!"
* BladeOnAStick: [[http://www.txq.nu/hetalia/Hetalia_vol_3_Nordics_01sm.jpg As a baby]], he [[TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior totes one around]] as a WeaponOfChoice.
** SniperRifle: The {{fanon}} guess of his modern WeaponOfChoice as a ShoutOut to UsefulNotes/SimoHayha. Later hinted in Manga/HetaliaBloodbath2011 [[http://i42.tinypic.com/jsdo28.jpg as seen here]].
*** And officially confirmed in [[http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-1424.html this update]].
* [[BoisterousBruiser Boisterous,]] CuteBruiser - If you read the strip referring to the [[http://community.livejournal.com/hetalia/15100.html Polish-Swedish war]], you'll notice that Finland is [[BoisterousBruiser quite eager and happy to get into battle]], literally ''crying'' because Sweden called off the battle.
* ChristmasInJuly: We got his version of Hatafutte Parade at the end of June, so it has a certain element of this.
** He mentions that he can't wait for Christmas in his cameo in the movie; the movie was released in June 2010 in Japan (the joke also works for the UK DVD release, in which it came out in June 2012).
* DrowningMySorrows: After Sweden calls off the battle with Lithuania and Poland.
* FishOutOfWater: Sort of. He sometimes feels strange and alienated when with the other Nordics due to the fact that he's the only one whose language isn't Northern Germanic.
* FreudianSlip: One instance in the dub:
-->'''Finland:''' Now, scary Sweden -- I mean, ''Mr.'' Sweden...
* CordonBleughChef: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salty_liquorice Salty licorice]], anyone?
* ForeignQueasine: Unlike England, Finland knows how to cook. ''If only he wouldn't''.
* FriendlySniper: {{Fanon}} portrayal of him.
* {{Glomp}}: Does this to Estonia upon reuniting with him after leaving Denmark's control.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He's ''very'' close to Estonia; the two have known each other for a while, are said to plan festivals together, and Estonia begs Finland to put in a good word for him with the other Nordics.
* MeaningfulName: Väinämöinen is the name of the hero of the Finnish/Karelian epic poem ''Literature/TheKalevala''.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: He spends a lot of ''Running Away With Mr. Swe'' mentally kicking himself after his spontaneous decision to run away from Denmark's house with Sweden, as he's inwardly terrified of his new companion.
* NightmareFetishist: Hinted at in ''World☆Stars'', where the Nordics discuss designs for Nordic-themed hotel rooms:
-->'''Finland:''' For mine...let's see...I want to make it a jet black room with skulls and chains and an ambiance that makes you want to scream!
-->'''Denmark:''' ...Cant'cha make it a little softer?!
* OddFriendship: His ''World☆Stars'' profile mentions that he gets along well with [[AnIcePerson General Winter]]. Yes, ''that'' General Winter.
* ThePollyanna: He's said to be the Nordic that's suffered the most hardships in life, but he keeps an upbeat and cheerful attitude despite that.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Is it Tino or Timo? There are more Timos in Finland...
** Of course, considering the theme naming in this series (see above for Finland's surname), some fans [[WildMassGuessing are wondering if his name]] isn't '''[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simo_Häyhä Simo.]]'''
* {{Squee}}: He's prone to doing this often, normally when alcohol, sweets and saunas are involved.
* SurpriseSantaEncounter: The UrExample, of course. In most European traditions, Santa lives in Lapland instead of the North Pole.
* SweetTooth: Says he likes sweet food in ''Moi Moi Sauna♪'', and he loves to drink alcohol and eat sweets together.
* ThwartedEscape: In ''Running Away With Mr. Swe,'' he's prepared to slip away in the middle of the night when Sweden falls asleep...only for Sweden to embrace him because Finland mentioned offhand that he was shaking because he was cold.
* [[ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend Violently Protective Non-Wife]]: When Sweden goes down in the 2010 Christmas Event, Finland reacts ''very'' strongly. [[spoiler: Too bad he goes down too.]]
* WholesomeCrossdresser: He wears a long gown during the ''Manga/HetaliaHetaween2013'' event, dressing up as an opera house ghost.
* {{Wimpification}}: Poor Finland may be the biggest victim of this in the APH fandom, after England and Lithuania.
** Thankfully a good amount of the fandom prefers to write him as badass, or take a third option and make him a CuteBruiser who's mostly nice, but unafraid of facing people when he's upset or his friends are threatened.

[[folder:Kingdom of Sweden - Berwald Oxenstierna]]
[[quoteright:149:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sweden24.png]]
-> '''Nd m'wif.''

->Voiced by: Creator/KeikouSakai (JP), Creator/RobertMcCollum (EN)

Formerly a Viking that was known as the Lion of Northern Europe, Conqueror of the Baltic Sea, and even the Supreme Ruler of Scandinavia, but nowadays he’s calmed down and put a lot of strength into welfare.

A quiet, methodical guy with an intimidating air and is difficult to understand. On the inside he’s kind and rather playful, but many people fear him because of his intimidating air and that no ones knows what he's thinking. He likes debates and making furniture and decorative arts.

[[hardline]]
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: As far as we know, anyway, Finland isn't into the whole "wife" thing.
* AwesomeMcCoolname: "Oxenstierna" is [[YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe Ye Olde Butcherede Swedishe]] for "Oxenstjärna"; "Ox star". TruthInTelevision as most Swedish surnames stem from a time where you came up with a name by smashing two nouns together in an effort to sound [[RuleOfCool cooler]] than the next-door neighbour.
** His first name Berwald can be traced back to the German Baerwald which means bear forest. In the end, his name can mean [[NinjaPirateZombieRobot Bear Forest Ox Star]].
** He also shares a surname with Swedish historical figure ''Axel'' Oxenstierna.
* BespectacledBastardBoyfriend: Subverted: since he looks like one of these yet is anything ''but'' cruel and cold.
* {{BFS}}: His WeaponOfChoice is a two-hands sword.
** DualWield: Official art has shown him with either his BFS or what could be [[SimpleStaff a quarterstaff]].
* TheBigGuy: Subverted. He's the tallest of all the nations along with Russia, but hardly acts like it.
* [[CreepyBlueEyes Creepy,]] IcyBlueEyes: His eyes give off a cold, piercing vibe to anyone who first meets him.
* DeathGlare: Although it's pretty much [[PerpetualFrowner his normal]] [[FaceOfAThug facial expression]], whether he likes it or not.
* {{Determinator}}: He ''walks across a frozen strait'' to get to Denmark. No wonder Denmark was shaking.
* {{Emoticon}}: 回言回
* EmotionSuppression: It's said that he's actually overcome with emotions, though he never lets them show.
* FaceOfAThug: His height and serious face scares ''everyone''. Even if he doesn't intend it.
* FreudianExcuse: It's said that he speaks rarely because he was born in a cold area.
* GentleGiant[=/=]RealMenWearPink: Sweden looks like a huge and scary BigGuy... but is very domestic, an excellent babysitter and even sews his old clothes personally before giving them to Finland when the other remarks on their height difference.
* HouseHusband: He's better at cooking than Finland.
* [[HugeSchoolgirl Huge Male Nation-tan]]: In the 5th anniversary strip, Sweden genuinely wants to say some nice things to the fans... but is so blushy and embarrassed that he cannot, much to his and Finland's dismay.
--> '''Sweden''': I wanna say all kinds of nice things... but... (HUGE BLUSH)... 'm embarr'ssed!
--> '''Finland''': Hey! Su-san! Whoa, are you okay?!
* InnocentInnuendo: When Finland muses that it would be nice to have a child around after he and Sweden lose track of little America, Sweden responds that he'll "try his best". Finland is a little freaked out and confused as to what he means.
* LethalChef: His surströmming (fermented baltic herring) can supposedly be used as a weapon.
* ManlyGay: Very tall, muscular and was once a Viking. Old notes confirm him to be homosexual.
* ParentalSubstitute: He's been acting as an adoptive father to Sealand since he bought him off eBay.
* PerpetualFrowner: Ooooooh, so much. The two times he's been shown smiling in the comic was when he "adopted" Sealand... by purchasing him off the internet. [[NoYay Not like that, you know.] The other time, he's seen smiling at Finland at the end of the Polish-Swedish Wars strip.
* RetiredBadass: "The Lion of Northern Europe," "Supreme Ruler of Scandinavia..." Yeah, he's calmed down considerably since those days.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Apparently, Himaruya's old notes say that he's "gay for Finland". It may stand from a Finnish stereotype that all Swedish men are gay, dating back from the period when homosexual activity was legal in Sweden while still outlawed in Finland.
* StoicSpectacles: He speaks in a grunting dialect, rarely changes his fearsome facial expression, and scares pretty much everybody when they first meet him.
* TheUnintelligible: In {{Fanon}} due to failed attempts by fan tranlators to localize his original TohokuRegionalAccent, leaving him with a barely intelligible, grunting speech. Often cranked UpToEleven in fandom, wh'ch m'ks 't 'nb'r'bl.
** [[MemeticMutation Sp't 'n m' b'tt F'nl'nd!]]
* UnwantedSpouse: Some fans interpret he's this to Norway based on the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_between_Sweden_and_Norway third Sweden/Norway Union]].
* WeaponOfMassDestruction[=/=]ForeignQueasine: It was humorously noted in Sweden's original character profile that he was making massive amounts of [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surströmming Surströmming]] - "...the food that can pretty much be used as an ultimate weapon."
* [[WhenSheSmiles When He Smiles]]: The only times he was ever seen smiling was when he adopted Sealand (shown [[http://www.hetarchive.net/scanlations/nonlinear.php?ea here]], scroll down to the bottom of the page), and it was adorable. The other time is when he's seen smiling at Finland at the end of the Polish-Swedish Wars strip.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kingdom of Denmark]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/denmark8.png]]
-> ''"No matter how I see it, you guys ''do'' look like brothers. You know, the way you're weirdly scary, and how you have weird friends. And to begin with, we're all something like brothers. And ''I'' am the elder brother... WAH!""''

->Voiced by: Creator/HiroshiShimozaki (JP), Montgomery Sutton (EN, ''World Series''), Creator/GregAyres (EN, ''The Beautiful World'' onwards)

[[HotBlooded He is the fireball of energy of Northern Europe]]! A powerful big brother who, in the old days, was full of guts and fought with Sweden! Today, he's come to calm down considerably, and puts his strength into social services, organic products, and making furniture.

He's optimistic and easy-going, and is the liveliest of the Nordics. Sometimes so lively that it irritates the other nations or gets himself into trouble. This is where he differs from Norway's soft side, where Norway has a bit of a secretive streak in the fact that he is interested in magic, while Denmark just about has a nice side, and likes stories with happy endings. He is also somewhat arrogant, to the point of being bossy sometimes.

[[hardline]]

* ArrowCatch: He did this when [[{{Yandere}} Belarus]] threw a [[ImprobableWeapon clothes hanger]] at him for mouthing off that his group will likely win the costume contest. Of course, Denmark and Finland just [[ThreatBackfire looked forward to everyone doing their best.]]
* AnAxeToGrind: In the official art, Denmark has an axe as his WeaponOfChoice.
** CoolSword: He's also shown to wield a longsword.
* BeneathTheMask: According to WordOfGod, he's much different than how he appears.
** More specifically, it's said that while he appears to be carefree, he's actually very hardworking.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Considers himself the older brother to all of the Nordics and acts like it, much to Norway's annoyance where Iceland is concerned.
* BigBrotherMentor[=/=]ParentalSubstitute: Acted as this toward Iceland when he was young, like giving him advice on how to make friends.
-->'''Denmark:''' I raised Ice, you know!
* BigOlEyebrows: While not ''nearly'' to [[UpToEleven England's level]], his eyebrows are drawn thicker than most other characters'.
* BloodKnight: He just won't back out from fighting Sweden. Also, when Sweden was under his rule, he seemed to have a huge grin on his face while challenging Russia.
* BoisterousBruiser: He's often depicted as such in fanworks. Considering how he's shown drinking beer in one of the two strips he's been in and how loud he is in his opinions (to the point that Norway strangles him with his tie). [[http://www.horror-vacui.net/hetarchive/scanlation/shorts/index.php?10-09-11 It's pretty much confirmed here]].
* CantHoldHisLiquor: He's falling off his chair drunk in the Nordic Five CD, and Norway ends up having to take him home.
* CassandraTruth: Played for laughs in the 2011 April Fool's event. Iceland doesn't believe him when he says there's a flying cow outside. [[CueTheFlyingPigs Naturally, there is.]]
* CheshireCatGrin: In Finland's flashback.
* {{Determinator}}: He's not the type to give up without a fight.
* DumbBlond: Although it's ''very'' likely he's got some [[SmarterThanYouLook hidden smarts somewhere]].
** His chess score against Norway is 1 to 346.
* HotBlooded: Evident when his eyes and right hand were glowing over his excitement on the Nordic Club's furniture making/design discussion activities in the Hetalia World Academy strips.
* InnocentBlueEyes: They're representative of his cheerful, boisterous and youthful nature. Also contrasts with Norway's OccultBlueEyes.
* {{Keet}}: He's perpetually energetic, excitable, and loud.
* TheLeader: Considers himself the leader of the Nordics and takes the job ''very'' seriously, though the other Nordics don't really acknowledge him as such. He gets stressed out in the ''Hetaween 2013'' event when he thinks that the other Nordics are lonely and calls himself "not worthy" of being their leader if he can't tell when they're unhappy.
** TeamDad: Tries to be this by extension.
* PerpetualSmiler: He's almost always smiling, very optimistic, and unflappably cheerful.
--> '''Denmark:''' You know it's always sunny when I'm around!
* SarcasmBlind: Doesn't seem to notice when Norway insults him.
* SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud: In Hetalia Fantasia.
* SelectiveObliviousness: It's suggested that he ignores any aggressiveness in the air in favor for a cheerful demeanor, as shown when he happily wishes luck to Belarus' group in Hetaween 2011 after she just threw a hanger at him and declared that their group would win.
* ShonenHair: Just look at it. And he's ''definitely'' HotBlooded.
* [[SmallNameBigEgo Small Country, Big Ego]]: Seems to believe he's amazing and knows everything. The others think differently...
** Denmark seems to care about looking cool in front of others; in Hetalia Fantasia, he freaks out trying to deny it when Norway admits that they're lost, and when Sweden crosses a frozen strait to get at him, he keeps a brave face despite being inwardly terrified because he doesn't want to look uncool in front of Norway.
** When introducing himself in one strip, he brags loudly about his accomplishments and history, to the point of an ImagineSpot with the other Nordics praising him (in reality, they're very unimpressed).
* TotallyRadical: The dub gives him a mild version of this, with him saying things like "fo' sho'" and "Holmes."
* {{Yandere}}: Many (but not all) fanworks depict him like this, mainly when paired with Sweden (and to a smaller degree, when with Norway). Less in the [[StalkerWithACrush "I stalk you because I love you"]] sense, more in the [[InterplayOfSexAndViolence "I will beat and subdue you]] [[BastardBoyfriend because I love you"]] one.
** ''Possibly'' confirmed [[http://community.livejournal.com/kalmarunionen/222272.html in the artbook of Volume 3]]. He's either this or a StepfordSmiler.
-->'''Volume 3''' (on Denmark): "Poking England, using Russia as a shield, he's quite the active young man. I feel like his personality will turn out to be the complete opposite of his outward appearance."
** Add the notes that was listed during the final page of 2010 Bloodbath. Himaruya stated the next time he appears, it won't be in a positive light. Then again, this ''is'' [[TeasingCreator Himaruya]] we're talking about: he often says/writes things and then puts 'em on the shelf.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kingdom of Norway]]
[[quoteright:202:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/norway5.png]]
-> ''"Hurry up and start saying it, you! Bro-o-ther!"''

->Voiced by: Creator/MasamiIwasaki (JP), Alex Organ (EN)

A young man with a mysterious aura and can see fairies and ghosts. He speaks very little and appears like he's not concerned about the world's problems. He always gets into a fight with his little brother Iceland over mackerels. His hobby is poking at Denmark in a strange way.

[[hardline]]
* AllTrollsAreDifferent: He has a gigantic green troll that appears to defend his master if needed. Norway even remarks how his friends are stronger than England's.
* TheBeastmaster: He can send his fairy friends to do his bidding; he does so when he tries to get Iceland to call him "big brother," and again in ''World☆Stars'' when he wants Iceland to tell him what's bothering him.
-->'''Iceland:''' (being harassed by Boyg) Okay, fine! If I tell you, will you stop pestering me?!
-->'''Finland:''' Huh? What happened all of a sudden, Ice?!
-->'''Norway:''' (striking a dramatic pose) That is the power of the bond between brothers.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Iceland. He even demands Iceland call him "brother" in one strip, like the quote above states. Cranked UpToEleven in the anime with him even [[StageWhisper whispering the request]] [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything in Iceland's ear]].
** It gets to the point where he gets annoyed whenever Denmark acts like a big brother toward Iceland.
--->'''Norway (to Denmark):''' Stop acting all big brother like that.
** [[DotingParent Doting Big Brother]]: Iceland remarks that Norway is always "needlessly attentive" toward him.
* BlackMagic: Hetalia Bloodbath 2010 alludes that he is able to use strange abilities when commenting Sweden's sudden collapse from fighting [[spoiler: Parallel!France #23.]]
* CarryABigStick: He is shown to carry a mace as a WeaponOfChoice in the official art.
* TheComicallySerious: Keeps his deadpan expression and straightforward attitude no matter the situation.
-->'''Norway (to a Denmark excited about a snowstorm):''' Well, don't be surprised if the cold gives you a cold.
* [[CreepyBlueEyes Creepy,]] OccultBlueEyes: Alludes to his ability to do [[BlackMagic black magic]], as well as creating a contrast to Denmark's more [[InnocentBlueEyes bright and shining blue eyes]]. Although some art has them look [[TechnicolorEyes purplish.]]
** MonochromaticEyes: The only Nordic to have them.
* CutenessProximity: Has shown signs of this, like wanting to pet England's magical flying rabbit because he thinks it's cute, and shopping for pink stuffed bunnies during the 2009 April Fool's Event.
* TheCynic: He's prone to negativity, especially in comparison to Denmark's optimism.
* DeadpanSnarker: Apparently limited to Denmark. [[InsultBackfire Who does not get it]].
* DudeLooksLikeALady: During his younger days anyway, [[http://hetalia.kitawiki.net/images/d/d6/Teen_Norway.png I mean look at him!]]
* {{Emoticon}}: 廿_廿†
* FairyTales: WordOfGod has said that his design as a mysterious character was inspired by Norwegian fairytales.
* IdiotHair: He has a floating one on the side of his head, accompanied by a dot. It's hinted the hair represents his [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiord fjords]] from the Volume Four thank you postcard.
* InterspeciesFriendship: He's very close with the fairies and nisse from his place, as evident in his character song ''My house is… Quiet. ~With the Trolls~''. There's also his close relationship with Troll itself.
* MonochromaticEyes: Giving off his ethereal, mysterious feel.
* [[NecktieLeash Necktie Noose]]: In one episode he strangled Denmark with his own tie, and again in the second Hetalia Fantasia CD.
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: Has been depicted with fairies in a few pieces of official art.
* TheStraightMan: Plays this to Denmark.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: While he's generally cold on the surface, he's ''much'' sweeter when doting on Iceland. He has also shown a softer side to Denmark on occasion.
* TranquilFury: At least in the anime, he is shown to be able to strangle Denmark with a pretty straight face. When paired with Denmark, his characterization is a...
* {{Tsundere}}: The fans are ''very'' fond of making him one towards Denmark, and to [[SlapSlapKiss quite]] [[DomesticAbuse violent]] [[BelligerentSexualTension extents]]. [[{{Fanon}} Not that this has much backing in the character profile he eventually got]], although [[http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-663.html strangling Denmark with his own tie]] certainly lends credibility to the idea.
** The second Hetalia Fantasia CD has him similarly choking Denmark when the latter suggests that him trying to get away from Germany and Japan is because he wants to be alone with Denmark. They're definitely verging on VitriolicBestBuds or HoYay at the very least by this point.
-->'''Norway's Profile:''' His hobby is poking at Denmark in a strange way.
** Confirmed as of the Nordic Drama CD, with Finland thinking that they get along very well despite appearances, and Sweden going so far as to agree and compare it to his and Finland's relationship.
--> '''Finland:''' But I don’t think it means that Nor doesn’t like Denmark. Whatever happens, it seems like Nor spends a lot of time with Denmark.

-> ''"It'd be great if there was stuff like mythical phantom residents that live only in Iceland..."''

->Voiced by: Ayumu Asakura (JP), Creator/JasonLiebrecht (EN)

A mysterious boy with a cool exterior and a hot interior. He tries to act mature, but he still has an immature side. He is cleverly turning the hot water that is found in his country into spas to attract more tourists.

[[hardline]]
* BaitAndSwitch: "What? Where you expecting something?"
* [[BrattyTeenageDaughter Bratty Teenage Boy]]: His immature side is a mild version of this.
* BrickJoke: In the opening of TheMovie, Iceland wonders aloud how he can get more tourists to go to his place. [[spoiler:And at the end, during TheStinger, it turns out he got some of the aliens to stay (somehow) and was using them to attract tourists.]]
* CantCatchUp: In a way; it's stated in "Meeting of The Nordic" that he's always one step behind the other Nordics - and maybe the rest of Europe - in terms of European trends.
** He also laments the fact that no matter how much older he gets, the age gap between him and the other Nordics will never shrink.
* ContemplateOurNavels: Spent a lot of time wondering about the nature of his existence as a child. It makes sense, considering there was no other nation around to explain anything to him.
* ADayInTheLimelight: During ''Manga/HetaliaBloodbath2010''.
* ForeignCussWord: In TheMovie his first line was "Oh skít."
* FriendlessBackground: ''World☆Stars'' reveals him to have been alone from the moment he was born, with only vague sensations of an "older brother" to keep him company.
-->'''Young Iceland:''' I feel like I had a brother, but maybe it's my own delusion.
* HeightAngst: One particular instance:
-->'''Iceland:''' OK. I won't get any taller than this. [[BlatantLies This is fine.]]
* HomoeroticDream: Iceland [[http://www.hetarchive.net/scanlations/xmas2011/2011_12_re2.php once had a dream]] where he was flying through the air with Turkey while the latter was only wearing boxer shorts, his mask, and a Santa hat. His reaction when he woke up:
-->"Am I completely mental to be dreaming dreams like this?"
* HormoneAddledTeenager: In the 2010 Christmas Bloodbath he gets distracted by [[TheBigGuy Germany]]'s muscles.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: He's adamant about this, to the point where he pretends he can't see Norway's magical creatures and tells his Puffin not to speak when others are around.
-->'''Iceland:''' If I were speaking to a bird, they're gonna think I'm pitiful.
* ImplausibleDeniability: He's ''not'' lonely. Really, he's not. Even when Mr. Puffin and the other Nordics can clearly see that the opposite is true.
* InterGenerationalFriendship: Sorta, with Turkey in the Hetalia Bloodbath 2010. It helps that Iceland is already a teenager, not a child.
** The Bloodbath has him more or less cool, but still worrying for his fellow Nordics and keeping up with Turkey.
* MessyHair: It's described as being "tousled" or "bedheaded."
* MysticalWhiteHair: Icelandic people are stereotyped to be fair haired and superstitious.
* NiceShoes: His trademark white boots.
* NonActionGuy: In ''Hetalia Fantasia'', at least. He says that Denmark took care of any monsters they came across, and ends up calling to Denmark and Norway for help. When even ''Italy'' attacks the monster, you can tell he's this.
* NonHumanSidekick: He's often shown with a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puffin Puffin]] bird.
** PollyWantsAMicrophone: Said bird tends to talk a lot and is also really bad mouthed.
*** AccessoryWearingCartoonAnimal: His bowtie.
*** CuteButCacophonic: Especially evident in his attempts at hijacking ''With Love, From Iceland''.
*** FormallyNamedPet
*** HeadPet: Mr. Puffin's usual perch.
* NotSoDifferent: Played with in the ''Manga/HetaliaHetaween2013'' event, with ''Romano'' of all people. At first they find common ground complaining about their "thickheaded" and "meddlesome" guardians, but while Iceland admits ultimately that he doesn't mind it so much, Romano snaps back that he doesn't like it at all.
* OhCrap: In ''Hetaween 2013,'' France posits that he and Iceland get together sometime for "poetry." [[http://hetarchive.net/scanlations/2013hal/2013hal_3.php Iceland makes his revulsion clear.]]
* OnlySaneMan: Thinks of himself as this in comparison to the rest of the Nordics, though it's often belied by his slightly bratty nature. In practice, he often just ends up being a grumpy killjoy.
* SempaiKohai: When Sealand learns that Iceland also auctions himself on eBay, he proclaims that they should be friends because of their being in "similar circumstances," and that Iceland should call him his superior. Iceland doesn't understand what he means.
* SpitTake: When Denmark exclaimed about seeing flying cows. And all over Mr. Puffin too.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He's described as being [[EmotionlessBoy cold]] on the outside, but warmer and [[HotBlooded "hot-blooded"]] on the inside. The Nordic strips show him as being cool in the beginning and somewhat losing it by the end.
** It may allude to his land's topography as a very cold island... but it's made of ''volcanoes.''
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He's seen eating [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salty_liquorice salty licorice]] in the "Making a Good Product in Northern Europe" strip.
* {{Tsundere}}: Shows hints of being a Type A with his constant denial that he enjoys the company of the other Nordics.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Seems to be type 2 with his Puffin according to Hetalia Fantasia and his character song.
* WhenHeSmiles: At the end of the ''Hetaween 2013'' event when admitting that he doesn't mind the attention the other Nordics give him. ''[[http://hetarchive.net/scanlations/2013hal/2013hal_7.php And it is adorable.]]''

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kieee.jpg]]
* AdaptationDyeJob:
* AffectionateNickname:
--->'''Sweden:''' I'll do the manufacturing...
--->'''Norway:''' Then I'll dance.
--->'''Finland:''' You're going to dance?!

-->'''Denmark:''' ...Cant'cha make it a little softer?!

* {{BFS}}: His WeaponOfChoice is a two-hands sword.
* {{Emoticon}}: 回言回

* CheshireCatGrin: In Finland's flashback.
* SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud: In Hetalia Fantasia.

* {{Emoticon}}: 廿_廿†

* ADayInTheLimelight: During ''Manga/HetaliaBloodbath2010''.
* HeightAngst: One particular instance:

* AdaptationDyeJob:
** Iceland has PurpleEyes in the manga, but recieved blue eyes in ''World Series'', though he also initially had them in the earliest manga illustrations.
* AffectionateNickname:
--->'''Sweden:''' I'll do the manufacturing...
--->'''Norway:''' Then I'll dance.
--->'''Finland:''' You're going to dance?!
* PurpleEyes: Iceland, alluding to the Icelandic culture being akin to the belief of nature spirits and the atmosphere of the Northern Lights. Finland as well, connecting to him being Santa.

->Voiced by: Creator/TakahiroMizushima (JP), Creator/ClintBickham (EN)

-->'''Denmark:''' ...Cant'cha make it a little softer?!

-> '''Nd m'wif.''

->Voiced by: Creator/KeikouSakai (JP), Creator/RobertMcCollum (EN)

* {{BFS}}: His WeaponOfChoice is a two-hands sword.
* {{Emoticon}}: 回言回

* CheshireCatGrin: In Finland's flashback.
* SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud: In Hetalia Fantasia.

Although some art has them look [[PurpleEyes purplish.]]
* {{Emoticon}}: 廿_廿†
* {{Kuudere}}: While he's generally cold on the surface, he's ''much'' sweeter when doting on Iceland. He has also shown a softer side to Denmark on occasion.
* [[HairDecorations This Guy Uses Hair Decs]]: Wears a cross-shaped hairclip. It's also some sort of troll communication device, much to Finland's confusion.
