Seth: Bang, Bang, BANG?

Looney Toons: Maybe, but it's talking more about the fact that TV and movie guns let you know that they're mechanical with every little motion. They always ratchet or click or something. Probably could be merged, though.

Mister Six: Well they're two very different tropes springing from a common source (overzealous sound engineers). I don't think you could comfortably merge them without completely rewriting Bang, Bang, BANG to be about OTT sound FX in general.

Citizen: I felt the film example was a little discussion-y and longer than it needed to be, so I'm trimming it down and moving the original discussion here:
Hollywood tends to add the Hammer Cocking sound to all pistols, even GLOCKs, which don't have an external hammer to cock in the first place.
Or 1911s, even worse an offender as they are single action. Short version: an uncocked 1911 either has no round in the chamber (and cocking won't load one), or the owner dropped the hammer on a loaded round to make it "safer" - an extremely dangerous operation at best. Whichever the case, 1911s are meant to be carried with a round in the chamber, hammer in firing position (that is to say, back), and safety on. (This is why they have a grip safety, by the way.) And, "racking the slide" (pulling the slide backwards and then letting it go) not only loads the first round from the magazine but also cocks the hammer. So any character cocking a 1911, rather than showing menace, automatically demonstrates unfamiliarity with their weapon.
Nerd.
I personally feel that setting the hammer down on a chambered 1911 is perfectly fine, and I know at least one guy who carries that way. I can't think of anyone I know who's ever had a 1911 misfire either, though I can't say with absolute certainty that there isn't a model out there which can misfire if the hammer gets hit. Just that mine doesn't. Adding cocking sounds to Glocks ought to be a crime.

Anonymous Mc Cartneyfan: This trope only applies to Shur Fine Guns, and so this should be listed as part of that.

Nasrudith: Does this really deserve deletion? It's a decent trope just in need of a clean up and some more examples. Perhaps including a few more examples of Video Games that use this.

J Chance: Agreed, keep. I know I've heard clicky guns in a lot of anime—I believe Gundam Wing does it every time Heero or anyone else aims a pistol, for one thing...
