YMMV / Steven Universe S5E21 "The Question"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Is Greg really not that bothered by Rose being Pink Diamond, or is he, like Steven, bottling up his emotions and comforting the others at his own expense?
    • With a certain fan theory in mind, did Greg actually know Rose was Pink before the reveal and lied about it to not throw anything else on Steven and the Gems, or was he just as in the dark as the rest of them?
  • Angst? What Angst?: Greg learns that Rose Quartz, his lover, was really Pink Diamond, and that she lied to everyone about her true identity. This creates a lot of questions regarding consent in their relationship, since Rose as she put it was "not a real person". However, Greg has mentioned that Rose felt that she had to tell him everything about her past, but he insisted that he didn't care about who she used to be, only the person she was now.

  • Author's Saving Throw: For Garnet. Ever since "Hit the Diamond", many fans noted how unhealthy it was that Ruby and Sapphire really couldn't spend a minute apart without getting separation anxiety. Ruby notes how in her whole existence she's never really had any time by herself; she thoroughly enjoys it, and Steven helps her realize that her desire for independence and her wanting to be with Sapphire aren't mutually exclusive. By the episode's end it's implied that from now on she'll want to spend more time by herself, and she excitedly tells Sapphire that being married will mean they're always together — even when they physically aren't.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Greg's reaction to the reveal about Rose/Pink Diamond is tossed off in a single line where he quite unbelievably marks up his not using his birth name during their relationship as equivalent to hiding being one of the leaders of the Gem Empire. On the other hand, this is the same guy who compared starting an intergalactic war to thinking disco was coming back.

    • It also would have been nice to check in with Peridot, since both she and Ruby were abandoned by someone close to them for reasons they weren't to blame for. And come to think of it, Peridot hasn't found out about Pink Diamond yet...
  • Uncanny Valley: Amethyst as a horse looks incredibly off, since it's the most realistic transformation she's made yet. Her growing a snout before fully shapeshifting just adds onto it.
