* NoConservationOfEnergy: The Steam Balls are metal orbs roughly the size of a basketball that appear to contain an infinite amount of compressed steam, and are light enough that Ray can carry one under his shirt. Three of them working in unison can generate enough force to lift a metal fortress several million times their mass into the air.

Just showcasing the working jetpack at the expo could have gotten them plenty of investors.

* ScienceIsBad: Subverted. The whole point of Lloyd's view is that Science Is ''not'' Bad. It's the ''People'' that are the problem. No matter what wonders science can make, if you put it in the hands of a bunch of Gun merchants who sold weapons to both sides of the American Civil War, nothing good will come out of it.

* ScienceIsBad: Subverted.Starts to slide towards this after Ray is captured by the O'Hara Foundation and is introduced to the Steam Castle. Towards the end of the movie, we finally see what the good elder Steam's original intention for the Steam Castle was. How in the hell does someone get the idea to make a weapon out of a [[spoiler:children's carnival]]!?
** But, ultimately, the trope is subverted.

* FailedASpotCheck: When the British Government approved the O'Hara Foundation's application for the Great Exhibition, they did not do a thorough background check. They were thus unaware that the Foundation had sold weapons to both the United States and Confederacy during the American Civil War (as well as their other international arms sales) until ''after'' the application had already been approved and they'd set up their pavilion. Dryly lampshaded by the Admiral, who admits it's [[{{Understatement}} a lamentable oversight and rather embarrassing]].

pretty sure TVT has this rule of not posting subjective opinions in "Main"-space pages. like, that's what the Reviews and YMMV pages are for.

* TwoDVisualsThreeDEffects: The film relies heavily on digital animation for vehicles, matte paintings, and complex action sequences. While it has aged fairly gracefully, it is still much more obvious than CG machines in modern anime.

* NoPlansNoPrototypeNoBackup: While the three Steambolls are valuable, unique [=MacGuffins=] on their own, the Director's Cut expands more on the ''why''. Eddy and Lloyd completely tapped out the pure mineral water from the Icelandic cavern and Lloyd estimated it would take at least a century to replenish. Thus, they were only able to build three Steamballs with the available collected mineral water (and hence why the O'Hara Foundation's so desperate to recover the one Lloyd stole after the prologue).

Having actually seen some of the 3D stuff, it's not that bad. It's just CG.

* TwoDVisualsThreeDEffects: The film relies heavily on digital animation for vehicles, matte paintings, and complex action sequences. Given this was early 2000s-era CGI, it's an element of the film that hasn't aged well the more time passes.
