The third anime series of the Franchise/Digimon franchise, Digimon Tamers was the first installment to set itself in a different canon entirely. It tends to be described as "Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion with mons," or "Anime/SerialExperimentsLain for kids", and for good reason--series head writer Creator/ChiakiKonaka was also the man behind Lain and is reportedly a big fan of Evangelion and Franchise/UltraSeries. Distinguished for edTropeing the Mons genre and being DarkerAndEdgier than every other Digimon canon since (with one possible exception), it is significantly more cerebral, psychological, technologically minded, and becomes one hell of a CosmicHorrorStory by the end. And as a result of all this, it's rather debatable just how appropriate the show is for its "target" demographic, particularly in its last acts.

* ArcWord: "Destiny" is used a lot after (and right before) . It applies to not just Jeri's situation, but Calumon as well as he realizes his true nature.

** "Destiny" was an Arc Word for Jeri. As in episode 35, he told Jeri it was probably his destiny. In the American dub, however, he said to her that , and that she had "a lion's heart". Yet the dub still had Jeri say, when she referenced the scene five episodes later, that had called "destiny."

** Also, Antylamon the Rabbit Deva. In the episode where he/she first appeared, [[spoiler:she played with Henry's kid sister, Suzie. Heck, she even defended her from Makuramon, the Monkey Deva. As a result, Antylamon was stripped of a large portion of her power and dedigivolved to Lopmon, and Suzie was made her Tamer.

** An accidental and rather serendipitous example. In an early episode, Guilmon unwittingly draws a Star of David with Calumon on the school's soccer field (which was originally a pentacle; goodness only knows why the Star of David was chosen as a replacement). His English voice actor is Jewish.

* SpoilerOpening: Everyone's evolutions are previewed—Gallantmon, [=MegaGargomon=], Sakuyamon and Beelzemon (even worse, Blast Mode) all appear in the opening of the very first episode, but they're obscured by shadows until the start of the Digital World arc at which point, all bets were off.
