Vanilla Protagonist is a YMMV trope.

* VanillaProtagonist: In terms of both personality and musical style, the titular duo are by far the plainest of the many musicians seen in the show. It even gets lampshaded, with one of the Mars' Brightest judges remarking that their lack of a gimmick (save for being acoustic do-it-yourself musicians in an era of AI composers) is a gimmick in its own right.

** Downplayed at the ''Mars Brightest'' finale. [[spoiler:After arriving late due to Valerie's interference, Carole and Tuesday are officially disqualified, leaving Angela as the victor, but are allowed to perform their song anyway. Their performance of "Loneliest Girl" moves the judges to tears, but they remain firm about the disqualification and declare Angela the victor. However, the judges refuse to let such a talented duo leave empty-handed, disqualification or not, and offer them a record deal on the spot.

* SurprisinglyGoodEnglish: For the Japanese original dub, all of the songs are performed in English by native speakers. The English dub left it alone since it was that good.

* LyricalDissonance: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFjqEexH0Tg Galactic Mermaid]]", the infamous song that the Mermaid Sisters sing for Mars Brightest, is a catchy a capella number with lyrics that are ''exclusively'' swear words. The amount of foul language used in the 40-second song was enough to bump the show's rating up to a TV-MA.

* LivingProp: The backup music trio that Carole and Tuesday found when Carole was conveniently talking about looking for musicians to add rhythmic sections to her music. After their rather small introduction, they don't get any lines, but they happily assist the girls with what they need and appear at every major song performance.

** Carole was left at an orphanage since she was a baby and later ended up at a refugee camp before ending up in Mars. She actually doesn't have a single shred of sadness for never knowing her parents. [[spoiler:That is, until her father Dann shows up and tells her that she had to be left at the orphanage due to her mother's DeathByChildbirth, which wasn't helped when Dann was arrested for a CrimeInSelfDefense that he was wrongly accused to and had to be in prison for 18 years. Though initially dismissive of her parental connection, Carole comes to appreciate the fact her father will come back one day.]]
