* AesopCollateralDamage: The castle staff, tranformed into objects until their prince learns his lesson and if he fails, it dooms them as well. The Broadway version alters the back-story to show that the staff was also cursed because they had a role in letting prince become a spoiled brat in the first place, however it still doesn't justify turning a seven year old into a teacup.

The Broadway version alters the back-story to show that the staff was also cursed because they had a role in letting prince become a spoiled brat in the first place, however it still doesn't justify turning a seven year old into a teacup. Considering the original fairytale was written in 1740, this isn't as strange as it seems to a modern audience: the King or Prince effectively is the kingdom and the royal staff are bound to him. The sovereignty of the citizen is a very republican idea.

Broken Aesop is now YMMV

* BrokenAesop: The film's aesop "Don't be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within" is undermined by Monsieur D'Arque, the asylum master. The film's LoveInterest and BigBad--the Beast and Gaston, respectively--effectively deconstruct tropes commonly associated with their respective antithesis; the Beast looks ObviouslyEvil while Gaston looks like a PrinceCharming, but their personalities sharply contrast with their appearances, especially after Beast is inspired to change his ways by Belle's kindness towards him. However, Monsieur D'Arque takes the ObviouslyEvil trope and plays it completely straight, as he looks like a walking corpse, has red eyes, and loves Gaston's manipulative plot to have Maurice thrown in the asylum unless Belle agrees to marry him, precisely because of how despicable it is.

** Also Gaston's unnamed black horse seen during "The Mob Song" sequence. It has no characterization whatsoever but it's definetly cool-looking.
