Harry and the Shipgirls is a Harry Potter/KanColle crossover fanfic written by Harry Leferts.

Decades before the start of the story, the first Abyssals came and attacked, and the event was covered up by wizards to keep magic hidden from the muggles. And then more Abyssals came and those too were covered up. Then more and more came in greater numbers over the decades, stretching the wizards thin trying to maintain the Statute of Secrecy, and then the Dark Lord Voldemort openly started what would be later known as the First Wizarding War, forcing the wizards to concentrate all their efforts inwards. By the time the Dark Lord was defeated and the wizards had a first look at the muggle world in a while, the Abyssal attacks escalated into the Total War, and in response the muggles summoned the Shipgirls to battle the abyssal menace. Judging the situation unsalvageable, the magical governments decided to double down on hiding from muggles and hope for the War to blow over, while trying to cover up magical beings that were coming out of the woodwork due to the war thinning the barrier between the material and the spiritual, while many others took advantage of all of this to act more overtly.

Then one day, IJN Battleship Nagato along with others were attending a social dinner at the Dursleys', owners of a company that supplies materials to the Navy, where they found a malnourished seven-year old boy locked in the cupboard. With the Dursleys arrested for ration fraud, Nagato took upon herself to raise Harry Potter.

• Actually Pretty Funny: A plan to uncover the location Ancient Atlantic Gateway Princess's court resulted in her sending a series of images to the British Ministry of Intelligence of her holding signs explaining that she has been playing the game of Intrigue since before most of their analysts were born. The final image? Porta, in a pair of sunglasses, with a black baseball cap backwards on her head, Flipping the Bird with both hands, while her forearms held up one last sign saying "GIT GUD SCRUBS". The Director of Intelligence gave the only proper response to that last one: A great big belly laugh.
  "Well played, Madam! Well played!"
• Adaptational Attractiveness: The merfolk in the Black Lake are going to be given more of a classic mermaid appearance, rather than the designs that Rowling used.
• Adaptational Badass: Gilderoy Lockhart. In canon, he was a Miles Gloriosus who was hopeless with anything other than memory charms. Here, he summoned the shipgirl of HMS Royal Sovereign years before the beginning of the story. She helped him shape up and become the man he was proclaiming himself to be, a competent adventurer who can hold his own in a fight.
• Adaptational Early Appearance: The Room of Requirement, which canonically made its debut in Harry's Fifth Year, appears in his First Year, due to Myrtle suggesting it as a place where he can make Valentine's chocolates for his friends.
• Adaptational Explanation: In canon, there is no explanation given for the Chinese Fireball, in spite of being from China, is a Western Dragon as opposed to an Eastern Dragon, aside from the obvious answer that Rowling didn't research the topic. Here, it's explained that Su Daji, hearing about a great empire in the West, made a journey to the Roman Empire. While she found Rome to be little more than a fading husk of its former glory, she did find some dragons that she took to China, as besides their parts being valuable potion reagents, their compact size and ability to be trained also made them good guards.
• Adaptational Intelligence: Two prominent examples are Gilderoy Lockhart and Vincent Crabbe.
  • Lockhart: In canon, the spell he tried to use to heal Harry's arm after the bludger broke it was essentially fake. Here, it was a real spell that was used to Vanish small shards of bone when medical treatment was too far away to prevent the shards from tearing apart the muscles around the break. Too bad that the bones in Harry's arm were shattered into nothing but shards...
  • Crabbe: In canon, he was little more than some of the Dumb Muscle Draco Malfoy kept around to do his dirty work. Here, while he still plays the part, he has a very sharp mind, able to put together solid theories based on little pieces of evidence and consistently Do Well, But Not Perfect in all of his classes, passing with ease but not attracting attention.
• Adults Are Useless:
  • Largely averted. The adults in this series are all very competent and willing to help when necessary.
  • Played horrifyingly straight, however, with the Izu refugees. When Eric's arm got injured, Sora's and Samantha's fairies could have healed it, but because the adults had no knowledge at all about shipgirls, they wouldn't allow them to. And when their attempt at a rescue beacon only resulted in an Abyssal Princess finding them, the adults in the group all went past the Despair Event Horizon.
• Age-Gap Romance: While both being Kitsune changes things a little, Natsumi's mum (and Haru's sister) Sakuya was 60 when she started dating her dad Kensuke, who was 15.
• All Amazons Want Hercules:
  • Takao certainly seems to be a case of this trope.
  • Also, female oni love nothing more than seeing a man who shows his strength, physical or mental.
• All Deaths Final: In order to avert Death Is Cheap, the authors have mandated that any shipgirls who sink will not be able to be resummoned for a period of around seventy years. Natural-borns who never fully awakened have a bit more wiggle-room though.
• All-Loving Hero: Doctor Norihara, a minor character whose adherence to her moral code is so strong that she is able to cause an Abyssal to switch sides.
• All Myths Are True: The pantheons of gods who exist in mythology, fantastic monsters, and heroic figures of legend? They all exist here.
• Alternate Universe Fic: In this universe, something caused a whole generation of wizards and witches to be born a whole generation later, with James and Lily Potter graduating Hogwarts in 1997.
• Animate Inanimate Object:
  • Rose the Tea Set that was in possession of the Evans family for over a hundred years, gained awareness as a tsukumogami, and is able to project a human form that looks like a train conductor.
  • Later on more tsukumogami characters appear including the Muramasa and Masamune swords and other weapons that the Potter Family collected.
• Anti-Magic:
  • Shipgirls and the Abyssals are heavily resistant to magic, and those who spend a considerable amount of time near them tend to become so as well, most notably to the Obliviators' mind wipes.
  • Estelle, the spirit of a specially crafted magical dagger designed as a counter to magic, takes this up to eleven with her ability to No-Sell a Killing Curse.
  • Kenshō is able to make recent magic spells outright forget that they have even been cast.
• Artist Disillusionment: In-Universe. Naka was a natural-born who simply couldn't get into the Idol business, no matter how hard she tried. Then she Awakened as a shipgirl and suddenly, all of those executives who had scorned her before now came back begging. Naka was not amused (to the point of "accidentally" dropping a torpedo on their feet). Now, she runs a Livestream (with young Harry as a frequent co-host) and plans to rebuild the whole idol business, once the War is over.
• Asian Fox Spirit:
  • The four-tailed kitsune Haru, who poses as a Miko taking care of a shrine dedicated to the departed sailors, but in reality guards Yokosuka Base from the supernatural. Her niece Natsumi is a one-tail and is Harry's pre-Hogwarts classmate. Later we meet Natsumi's parents and their friends Hoshi and Tsuki, the daughters of Tamamo-no-Mae.
  • Also there are Chinese huli jing fox spirits in Mei Yuying, Wei Ying, and Su Daji in several sidestories.
• Babies Ever After: Snippets set in the future have shown the children of Harry Potter, Claire du Chasteler, and Draco Malfoy with their loved ones after their wedding. All three of the named have large families in the future, and some of their children have been fleshed out such as Taube du Chasteler-Malfoy, Therese du Chasteler-Potter, and Minato Potter acquiring his girlfriends.
• Badass Army: Ocean Liner Demon's Dämonentruppen, or Demon Troopers. As a manifestation of merchant ships caught up in War - specifically Ocean Liners that were often used as troop transports - the Demon has a full legion of Hell's version of Imperial German Stormtroopers crossed with the fanon version of the Death Korps of Krieg.
• Badass Boast:
  • The collected lines from an omake, shouted out as Kaylee charged an Eldritch Abomination in a wooden dory with nothing but a few dozen revolvers. ^note "You want a fight, you termite-infested blue-belly?! Now you've got one, you up-gunned Damn-Yankee Garbage Scow! You've bought the whole fuckin' packet! I'm Kaylee Virginia McAmis, daughter of Eric and Crystal McAmis, granddaughter of James Aubrey Wilson McAmis and George Cecil Malone, and you ain't killin' me or mine, not today or any day! You hear me?! So come on, Kearsarge! Gimme your best shot! You wouldn't make a crotch-cricket in Alabama's petticoat, you hear me!?! WHOOO-EEEE! I'm a snappin' snarlin' she-wolf from outta the Tennessee Hills! Run, ya cow'rd if ya can!"
  • Later on done by the Natural-Born shipgirl Mika de Breuil/Lakotah (a Montana-class Battleship built to fight on the magical side of World War II) when she Awakens as a dozen Abyssals including two Ru-class battleships attack the fishing trawler that she's working on. ^note Lakotah shifted minutely, shielding the frail humans under her care with her own body as she turned broadside to the steel rain coming her way in a silent statement of challenge thrown into the teeth of the Abyss. "If you want them, you will have to go through me first!"
• Balkanize Me:
  • Magical Japan's state. In the years following the Blood Week and the decapitation of the Tokyo Magical Diet, most of Magical Japan became decentralized as a matter of practical survival, and even if no-one actually seceded, many places have become de-facto mini-nations within the nation. And then Magical Kyoto, tired of Tokyo's continuous failure to deal with the on-going crisis, declared that they are re-organizing the magical government of Japan around themselves.
  • China as a whole has been divided into multiple territories as a direct result of Blood Week and the Abyssal threat.
• Because You Were Nice to Me: A captured Ta-Class battleship bonds with her doctor after she suffers an emotional breakdown trying to understand the doctor’s kindness and altruism.
• Been There, Shaped History: With how long-lived many of the characters are, it would be more surprising if this trope didn't apply.
  • Muramasa-no-Norimune was involved in the Boston Tea Party and then was present for the burning of the White House during the War of 1812.
  • Colombe du Chasteler tried (and failed) to stop Gavrilo Princep from assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which set off the First World War. She was even blamed for assisting Princep on the magical side of things for over a decade. Also she fought against Napoleon during his first major defeat in the Battle of Leipzig during 1813.
  • Delilah de Breuil was a founding member of the Boone and Crockett Club and helped persuade Theodore Roosevelt to accept the vice presidential nomination that resulted in him becoming president. She later worked with Roosevelt to help found the National Park Service, in part to protect magical places of power in North America.
  • Schild Gottes fought in the trenches alongside Adolf Hitler and would later save his life from a gas attack.
  • The tsukumogami of Excalibur and her sheath, Avalon, inspire Nasu to write Fate/stay night.
  • A battle between the Abyssal Elder Princesses was what caused Mount Krakatoa to erupt.
• Bequeathed Power: At the end of their Talking in Your Dreams moment, Lily transfers her shipgirl powers to Nagato.
• Beware the Nice Ones:
  • Regina the Re-Class battleship is noted as being effectively Abyssal!Shinano, meaning most of the time she’s a sweet gal. She outdoes her Genki Girl counterpart Revina in sheer brutality and violence in combat however, literally tearing foes apart with her bare hands.
  • Hoppou, AKA the Northern Ocean Princess. She has the body of a child and is incredibly sweet... almost makes you forget she is the personification of a naval base, who can go hand-to-hand with a Gashadokuro and created multiple Princesses and Demons.
  • Masamune-no-Tokunotakai is a kind, sweet, and humble shrine maiden, who is also the First Blade of Hachiman and to date has wrecked an extremely powerful onryo ghost and a Mokèlé-mbèmbé without breaking a sweat.
  • Toku's western counterpart is Cathy, the saintly spirit of the Sword of Joan of Arc whose kill count of Dementors reached three digits in one encounter.
  • For most of the time she's on screen, you could be forgiven for forgetting that Summer is an Abyssal Installation Princess with all the power and capability that implies since she normally acts like giant moe blob. Brigid certainly did up until Summer picked her up out of her wheelchair and promised she'd scrap the other Princess an inch at a time if she tried her threats against Ron.
• Beware the Silly Ones:
  • British submarines (AKA the KNIGHTS OF THE UNDERSEA) spend the vast majority of their time in the story chewing the scenery, being goofy and in general making themselves impossible to ignore... but when they get serious, their ability to disappear is unparalleled.
  • Revina, a Re-Class Abyssal Battleship and expy of Pinkie Pie, is absolutely frightening when she is sufficiently provoked.
• Big Badass Battle Sequence: The Battle of Saint Kitts between a multinational shipgirl force led by HMS Duke of York, USS Pennsylvania, U-96, and USS Enterprise and an alliance of Abyssals led by City Consuming Princess, Guinea Gulf Princess, and Middle Passage Princess. Notably it covers all aspects of WWII naval warfare in submarine and antisubmarine warfare, carrier duels, and battleship slugging matches. ^note  The actual capital ship lineup was 24 carrier shipgirls, 22 battleship shipgirls, and 6 battlecruiser shipgirls referenced or shown on-screen. The Abyssal carrier force was 57 fleet and light carriers under command of Middle Passage Princess.
• Big Bad Wannabe: Kuroshi the jorogumo, a yokai who eats other yokai to steal their magic and has been pursuing Shiromizu in order to consume her divinity as a Mizuchi. Though she is one of the more challenging fights and provides something of a minor Wham Episode, she is ultimately little more than a Monster of the Week.
• Blue-and-Orange Morality:
  • This is the most charitable thing that can be said about Morrigan of Irish mythology, as she saw a problem, enacted a solution with The Select, and doesn't see anything wrong with what she did. Other Pantheons vehemently disagree with her on this and her own pantheon has been forced to burn favors left and right, not to mention losing Champions to represent them to other pantheons who have cashed in on all the IOUs, because of her.
  • Hostile Abyssals don't see anything wrong with doing things like using human heads as balls.
• Bolt of Divine Retribution:
  • Parodied. An Armored Carrier Princess in the Atlantic Ocean was giving Angband and her fleet some serious trouble. When Angband told her fleet to have faith that they would win for Porta, Armored Carrier Princess dared Porta to strike her down. Meantime, Nagato, having just learned that Harry had been signed up for the Triwizard Tournament, threw a large steel ball that she normally used as a stress ball extremely hard from all the way in Yokosuka Naval Base...
  • Also played straight in a side-story. During Blood Week, the Abyssal 'Ivory Coast Demon' sets her sights on a church on St. Matthews, where a bishop of questionable piety (given the visibly pregnant nun at his side) warns her that God will strike her down if she sets foot on Holy Ground. A Ta-class scoffs at the idea, puts it to the test - and is promptly vapourised right out of her rigging by a classic bolt of divine wrath. The Demon herself is outraged at this, attempts to get her hands on the (equally-astonished) bishop 'responsible', and also gets the good news, but rather than a swift death via lightning, Big G decides that this smiting 'only' leaves her lamed by a bone-infection in her leg. Which never heals. Ten years later, Ivory Coast is still crippled by this injury, and has to drain her leg-sores of wastes so vile that the stench induces nausea in people two rooms away.
• Brass Balls: Without knowing who Oda Kotegiri was, Captain Itami of the JGSDF instinctively corrected her about the rank of Commander Tsubaki Doji. After finding out who he had mouthed off to, and the significance of the Oda kimono that she was wearing, he told Tsubaki that he still would have done it anyway.
• Brick Joke:
  • During Second Year, Harry uses Polyjuice Potion to transform into Isokaze (as a test to see if it can work if the subject is a shipgirl) and notes that her boobs are really throwing off his center of balance. During Fourth Year, when she's going to turn into him to bluff Barty Crouch Jr. while Harry visits Ginzan, Harry suggests she try transforming into him early on so she's used to the different center of gravity.
  • When we see the past lives of Harry, Natsumi, and Ren, Lianhua, Ren's previous incarnation, was completely oblivious to the innuendo when Daji, Natsumi's previous incarnation, offered a taste of her persimmon. In the present, the Valentine's Day after they were reunited saw Ren give Harry chocolate-covered persimmon bars.
• Broken Bird: Even with its Noble Bright settings, there are still people who have suffered.
  • Tatsuya Haneda, a Badass Normal who has been fighting an endless series of battles against supernatural foes since he was nine years old. By the time Harry interacts with him, he is distrustful of magic users outside of a small circle and so worn down that he might not be entirely stable.
  • Renita, Hoppou’s only Re-class daughter, lost control of her inner demon years ago and fled her home to protect her family from her uncontrollable rage. She was found by her family in a near-death state, and even after being healed suffers from severe depression and PTSD.
  • Kaylee McAmis, the Natural Born CSS Viginia, was drugged and raped when she was eight, suffers from severe depression and is borderline suicidal because of it. She also knows it, self medicates, and is too proud to seek help despite knowing that she needs it.
• Broken Masquerade:
  • At the start of the story, not quite yet, but it had been definitely getting there, especially with how the memory-altering spells normally used to enforce it are useless on shipgirls and anyone who spends enough time around one, and how the war is causing the ICW to need to pull manpower from the departments keeping things secret. By the end of the second year the non-magical governments are informed and advised by concerned magical parties to prepare for the inevitable collapse of the Statute.
  • During March 2015 (Harry's Fourth Year in Hogwarts), the masquerade finally collapses when a major magical incident is far too large and too viral to be covered up, being the Canadian armed forces (both magical and non-magical) fighting Gougou in the city of Bathurst, Canada. This leads to the non-magical governments 'in the know' to publicly inform their citizens that magic is real and lay out steps being taken to openly integrate magical and non-magical populations. Notable among the leaders of state speaking in the aftermath of the Battle of Bathurst are the Emperor of Japan, Queen Elizabeth II, and the President of the United States.
• Brown Note: The Shoggoth language, as expected of eldritch beings. When Brigita tells a group of people her True Name, all of them develop spontaneous nosebleeds, and the narration includes numbers and symbols in the thought process of an observer who is out of earshot.
• Bullying a Dragon:
  • An Aka Manto attempted to pull its usual trade on Hibiki. When Akatsuki checked the inside of the toilet stall afterwards, the aftermath of the beatdown left her rather grossed out.
  • The Boogeyman, who had previously expressed an interest in eating Harry while he was staying with the Dursleys, thought it might be able to eat Harry's sister. Hoppou ate the Boogeyman instead.
  • A perverted man who was clearly thinking with the wrong head wanted to try kidnapping Hoppou and Seiko, two Abyssal Princesses, and raping them until he left them mind broken. He thought, since they were humanity's allies, they wouldn't harm him while he had his way with them. Hoppou made it quite clear that he had made a mistake.
    Grabbing Hoppou and Rei with one hand, and Asuka and Seiko with the other, he pulled them into the van and slammed the door shut even as a nearby officer noticed and began running from the other side of the park. Moments later, Hoppou's voice drifted from the van, "Hoppou doesn't like meanies who want to hurt children." ^note While whatever Hoppou actually did has been left to the imagination, let's just say the man had to spend quite a period of time in the hospital before anyone could even think of moving him to prison.
• Cast from Lifespan: Grateful to the shipgirls for saving his grandson, an elderly wizard later revealed to be the former headmaster of Mahoutokoro secretly conducts a summoning ritual using his own life as payment, to summon shipgirls whose ship-selves had only ever existed on paper, such as the planned sister-ships to Shimakaze and Ooyodo, and the USS Montana. He later used the last of his life summoning Louisiana.
• The Chosen One: Brutally deconstructed with the Select, whose ancestors were forcibly tasked by Morrigan of Irish mythology to combat supernatural threats after the Statute of Secrecy was enacted due to the magical world no longer doing so. The ones who show up are all emotional wrecks to some degree or another, or are borderline sociopaths, if not outright sociopaths due to the emotional toll this constant shadow war has taken on them.
• Clap Your Hands If You Believe: Harry has a knack for summoning shipgirls in the hour of need.
• Cloudcuckoolander: Amaterasu, one of Shinto’s most significant Kami, has spent pretty much all of her time in the story goofing off in the guise of a white dog named Sunny (or as the readers call her, good doG).
• Clueless Chick-Magnet: Harry is this, somewhat. Due to a combination of him being charming and adorable, he has managed to attract the attention of at least three women, with several others on the side. Being a kid and all, he's oblivious to all of this, though there are signs he's catching on...
• Cool and Unusual Punishment: As payback for deliberately bailing on Nagato and forcing her to give the Talk to Harry alone, Goto, Richardson and Yonehara are confined to a room and given a “refresher” course on sexual education in the form of a powerpoint presentation... typed entirely in Comic Sans, using old HTML clip art illustrations, and presented by Kongou and Mikasa.
• Cool Big Sis: Prinz Eugen to Hanna aka Lutzow.
• Cool Car: Kiba owns a collection of these, mainly to sell them in case of money emergency. With magic he can restore and maintain what others would have written off, and with Youkai longevity he plays a long game of buying them fresh of the factory and then selling them decades later as vastly more valued classics. The majority of the collection was sold off after the start of Abyssal War to fund various JNHRM projects.
• Covert Pervert: Hogwarts' Nurse Madam Pomfrey has a collection of Bodice Rippers in the Hospital Wing's small library that HMS Upholder makes use of during her guard duty over Hermione, the victim of both Basilisk Petrification and Upholder's own Single-Target Sexuality.
• Crossover: While neither of them are prominently featured, Zombie Land Saga and Black Lagoon are both canon to the setting of Harry and the Shipgirls.
• Curb-Stomp Battle: After a horde of Dementors was repelled, Tsukiakari monitored their flight path, used Harry's Time Turner, and let Cathy^note The spirit of the Sword of Saint Catherine know about the situation before bringing her in their path. Cathy not only slaughtered most of the Dementors all by herself, but also hurt Azkaban through her link to them.
• Dance of Romance: Several examples at the Yule Ball.
  • First Ron and Jean Bart waltz together. Then Isabella Morandi and Ron burn down the dance floor as a couple to the Spanish Tango from Mask of Zorro. During the same number, Harry and RO-500 tango as a Love Confession between them.
  • After Ehren is tricked by her sister and friends into revealing her true feelings for Draco at the climax of Stahlhexe's rock performance, Draco comes to the conclusion that he will pursue her in turn as the final member of his Fleet. This leads to the final dance of the night for Draco and Ehren set to Air Supply's All Out of Love culminating in The Big Damn Kiss between them.
• Dark Is Not Evil: Allied Abyssals in general. They may be literal monsters, but they would rather seek peace with humanity than try to kill them.
• D-Cup Distress: Shinano does not like her bust size too much, because it reminds her that she started as a battleship before being converted into a carrier.
  • Hamakaze, Urakaze, and Isokaze also are not fond of their displacement, as whenever they try to date someone it leads to a My Eyes Are Up Here moment.
• Death by Adaptation:
  • The Kim Dynasty came to an abrupt end during Blood Week, not by the Abyssals, but by their own hand. Kim Jong-Il, believing South Korea was responsible for the Abyssals, decided to nuke Seoul. The nuke hit Pyongyang instead.
  • Fenrir Grayback's canon fate was left ambiguous. Here, he tried hunting the relatives of shipgirls in order to try to establish dominance. Then he tried hunting Hanna Hipper, the Natural-Born KMS Lutzow, who wasn't fully awoken.
• Decomposite Character: In the source material, Ryuuhou is the rebuild of Taigei. Here, Ryuuhou was able to be summoned separately from Taigei.
• Den of Iniquity: The Eternal U-Boat Party of the German Navy. There is practically no vice that is not catered for; drinking into incoherence, rampant drug use, non stop casual sex, unlicensed gambling. It says a lot that most of the German Navy Shipgirls (and a few outside of it) are regular customers, and it takes being a particularly screwed-up individual to be denied entry.
• Desperately Craves Affection: Most of the submarine girls. The other shipgirls are not exactly friendly with them, due to their history, so subgirls tend to act in an exaggerated manner.
  • Japanese subgirls typically will act lewd.
  • British subgirls will channel BRIAN BLESSED all the time.
  • American subgirls will steal anything not nailed down, and if it is they'll simply steal the nails too.
  • German subgirls are the very image of a Consummate Professional when they're on duty. Off duty, however, they are The Hedonist and go Hard-Drinking Party Girl at what is essentially an endless party.
• Detect Evil: Being familiar with the foul aura of Horcruxes thanks to Riddle's Diary, Shiromizu is able to recognise a similar feeling in the Room Of Requirement and follow it to track down Ravenclaw's Diadem, which of course is also a Horcrux. One she notices it all the more spiritually aware characters catch on too, and think they can use the Diadem to locate the rest.
• Did You Just Romance Cthulhu?:
  • Sirius Black romanced, and impregnated, a Forsaken Island Princess while he was escaping from Azkaban Island.
  • Jackie (while extermely drunk) had a one night stand with Tropical Pirate Princess, who was also boozing it up after the other Elder Princesses stopped her plan to trigger World War Three.
• Disappointed by the Motive: Everyone who learned why Peter Pettigrew sold out the Potters feels this way about his betrayal. Dumbledore mused that while he could have understood the betrayal being due to jealousy or seeking power, cowardice was a truly despicable low.
• Disproportionate Retribution:
  • As per the original version of Medea's myth, Zeus tried to seduce her. Even though Medea refused his advances, Hera still tricked her into burning her children alive, just because Zeus had attempted to seduce her.
  • The Kamo government gets a special mention. When it became obvious that Japan was going to lose World War II, their response was a plan that, had they been allowed to execute it, would have caused the whole world to burn. See Taking You with Me for details.
• Dissonant Serenity: Gellert Grindelwald is a very chilling example, given that he knows full well what awaits him when he dies, accepts it, and points out that even then, he wins due to the fact that he will be remembered, thus gaining a form of immortality in the process, and the fact that he made sure of that.
• Divine Parentage: King Arthur's Great-great-great-grandmother Bethany was the mortal incarnation of the Goddess Sul and is where he got his power from. His relics seem to have inherited his gifts. It's also the reason why Prydwen was able to reserve those Hot Springs for 10 years - she's technically family.
• Dream Spying: Harry, paper-only Shipgirls and Kitsunes in the Yokosuka base had dreams of someone being trapped in the void. Investigating into it led them to finding Louisiana.
• Driven to Suicide:
  • A Re-Class who lost her fleet at Scapa Flow decided to undertake a last "tour" visiting the places where her comrades sank, before going to Scapa Flow again and sink herself. Fortunately for her, her fallen comrades came back to life and then Scapa Flow herself materialized as an Installation to stop her.
  • Also happened to Mika's mother and Delilah's lover Louise Winona after being turned into a Manchurian Agent by TOTEM's Mind Rape. Rather than betray her loves and her oaths, Louise went out on her own terms fighting to save a refugee column during the Great Sasquatch Rebellion of 1892
• Eating the Enemy: Harry and company are at a loss as to what to do with all the meat from the Basilisk. The Dark Magic that permeates it makes it pretty much inedible without a lot of prep work. Then Hoppo takes a bite. It turns out to be Impossibly Delicious Food to Abyssals.
• Enemy Civil War:
  • Most Abyssals barely tolerate each other and often fight each other for slights both real and perceived. The first big one came when many Abyssals took issue with Hoppou's very lenient stance on humans, resulting with two huge fleets nearly annihilating each other.
  • This is implied to have happened the last time they manifested in large numbers. They caused the Bronze Age Collapse, but without a common enemy to serve as a distraction ^note They were hardly a unified force, they devolved into infighting and destroyed themselves.
• Enemy Mine: The one time the Fleet of Fog came knocking, the Shipgirls and Abyssals teamed up in order to defeat them.
• Entertainingly Wrong:
  • The MACUSA government. They believe that when the Statute falls, the end result will be the magical and non-magical worlds going to war against each other. They also believe that once the Abyssals have been defeated, humanity will turn against the Shipgirls due to how unnatural they are.
  • One wizard expresses the belief that once the war is over, they'll be able to convince the shipgirls to abide by the Statute and the non-magicals will forget about them relatively quickly, partially because the non-magicals don't believe in creatures that the wizards know are real, flabbergasting a colleague who knows better.
  • Also City Consuming Princess (believing that Porta and Sores are on the side of the Abyss and supporting her war against humanity) and Middle Passage Princess (believing the carriergirls under Enterprise are near Saint Kitts instead of on her flank like at Midway) are badly mistaken at Saint Kitts with catastrophic results for their alliance.
• "Eureka!" Moment: After the boys and Lockhart have been thrown into the Chamber Of Secrets by Peeves and are dealing with a horde of Inferi, Lockhart prevents Neville from using a fire spell against them on the quite sensible grounds that it will either consume all the available oxygen and suffocate them, or catch some sewer gas and blow them all up. An exasperated Neville moans that they can't keep using Banishing Charms to fling them into walls partly for fear of bringing the roof down on them and partly because broken bones won't slow them down, which gives Lockhart the idea of using the deboning spell from earlier to immobilise them.
  Ron: "Huh...That's actually pretty smart."
• Even Evil Has Standards: Tamamo's weapon spirits all agree that even at her worst, the Thousand-Year Vixen would never have turned someone into a tōdaiki like the Caos did.
• Everybody Knew Already: When Hermione reveals to Ron and Neville that she is a Shipgirl, she is mortified that Ron, Harry and everybody else who spent time with Shipgirls knew that already. By fourth year, all of the other Gryffindor girls in her year have figured out her secret, but they haven't told her in order to spare her feelings.
• Everyone Has Standards: The Eternal U-boat Party might be a Wretched Hive of sin and debauchery, but they do have some standards.
  • Those who are underage are not allowed to drink alcohol. No exceptions.
  • Those like SMS Baden, who are such extreme masochists that they have no concept of Safe, Sane, and Consensual, are outright banned from attending.
• Everyone Is a Suspect: As Naka states, there are simply too many possible suspects during Harry's first Quidditch match who might want to harm him.
• Exact Words:
  • Azkaban is holding to her agreement with Magical Britain to the letter of the agreement she has with them. At the same time, she is also holding them accountable to that agreement to the letter as well, meaning that she is not considering Sirius' acquittal valid. He was placed in her Maximum Security wing, so he is hers to do with as she pleases for the rest of his life, period.
  • The prophecy that King Arthur would return in Britain's darkest hour? It never said anything about him reclaiming the throne. He's essentially Got the Call on Speed Dial, with two known cases of him returning being World War II and the Abyssal War.
  • Colombe's oath to never use a wand again after getting expelled in disgrace from Beauxbatons. She didn't say a word about wandless and non-Western magics.
• Expy: Numerous characters.
  • A handful of the Re-class battleships in the story have ended up being characterized as Abyssal versions of the Mane Six. Most prominent are Revina and Regina, who imitate Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy, respectively.
    • As of the Battle of Saint Kitts, Regina can also be one for Broly. She is normally extremely gentle, but if she is truly angered, she becomes death incarnate to her enemies.
  • USS Taylor looks very much like descriptions of another girl named Taylor, which her sisters are always happy to point out. She does not appreciate the comparison.
  • Characters such as Sky, Old Iron, and Sheo Darren are actually expies of members of Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocity. Naturally, they are shipped with their favorite shipgirls.
  • A Kitsune blacksmith named Kokaji is clearly based on Saber Senji Muramasa. What's more, he's in a polygamous relationship with two other Kitsune based on Rin and Sakura, as well as a Nure-Onna based on Rider Medusa.
  • The name alone makes it blatantly obvious who Commodore Chiaphasas of Porta's fleet is based on.
• Extranormal Institute: Capitalizing on Fenrir Greyback's death and hoping to heal the werewolf children and prepare them for the inevitable collapse of the Statute of Secrecy, Dumbledore with assistance from the Shipgirls is setting up one for them in the Welsh countryside.
• Fantastic Ghetto: A few that are mentioned throughout.
  • The absolute majority of Japan's Youkai and other magical creatures are placed in reservations shortly after Perry dragged Japan out of isolation as the consequence of the Japanese magicals snubbing the ICW, and later again as a part of punitive actions in the aftermath of WW2.
  • Saint Brendan's Isle is where those who played around with the Animagus magic too much and got permanent animal traits for their trouble are sent.
• Fantastic Nature Reserve: Overlaps with Fantastic Ghetto.
• Fire Purifies: The Wizards figured a way to cleanse the corrupted hidden islands that the Abyssals like so much, by supercharging a willing Phoenix's flames of rebirth.
• Forgets to Eat: just one possible side-effect of a shipgirl or Abyssal dispatching their crew’s executive officer for extended periods—they stop paying attention to their body’s minor needs, such as itching, tickling and hunger.
• For Want Of A Nail: Besides driving the magical world even further into hiding, the Abyssal War also leads to:
  • Hermione Awakening as a Shipgirl.
  • Amelia Bones being in a much stronger position, politically, as in these uncertain times having a well-funded force of Aurors is in almost everyone's interest.
  • Related to above, all departments related to enforcing the Statute of Secrecy got additional funding and personnel, including Arthur Weasley's Misuse of Muggle Artifacts.
  • With more money and people to delegate, Arthur has more time to spend with his family, and it also results in:
    • At one point, he takes Ron to a chess tournament in the Muggle world that he wins first prize in, giving his self-esteem a much-needed boost. More importantly, he meets Warspite in another tournament.
    • With better financial situation in the family and more respected Father as a role model, Percy grows up to be a better person.
  • Many things before and in the wake of Basilisk's death led to the much earlier discovery of the Ravenclaw's Diadem, leading to Dumbledore revealing its nature as a Horcrux, and that Harry has one in the scar.
  • Due to the danger of the Abyssals, Steve Irwin never went out on his fatal diving trip.
  • Thanks to Sega buying out the company that made knockoffs of their final console with a built-in screen and adding a battery pack, the Sega Dreamcast wound up actually being pretty popular as it was the perfect way to occupy kids in shelters during Blood Week, allowing them to keep making new consoles afterwards.
  • The timing of the Abyssal War meant that Fire Emblem: Awakening did so poorly that the franchise as a whole died when it bombed.
• The Four Loves: One of the key themes of this fic and setting. Over and over again in different ways, love uplifting, healing, and redeeming characters who are at times flawed and broken is a main theme despite many of the characters having to endure extremely difficult times including some horrific incidents.
  • Storge: Most visibly seen in the families shown such as the Potter-Nagato household, the Malfoys, the du Chastelers, Fubuki's family, and the Muramasa and Masamune clans. Despite sometimes major tensions and differences between relatives and characters in groups, they genuinely care for each other.
    "I do not know for sure. But I think I can say, with confidence if you trust this 'pretty voice,'" Tokunotakai laughed gently, making fun of the hateful insult that had been flung by Shimazu back during World War II, "that you have perhaps found wisdom once again. Perhaps a bit later than I had hoped for your behalf, but you have returned. Just as I returned to the path of wisdom after my own folly and blindness during Meiji as a sadder but wiser sister, it is good to see my sister return to me once more, just a bit later than usual."

    "Yes," Shimazu breathed out, still not quite believing she deserved this unconditional forgiveness. "...so sorry, for being very late."

    "Please, make it up to me then." Toku moved back gently to wink at her sister with a small mischievous smile and teasing tone. "I trust your next visit to share tea and conversation will happen sooner than half a century from today?"

    "Ah..." Tears spilled out and leaked from under her glasses thick frames when Shimazu returned the loving embrace. "Yes. I'm finally back, and I shall visit once more as soon as I am allowed."
  • Philia: Extremely present in the snips, not only in the classic Harry Potter 'Golden Trio' of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, but also between Vincent Crabbe and Draco Malfoy, Claire and Ehren du Chasteler, Scorpius and Taube Malfoy, and many of the school friends and shipgirl squadrons shown on screen.
    Vince leaned in, looked into Ehren's eyes, and squeezed her shoulder as they headed downstairs.

    "Ehren. I'm just glad that you're Ok." Vince took a deep breath and then his voice lowered. "It's... traditional... for us to give thanks and praise to God when we are delivered from the peril caused by our enemies. I know that you don't know the words, so I'll say them for you, my friend."

    Ehren's cleansing tears fell once more when she heard the Hebrew of the Birkat ha-Gomel blessing spoken for her behalf by her Jewish friend walking beside her.

    "Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha-olam, ha-gomel l'chayavim tovot she-g'malani kol tov."

    Ehren whispered in a choked voice. "Thank you. Thank you so much, mein Freund. I'm sorry that I didn't choose to wear your gift to the Yule Ball, Vince." She touched her Mikimoto pearl necklace.

    He shook his head. "It's Ok, Ehren. That's a nice necklace; was it another gift to you then, or a heirloom?"

    She smiled. "A Christmas gift from Stiefmutti Toku. I do love my pearls and it matches my earrings from Draco."

    "Pearls really suit you, Ehren. Elspeth is going to spend the night with you; we'll just spend time together another day." Vince said gently to her.

    Ehren's eyes widened while Draco knocked on the beer barrel that gave access to Hufflepuff House. "But.... I would never...."

    Vince pinned her with his eyes and his resolute voice. "Elspeth and I agreed. We can enjoy each other's company another time when our friend isn't hurting and upset because of that asshole Gryff."

    The keg swung open. "Now, go, Ehren. If you want to make it up to us, score us some Stahlhexe tickets for your next concert, 'kay?".
  • Eros: Philia's deep bonds of friendship and trust very often slide into romance when the relationship between two or more characters matures, especially in the cases of Harry Potter and his Fleet, Ron Weasley and Warspite, Draco Malfoy and Ehren du Chasteler, Claire and Tony, Neville Longbottom and Lily Moon, and many many others.
    All the times where she had forced herself to not act upon her desires and needs and wants and wishes.

    On her love for him.

    Because she had sworn that she would not pursue him....

    Draco took a deep breath once more and blew it out.

    He could feel the sensation of standing at a crossroads in his life that there would be no turning back from in this instant of epiphany.

    Just as he had when he spoke to Cú Chulainn to swear his geas to Lugh.

    Just he had when he accepted the offer of power — and even more importantly responsibility — as the Celtic Champion.

    Then the remembered vision of the Maiden of Spring waiting for him in the Land of Youth with that heartwarming shyly sweet smile of Ehren's on her lips came to him once more.

    The irrevocable choice that he now had to make was no choice after all.​

    His lips twisted in an aristocratic sneer as another quote from Cleo's copy of The Return of the King came to his summoning in this moment of choice.

    Draco spoke it out loud to the room, not caring who overheard him. "Ehren'll be my Éowyn then! Well, you can take your 'For she is a fair maiden, fairest lady of a house of queens. And yet I know not how I should speak of her. When I first looked on her and perceived her unhappiness, it seemed to me that I saw a white flower standing straight and proud, shapely as a lily, and yet knew that it was hard, as if wrought by elf-wrights out of steel.'"

    Draco laughed uproariously when he thought about the Kruppstahl of his cousin's true body then raised the goblet in a toast before continuing from memory.

    '"Or was it, maybe, a frost that had turned its sap to ice, and so it stood, bitter-sweet, still fair to see, but stricken, soon to fall and die?' wangst and suck it, Aragorn. I'll take for mine a girl who's able to punk the Witch-King of Angmar like the little wannabe bitch of a proper villain that he was." He finished with a flourish and a broad grin full of ambition.

    With that Draco tossed back the last of the goblet of ginger ale that he had grabbed before heading to find his fleet and notify them of his choice of Ehren du Chasteler to be the final piece of the puzzle of his life.
  • Agape: Also extremely present, notably visible in the final concert of Claire and Tony, Ehren's relationship with Draco (and her father), Taube's friendship with Scorpius, and Harry with regards to his Fleet. Special note should be given here of Father Jacques demonstrating such as he mentors and cares for the du Chasteler family.
    Taube finally spoke with quiet resolution. "According to Bastian's analysis, the death of Cedric Diggory in their timeline was a key point. Without his death as a martyr to rally around for inspiration, the opposition to Voldemort will never crystallize until far later and with worse results. As it was, things apparently stood on the edge of a knife for Harry Potter and the rest then. And while I have the means to hopefully heal his mother Astoria Malfoy of her Blood Curse by drawing it out and absorbing it before it kills her, that would leave her in a world where Voldemort won unless steps are taken to prevent that. I will never let that happen to my family. Never."

    Taiyang placed a clawed finger under Taube's chin as the rush of words trailed off. "A Thanatos Gambit?" She said after probing the younger spirit's thoughts.

    Taube nodded in response to the question.

    Taube then swallowed several times before whispering. "Here's where you stop me, isn't it, sensei?"

    Taiyang turned to look at the monument. "No."

    The Dao spoke thoughtfully as she looked at the centaur. "Human sacrifice is considered among the darkest and most powerful forms of magic. Destroying a sentient being's potential, promise, and very future to empower yourself is black indeed and stains the soul forevermore. That's how our version of Voldemort created his Horcruxes. But...."

    A ball of ebony foxfire flickered into existence above a clawed palm and shifted from dark fire to purest silver light. "A sacrifice willingly given out of love and faith and compassion is equally great and powerful in its own ways. Even, or perhaps especially, when it is unmarked and unremembered by history and those whom it will touch."

    Taube stood and hugged her teacher. "Thank you." Her lips quirked in a small smug smile. "I always did love my Dickens, after all."
• Fun with Acronyms:
  • The Kyoto Ministry had fun naming the exams for students while Mahoutokoro was under Abyssal occupation. The year-end exams for students were called the Intentionally Selective Elective and Knowledge Aptitude Initiative, or I.S.E.K.A.I., while the aptitude tests at the end of the seventh year were called the Selected Elective Initiation of Nasty Exam Notoriety, or S.E.I.N.E.N..
  • A future peacekeeping force is called Joint Extrasolar Detective Investigation, or JEDI.
  • Another future organization that is set up to police the use of Temporal Magic and repair damage to the timelines is the Temporal Archiving, Reconstruction, Deparadoxing, and Investigation Society, or T.A.R.D.I.S. Lampshaded by Draco Malfoy, who is instrumental in setting it up. ^note  Draco laughed and shook his head. "Oh no, no, he won't be a Time Cop at all. Blame Nimue for this, but the organization I'm looking at building to protect the timeline is going to be called the Temporal Archiving, Reconstruction, Deparadoxing, and Investigation Society when we get it up and running." Then Draco grinned. "After all, my evil little sister is a dyed-in-the-wool Whovian."
  • Reivana refuses to call it such, but Stab denote the Electromagnetic distortion around all Princess strongholds as a Denial of Interloping Lift or Derigible Objects field.
• Furo Scene: Rare example of this trope being plot-relevant. The women who are interested in Harry are using this trope and the intimacy involved to help Harry recover from his time with the Dursleys.
• Genius Loci: The spirits of Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest, and the Great Lake, who during their meeting also discuss the spirit of Azkaban. Later on, more location spirits are awakened, including the spirit of the Port of Halifax which in turn causes the battlefield of Verdun which has been sealed away to begin to awaken.
• Giant Enemy Crab: Almost literally. Giant Abyssal Hermit Crabs masquerading as normal merchant ships.
• Glowing Eyes:
  • Harry's eyes glow when he uses onmyodo.
  • An Abyssal's eyes glow whenever they are feeling strong emotions. Hoppou's become notable due to the fact that when angered at Dementors attacking Harry, they glow a hellish red.
• Godzilla Threshold: Azkaban directed her Dementors to attack Sirius and damn the collateral. The end result of the thwarted attack has Albus and others begin plans on eliminating her. One of those plans on the shortlist of ones that could work involve putting every blessing and blessed charm onto a nuclear weapon, get it inside Azkaban, and detonate it.
• Graceful Loser: Crabbe, after Neville beats him at Texas Hold Em (Four Of A Kind Jacks beats Full House) with Chocolate as the betting material. After all, it's not like he paid for any of it; Draco did. Goyle saw what was about to happen coming and folded beforehand.
• Grievous Harm with a Body: During a sting operation against Fenrir Greyback, Hanna (the natural-born but not quite awakened Lutzow) beat up several werewolves using other werewolves, mainly with Fenrir himself.
• Ground-Shattering Landing:
  • In trying to get underneath Harry as he was struggling with his jinxed broom, Hamakaze jumping down off the bleachers and onto the Quiddich pitch craters the ground beneath her, the impact tremor so powerful that it disrupts Quirrelmort's concentration and spell.
  • Niobe also did one during Ehren Erwacht!, jumping from the flying carpet the heroes were using into the courtyard of Helmar Wolff's base of operations with such force that she cratered her landing zone.
• Half-Human Hybrid:
  • Lily Potter (née Evans) was an Unawakened natural-born Shipgirl. As a result, Harry himself is half-shipgirl, allowing him a very limited use of shipgirl equipment, as well as able to see and feel Shipgirls, Abyssals, and other spiritual and/or supernatural beings.
  • A handful of Hoppou’s human prisoners managed to escape the invasion of her territory and went into hiding along with their handlers. Since then, several of the Abyssals ended up falling in love and starting families with their former prisoners.
  • Muramasa-no-Norimune's daughters Colombe, Jacklyn, and Delilah are half-tsukumogami who are unable to easily unsummon their avatars.
  • Various secondary characters have one supernatural parent, although mostly focused on those that are first and second generation.
• Happily Adopted:
  • Harry and Hoppou sees each other as siblings after Nagato takes them in.
  • Later joined by Seiko, the Northern Little Sister.
• Happily Married: Tony Potter and Claire du Chasteler in the future, verging on Sickeningly Sweethearts. Their future shared grave centuries later reads 'Departed on the Honeymoon'.
• Hate Sink: There are a few character who are such, with Umbridge and the personification of Azkaban being particularly notable examples as they are portrayed as having no redeeming features whatsoever.
  • The Kamo Magical Government during World War II. Between Operation Akuzen Kaze ^note Japanese for Evil Wind, a plan to weaponize Obscurials and unleash them on the Allies and Operation Tatarigami ^note powerful type of vengeful spirit, basically a plan that would have instigated World War III as the Statute of Secrecy and the entire world were engulfed in flames, literally a plan meant to make sure no participants won the Second World War, even if those plans were ultimately unable to be implemented, have more than earned a place.
  • Several members of TOTEM within MACUSA have carried out highly questionable experiments in beyond Mad Scientist levels, ranging between "the ends justifies the means" to "For Science!".
• The Heart: Harry is this to the shipgirls of Yokosuka base, their cute little brother, and a reminder of what it is they are fighting for.
• Hidden Elf Village: The island of Avrora, a phantom island in the Bering Sea, has been inhabited by the survivors of Hoppou’s Fleet ever since they were driven out of Dutch Harbor, letting them hide and heal for the past several years.
• High-School Dance: The Yule Ball in Fourth Year is quite an example of this. It involves several major plot-relevant events during and around it including three seperate instances of a Love Confession, multiple examples of a Dance of Romance, two spiked drinks, a pair of major fights (one at the prom and a second outside), and The Big Damn Kiss at the end of one couples' night. And Flamingos!
• Hitler's Time Travel Exemption Act: All attempts to use the Time-Turners to prevent Blood Week failed as it disturbed the timelines enough to prevent any time travel to it. And before that, any attempts to kill Hitler also failed, for example one wizard trying to kill him during World War I but getting squashed by a falling airship.
• Hoist by His Own Petard: North Korea ceased to exist when Kim Jong-Il, believing Seoul was responsible for the Abyssals, ordered a nuclear strike on South Korea...and the targeting system made his own dirty bomb turn back and hit Pyongyang instead.
• Hold the Line:
  • The Battle of St.Brendan's Isle, where the island residents sortied against the abyssal force in outdated pre-WWI ships, including a Torpedo Boat (who summoned herself in the heat of battle) to hold until the Shipgirls arrive.
  • During the Battle of Kingsport Delilah de Breuil and then a group of obsolete pre-WWI shipgirls fight to protect Maine from a major Abyssal grouping until the US Navy and Zamarad can arrive.
• Holy Burns Evil:
  • Ever since Shiromizu (a very young river snake/dragon goddess) beat up Voldemort, the latter had to constantly feed on more victims to stay alive. And it is hinted that Harry also transfers some of the purification effect of his ofuda through their connection.
  • The Dementors learn this the hard way, three times. The third time is very notable as Harry's supercharged ofuda, drawing on Amaterasu's power, destroyed more than a hundred and scared the rest off. Then to add further insult to injury, the surviving Dementors run into Catherine, the tsukumogami of the Sword of St. Catherine, Jeanne D'Arc's sword, who uses her faith in God to decimate the survivors and release the souls they consumed. All told, only about two dozen Dementors at most, out of hundreds, survived. Which gets even better, as Azkaban had connected herself to the Dementors when she sensed Catherine, she was hurt as a direct result.
  • Amisi (invoking Horus-Ra) and Colombe (invoking Apollo Pythios) are both capable of terrifying anti-Dark Creature spellcraft.
• Holy Hand Grenade: Nagato's 16-inch shells, amplified by the ofuda which were written with the brush made of pure unicorn hair, which in turn was freely gifted with no ulterior motives, further amplified with her own's love and desire to protect Harry, resulted in the boom a size of a small tactical nuke that more or less erased the normally unkillable Gashadokuro from existence.
• Homosexual Reproduction: Due to being more spirit than living being, shipgirls and tsukumogami can produce children with partners of any gender. One member of the relationship must be biologically female, however, in order to carry the children in pregnancy.
• The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: How Greyback meets his end, by taking bait in the form of Unawakened shipgirl Hanna, who was pretending to be an ordinary, weak human.
• Hunting the Most Dangerous Game: Walden MacNair was guilty of this. The guy had spaces on his trophy wall for the heads of Nagato and Hoppou, either of which would have turned his attempts to hunt them into The Hunter Becomes the Hunted.
• Inhumanable Alien Rights: Under ICW many magical beings got shafted hard and put in reserves, if they were lucky. The Japanese Youkai in particular were treated badly as punishment for both Pre-Meiji defiance of ICW and in the aftermath of WW2. In one of the sidestories series many Youkai who were unsatisfied with the situation founded the Japanese Non-Human Rights Organization to fight for the Youkai rights, and they were gaining enough power and influence to actually make a difference. But then on the day they planned to introduce their Bill to the Magical Diet the Abyssals started the Blood Week, gutting both the JNHRO's and the Magical Diet's leaderships, and when the latter "re-organized" they snubbed the now weak JNHRO. In the following decade JNHRO rebuild itself as more of aid and charity organization for the Youkai.
• Interspecies Romance: Shipgirls often fall in love with the humans close to them. US Admiral John Richardson, for instance, has had it happen twice; according to Word of God his late first wife, Jane's mother, was USS Langley. His second wife is IJN Mutsu.
• Intimidation Demonstration: After Harry defeated Quirrelmort, RO, while guarding Harry, decided to demonstrate to Auror Hestia Jones that any attempts on Harry's life would meet a swift end.
  More then a little nervous as she guarded her boss, Hestia glanced around the room only to come to a stop at the sight of what looked like a girl no older then eleven, twelve at most. Said girl was in, of all things, a red and white swimsuit. But that was not what caught Hestia's attention. Rather it was the sword that said girl was slowly polishing.
  
  Then the girl caught her eye and pulled out a napkin that she dropped onto the sword... and which split in half as it touched the blade's edge. Said girl then smiled in a predatory way and Hestia had to stop herself from shuddering at how cold her eyes seemed at that moment.
  
  For some odd reason, Hestia felt that perhaps any quick movements should be avoided.
  
  Perhaps.
• Island of Mystery: The various phantom islands throughout history are explained as the result of wizards casting Unplottable charms on them for whatever reason, making them impossible to locate by conventional means. Unfortunately, the Abyssals who drove those wizards off these islands like to use them as staging points.
• It's All About Me: Harry thought that Horcrux Riddle was so full of himself that he was practically a chunni.
• Just a Kid: With Admiral Goto away on Navy business at the time, Harry and the young shipgirls had to report their ominous dreams to an Officer who dismissed their concerns partly because they were kids and partly out of his anti-shipgirl opinions.
• Kansas City Shuffle: How the Malfoy Family and friends get revenge on Cormac McLaggen for sexually harassing Ehren leading to her public emotional breakdown at the Yule ball — along with Nimue getting revenge on her brother for scaring her with the giant squid during her first visit to the Slytherin head Boy's room.
  • To wit, Dumbledore has already formally punished Cormac by among other things, a loss of enough House Points to drop Gryffindor from first to last in the standings. Therefore any further 'informal discipline' taken by the Malfoys has to be deniable. Over Valentine's Weekend, Draco takes Pansy to Hogsmeade to provide an alibi for his actions, then 'loses his wand' during the date (actually handed secretly off to Greg Goyle) to justify her returning alone to Hogwarts while he 'searches for it'. Draco then heads to the Three Broomsticks where Nimue and his Fleet are waiting for him in a private room, then uses a Time-Turner to jump back with the Fleet to that morning, where he promptly Floos out to London for his planned Valentine's Date with them. This further establishes his alibi when he meets Hermione and Ron at Windsor Castle during an award ceremony where he proposes to Cleopatra the day after Valentine's. Meanwhile, Nimue disguises herself as Draco with Ehren's help, then heads to Hogwarts with Draco's 'lost' wand. Nimue and Ehren meet with the Weasley Twins (who think they are actually meeting Draco and Ehren who hired them for help with the prank) to provide them with several doses of a potion Narcissa brewed that temporarily turns males into females. The next day, before breakfast, 'Draco' is successfully publicly dared by the Weasley Twins to drink a dose of that potion (which actually does nothing to Nimue who is a girl) to goad Cormac into taking a dose as well. The potion turns Cormac into a girl as Ehren drops the illusion disguising Nimue's female body to make it appear to the crowd of witnesses that 'Draco' got girlified as well. Cue Melissia and Argalia giving these 'cute girls' a makeover — which Nimue openly flaunts (being a girl all along of course) for the rest of the day so as to embarrass Draco once he finally returns to Hogwarts that evening to find out what 'Pretty Slytherin Princess Draco-chan' had been doing during his absence. Draco also secretly takes a dose as well upon arrival that turns him female for a hour so that the potion publicly 'wears off' for him — therefore as as a 'victim' of this prank he can't be punished for it especially with his firm alibi!
• Karmic Death:
  • Not only was the fang from the basilisk, a creature that a young Tom Riddle used, the item that destroyed the diary and Horcrux, but Myrtle Warren, the woman he killed to create said Horcrux, got to help drive the fang through the diary.
  • Marge Dursley had a habit of drowning any puppies that she felt didn't display enough aggression. She met her demise when a pack of feral dogs chased her to the riverbank where she'd drown such "defective" puppies, fell in, and met the exact same fate.
• King in the Mountain: Mikasa, who had refused any summoning attempts until Harry got onto her museum ship during an Abyssal attack and pleaded to her to save his classmates.
• Laser-Guided Karma: A would-be swordsmaster with with connections to a survivor from sub-unit 942 had Nameless aka Yawarakai-Te mindraped to force her to serve him. After Tatsuya and company take him down, he is interrogated by Muramasa-no-Kagotsuruhe. After that, Masamune-no-Honjo destroys his hands and leaves him unable to wield a sword ever again.
• The Last Dance: A former hit wizard named Richard Willows sacrificed his life to allow a school to be evacuated.
• Last Stand: Hoppou and her fleet of 380 ships (the rest of her ships being deployed elsewhere at the time) against five Abyssal fleets, numbering roughly 2,500, led by a pair of Battleship Princesses. If Hoppou lost, the people of Unalaska would be next on the attackers' list. The outcome? Hoppou was the last living Abyssal left in Unalaska when the battle finally came to a close, with her few surviving defenders scattered to the seas. The citizens of Unalaska were unharmed, and no more than a dozen of the enemy got away with their lives.
• Let No Crisis Go to Waste: Everybody who had problems with the Statute of Secrecy are taking advantage of the increasing un-enforceability of it caused by the Abyssal War.
  • Lucius uses the Abyssal War, or rather Fudge's Head-in-the-Sand Management stance on it, to increase his influence.
  • Councillor Ito using the threat of inpending Civil War and the Tokyo Diet's incompetence to call for a Vote Of No Confidence and formally switch Government to Kyoto, who actually know what they're doing.
• Life Drinker: Horcuxes only last as long as the one's natural lifespan, and to get around it Voldermort put a spell on his followers' Dark Marks that when said followers get killed, their remaining lifespan will be transferred to him, potentially giving thousands of extra years just from the casualties in the First War. Then Harry happened, connecting them, and their First Year encounter made the boy's actions consume the accumulated extra years and redirect it towards the summoning of the paper ships.
• Literal Split Personality: All Abyssals, good or bad, have some darkness in their souls... but in the Re-class battleships, this darkness is great enough to take the form of a “demon” that they must struggle to keep control of, or else it will consume them.
• The Magic Comes Back: Magic levels on Earth rise and fall over the course of millenia, with the present-day being in a low magic era, relatively near the predicted lowest point in fact. The summonings of the shipgirls, however, releases so much magical and spiritual energy that magic levels are rising drastically. This, and the other consequences of the Abyssal War and Blood Week, are causing magical creatures and beings long dormant to become active again, which is part of the reason that The Masquerade is in such dire straits.
• Magic Is a Monster Magnet:
  • Concentrations of negative energy, such as the sites of large massacres, attract Abyssals.
  • Likewise, Yokosuka and Sasebo are becoming very attractive to youkai because of the spiritual energy of the shipgirls, as well as the energy released during summoning them. This led to Fubuki and Yuudachi having to deal with a teke-teke when Harry was younger, and is why Haru is there. More recently, Hibiki was attacked by an Aka Manto; the biggest (and last) mistake of its life.
• Mama Bear:
  • If you try harming one of DesDiv6, Tenryuu will give you a closer view of her sword than you would ever want, as both a Re-class (who she cut in half) and a Light Cruiser Water Princess (who ended up impaled to the hilt) can attest.
  • The Northern Water Princess is fiercely protective of her sole daughter, who was born defective.
  • After finding out about her daughters Norimune is turning into one, something she shares with her oldest daughter Colombe
  • After Kiyoshimo took a salvo of torpedoes meant for Pennsylvania, Pennsy first blew the head off the Abyssal cruiser that launched them, before going Cold Sniper on every Abyssal in range covering the girls hauling Kiyoshimo to a rescue boat.
• Masquerade: That was in process of unraveling due to the Abyssal War, and the vast majority of magicals are in blatant denial, while a small minority were preparing for heads to roll once it Statue of Secrecy finally collapses. It eventually collapses in-universe of March 2015.
• Mass "Oh, Crap!": On the night of October 31, 2011, everyone in Hogwarts was paralyzed with fear when an Abyssal Princess entered Great Hall. Then they heard Hoppou call Harry Big Brother and saw her hug him.
• Master of Illusion: Tamamo-no-Mae is stated to have been capable of illusions that are so realistic that she might as well be doing the real thing. An illusion of her pulling out someone's heart could literally make their body collapse, dead.
• Mayfly–December Friendship:
  • Nagato doesn't like to think about the possibility of outliving her son Harry.
  • This is one of the things that tsukumogami and supernatural beings have to deal with as their mortal owners, friends, and family will inevitably die. A notable example of this is Colombe du Chasteler who starts as the 'oldest daughter' of Jean-Francois, and has to come to terms at the funerals of her Papa, stepmother, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and eventually a pair of great-grandnephews while not outwardly aging.
• Mayfly–December Romance:
  • In the same vein, Haru warns Natsumi that this is inevitable if she decides to pursue Harry.
  • Again Colombe has to deal with this. In 1899 she met Lyra and Ian Potter at the nadir of her life and forged a powerful romantic bond with them. Ian died in 1927 and Lyra in 1949, and Colombe went into seclusion for decades afterward from grief. This is lampshaded by Delilah thinking to herself when she sees the elderly Lyra and the outwardly youthful Colombe together in 1942 how every moment they can spend together is an incredibly precious gift to them.
  • Subverted with Delilah and Zamarad. While the Ifrit is initially advised by her mother that she will inevitably outlive her romantic partner, she and her family eventually come to realize that Delilah can live for multiple centuries as well. This makes Zamarad deliriously happy, the more so because those of their children who are not jinn will be tsukumogami as well. The subversion extends to Delilah finding someone that she will not naturally outlive unlike her sister Colombe and the doomed Lyra.
  • A key part of Neville Longbottom's relationship to Lily Moon. Not only is he a human and she an elf, but they both know that he is fated to die young and gloriously as the Norse Champion. ^note  Then her grandmother sighed and her shoulders slumped, looking every year of her twelve and a half centuries. "I see. You know that you are doomed for heartbreak on the day when he inevitably is chosen by Skuld when she gathers the slain. The same cup that your mother drank when she heard the news of your father's sacrifice... and I drank in my turn eleven centuries ago when we raised this barrow for him to sleep within as long as Midgard lasts. Heroes burn so bright and yet so briefly, even for human lifespans. He is not fated to live a long life of peace and joy with you, you should know."
• Mega Meal Challenge: The Nine Clan Heads challenge, which consists of nine full courses - the "Little Burger", a smash-style burger with all the works and two patties, with a pound of meat per patty; the Die-Maru, which was an even bigger burger with additions such as a massive amount of pulled pork alongside the lamb, chicken, and veal patties that made it up beside the beef ones; "The Hunted", a meat lovers pizza nearly as wide as most are tall; the Nigiri-iator, a massive course of sushi; the "Meter of Just This", meter tall and long roll sandwiches filled with all sorts of things; the "Steakmaru of the Hundred Pounds", a one-hundred-pound steak with all the trimmings; the "Wheel of Meat Fortune", a round plate the size of a small table that has a meat platter on it; "The Marbling of the Northern Beef", a wagyu beef Sukiyaki placed inside a large cauldron than the normal hot pot; and finally the "Parfait-Bound", a parfait served in a vessel the size of a large punchbowl with the parfait itself being about the size of a medium chandelier. Needless to say, only the biggest of eaters can successfully beat this challenge, but the lifetime of free food for succeeding has drawn many contenders.
• Might Makes Right:
  • Fenrir Greyback the werewolf believes in this, and takes advantage of the collapsing Statute of Secrecy to attack and turn people more openly as an act of superiority, going as far as to attempt an attack on a brother of a natural-born shipgirl just to make a point.
  • The default behavior of most Abyssals, to the point that even the nicest Abyssals have an instinctual hatred of weakness or defects that they need to suppress.
• Mirror Character:
  • Hanna, the natural-born Lutzow, to Harry to the point of Spear Counterpart. Both grew in in abusive homes with maternal relatives (his Aunt, her Uncle) and were rescued from that life by a relative Shipgirl (Adopted Mother Nagato for him, Actual Sister Prinz Eugen for her). A lot of the Ship Tease between them centres on the fact that only they truly understand without pity or comparison what the other went through.
  • A darker and far more tragic version of this happens among Ehren du Chasteler and her parents with Colombe du Chasteler and Helmar von und zu Wolff mirroring each other save for the key issue of where they have sworn their allegiances. This is lampshaded in their final fight where both Colombe and Helmar react exactly the same to their final attempts to turn the other person away from the impending fight to the death.
• Mix-and-Match Critters:
  • Prinz Eugen adopted (or got adopted by) a Tanzelwurm she named Matilda, a large cat with a lower body of a serpent. The wizards who initially tried (and failed) to cover it up, decided that it was ultimately not worth angering a shipgirl any further and cut their losses.
  • Dark example: Tom Riddle, inspired by H. P. Lovecraft, created chimera inferi. Literally taking animal parts and combining them into monstrous creatures before reanimating them.
• Mugging the Monster: Over the years, several of Japan's less pleasant yokai have tried to prey on kanmusu, or family members like Jane Richardson and Harry Nagato-Potter. It has never ended well for the yokai.
  • Hoppou sneaks into Hogwarts to see Harry using the linked boxes he uses for sending mail to Japan... on the same night that the troll got in. She ends up dragging the troll into the Great Hall so Harry can lecture it.
  • Perverts who try to grope kanmusu on trains end up regretting it.
  • In an omake, a Boogeyman who once went after Harry makes the mistake of trying to scare Hoppou.
  • When Harry ended up in Knockturn Alley, a shipgirl looking for him educates a trio of vampires on the futility of attacking a shipgirl.
  • A pervert tried to capture Hoppou, Asuka, and Rei in the hopes of having a good time with them. Hoppou taught him why this was an extremely bad idea.
  • A jealous Pansy Parkinson decided to bully a First Year Hufflepuff whom her fellow Fourth Year Draco Malfoy was showing interest in. Unfortunately for her, Ehren du Chasteler is the spirit of a SS honor dagger and much more experienced and powerful than her aged-down chibi avatar would suggest....
• Mundane Solution:
  • While everybody else discussed how to find info on Nicholas Flamel, the lack of progress on that front and how apparently the wizards had hidden it, Niiyodo simply looked him up on the internet.
  • When Wanko wanted reliable information about what happened to Hoppou, she traveled to a small town to look through their discarded newspapers. Sirius did something similar after escaping Azkaban.
• My God, What Have I Done?:
  • Killing Quirrel put Harry into this state for weeks, until Haruna convinced him to let it all out.
  • Happened to Ehren shortly after manifesting when she looked up why Colombe hated and feared her wearing the uniform of the SS.
• My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Hoppou and Wanko are content with merely keeping their territories under control without interfering with the humans, for which the other Abyssals despise them.
• Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: As in real life, a number of times someone has tried to help has ended up making the situation worse.
  • The spirit of King Arthur's ship, Prydwen merged with the dying spirit of Camelot and set out on a quest to recover every Arthurian artifact to preserve them for King Arthur's return. When King Arthur came back to Castle Camelot looking for weapons to drive back the Norman Invasion, he instead found an empty armory.
  • During a gas attack on October 28, 1918, Schild Gottes only had the time to save the nearest soldier to her, her friend from Austria.
• Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
  • Diarymort chose to curse Draco to still be aware of the world before having the basilisk paralyze him. As a result, the Malfoys will have nothing to do with him now.
  • Voldemort made the Dark Marks absorb the life force of his Death Eaters and transfer it to him, allowing him to greatly extend his natural lifespan beyond its natural length. This accumulated life force would unknowingly be used by Harry Potter himself via the horcrux in his forehead to fuel a ritual meant to summon unbuilt shipgirls, due to the ritual being Cast from Lifespan.
• Noble Demon: Skadi Járnbrauð, Abyssal Northern War Demon, was chased to Gibraltar by a shipgirl fleet. Invoking the famed neutrality of Gibraltar and its now-manifest Installation Shipgirl, she used her two-day stay to repair and rearm, honoring her oath of peace both by word and spirit, paying well for her provisions and civilly conversing with the locals and even one of her pursuers. When her respite ended, knowing she could not defeat the shipgirls awaiting her at the territorial limit, she challenged Gibraltar herself, so that her final battle would be an epic worthy of the skalds. And it was.
  HERE LIES
  Skadi Járnbrauð, Abyssal War Demon
  HONOR SHE HAD, STRONG ENOUGH TO WOUND A GODDESS
• Noodle Incident: One battle that the Order of the Phoenix fought in Amsterdam is this. It involved a spell Lily created to make toilet bowls explode, it left Lucius Malfoy with a crippling fear of clogs, and Rabastan Lestrange now feels a compulsive urge to attack any windmills he sees.
• Nuclear Option: While it is clearly a plan of last resort, if nothing better or just as effective, can be found, using one and blessing it with every charm or purification and divine blessing that can fit on it is one of the plans on the table to deal with Azkaban.
• Nuclear Weapons Taboo: Very much averted during Blood Week, where nuclear weapons were used in desperation against the Abyssals until the shipgirls began to manifest and stem the tide. Diego Garcia was nuked into radioactive glass to destroy the bloodthirsty by even Abyssal standards Elder Princess who made it her base of operations.
• Obstructive Bureaucrat:
  • The reason why Shiromizu decided to hide on the Shipgirl naval base instead of going to the magical authorities to request protection. They might have killed her on the spot for not being on her designated reservation, might have simply sent her back, and in the unlikely case they might have listened, the actual bureaucracy would take too long.
  • Magical governments and most of their officials as a whole are this, with the ICW being regarded with particular scorn by shipgirls and non-magical government officials who are aware of the magical side of things.
• Oh, Crap!:
  • Japan is briefly driven into a panic when a massive Abyssal fleet, numbering in the dozens and containing multiple Princesses and Demons, is discovered to be closing in on the Kushiro naval base. It’s the surviving members of Hoppou’s old fleet, coming to surrender to the humans so they can be with their mother again.
  • When Hoppou demonstrates the unique (so far) ability to extract a living Abyssal’s soul from her body, potentially revealing her true identity as an Elder Princess, Supply Depot Princess has a panic attack on the spot.
  • Hoppou, in the aftermath of the Dementor attack on Harry is so livid that every person sensitive to magic or her moods in the area can feel her anger. In fact, her rage is so great, it was felt thousands of miles away on Avroraby her own daughters and granddaughters.
  • Seen three times at Saint Kitts. Once when Middle Passage Princess is caught arming and spotting her planes by a massive airstrike from the carriergirls, once when Mika in a Muramasa blood frenzy tears through an Elite Re-Class flagship enroute to the rest of her warband, and finally when City Consuming Princess realizes that the battle is lost and Porta has hung her out to dry.
  • Helmar von and zu Wolff when he realized that his old lover Colombe du Chasteler had just arrived in his Unplottable hideout while leading a strike force of top tier asskickers including the other two Blades of Hachiman and a shipgirl to 'discuss' his unilateral change to Ehren's child custody arrangments.
• The Old Gods:
  • The primordial entity known only as Wolf Mother originally gave some humans the ability to assume a lupine form. Even after she spent an unknown amount of time sealed away, with her gift twisted into a curse, she is still powerful enough that just bumping into the likes of Odin tends to make him have a brown trousers moment.
  • China has Fox-Sibling, primordial deity of foxes, who threatens to awaken while China is going through the messy province of deciding who receives the Mandate of Heaven. Sun Wukong ^note Bear in mind the guy made himself immortal five times over says he'd have the best chance of surviving against her, simply because he's so hard to kill.
• Onmyōdō: Because they had Japanese magicals serving on them, Ryuujo and Jun'you can use Onmyodo. They, along with the Kitsune Haru, taught Harry some of it.
• Painting the Medium: Speech from Abyssals is typically done in Times New Roman, as opposed to the website's standard font, to reflect how eldritch their speech is.
• Paper-Thin Disguise:
  • Hermione conceals her shipgirl nature while at school, as she is on a mission to learn more about the magical world from the perspective of an ordinary witch. Everyone who has ever spent time with shipgirls can see right through her.
  • Similarly, at one point Wanko and Revina attempt to infiltrate Yokosuka to check on Hoppou's condition. Wanko uses stealth-enhancing items captured from a particularly (and fatally) foolish witch; Revina puts on a fedora and glasses. And outfits her tail with Groucho Marx glasses and a wig. While humming the Mission Impossible theme. It's not clear if she honestly thinks this will work or if she's just taking Refuge in Audacity.
• Patriotic Fervor:
  • Aso, of the wrong kind. She cannot accept that the Empire of Japan was bad or wrong in any way, denies its war crimes, and hates foreigners in general and Americans in particular. Houshou and Katsuragi (who is less than 6-years old here) are among the very few who try to be friendly with her. Aso also uses this extreme nationalism as a crutch for her insecurities, and when she undergoes Heel Realization by meeting a group that is much, much worse than her, she comes dangerously close to suffering a total mental breakdown.
  • And then there's USS Despatch, a firm believer in Manifest Destiny who believes the United States of America should cover the whole world.
• Perception Filter: Wanko has a ring with a powerful Notice-Me-Not effect on it, spoils from a witch who had tried to sneak in (not knowing that it didn't work against Abyssals and was in fact allowed to get inside before being killed) and bomb her.
• Plausible Deniability:
  • Tanzelwurms are on the list of magical creatures that are allowed to be discovered, just in case further coverup proves to be impossible, as other than their unusual appearances they have no overt magical traits.
  • How to explain away the island full of animal people without pointing at the magical world? Say that they got dumped from an alternate dimension into ours, because there is already a precedent of dimension hopping with the Fleet of Fog.
  • Haruto Hinata goes out of his way to know nothing about any smuggling that may or may not be going on at the Yokai Reserve he lives and works at specifically so that he cannot be pressured into giving any information about it away.
• Polyamory: Hoo boy, there's quite a bit of this trope.
  • At last count, Harry Potter had 28 girls after him.
  • Ron Weasley has Warspite, Duke of York, Jean Bart, an Abyssal Installation named Summer, an Abyssal Battleship Princess named Brigid, and prospectively an Abyssal Te-Class named Temeraire later down the line.
  • Percy Weasley started out in a love triangle with Ooyodo and a Supply Depot Princess named Supprin. Then Amisi the Egyptian sunshipgirl inserted herself into the mix.
  • Draco Malfoy has the shipgirls Niobe, Johnston, and Cleopatra, with Ehren du Chasteler confirmed to eventually join in.
• Powder Keg Crowd: The Tokyo Magical Government's lack of response and de-facto abandonment of Hokkaido to the arrival of fortunately peaceful remnants of the Fleet of Laughter resulted in various groups planning a protest by the Magical Diet building. Several of the groups wanted to wait and see how things would go first, but the more radicals ones decided to go with it anyway. Then the pro-government groups caught wind of this and organized their own counter-protest, and by coincidence there was a concert nearby with a lot of students, many of them drunk, who kept joining both. By the time everyone gathered and started glaring at each other, the leaders on both sides realized that the combined numbers now exceeded both the legal limits that they could do without requesting permits ahead of time, which they did not had, and their own ability to keep everyone at line. Then the rumors started flying of the Magical Government trying to sweep the recent fiasco under the rug, and crowd got agitated, and then in the case of Poor Communication Kills the Aurors starting arresting the leaders of both sides in plain view, after said leaders requested their help in containing the situation. And thus started a true riot which lasted for hours and left hundreds injured and eight dead.
• Powered by a Forsaken Child: Unit 731 had a magical side to it, intentionally creating Obscurials from children for use against Japan's enemies. Fortunately, they were destroyed before they could be deployed.
• The Power of Love:
  • Lily's blood wards needs either a blood relation or unconditional love towards the warded one, and Nagato more than provides the latter for Harry.
  • Harry's love for his adopted mother is what also unlocks Nagato's "marriage upgrade".
• Properly Paranoid: A pair of well-meaning but not very bright wizards tried to drug Sarah Gale with mind-altering potions so they could make her break up with Washington, in the hopes that they could make Washington disappear into the magical world afterwards. As soon as they were caught in the attempt and word spread to other naval bases, every other shipgirl currently in a relationship with a non-magical human started living with them specifically to forestall any future attempts.
• Proportional Aging: Shipgirls age very slowly before getting their age locked at around 20, which is very noticeable on destroyers. This depresses the previously-human Tenryuu, as her two daughters, who turned out to be Inazuma and Ikazuchi, look considerably younger than their former classmates.
• Rage Quit: When it became clear to the Kamo Administration that there was no scenario where Japan won against the Allies, they started setting up a False Flag Operation with a V2 missile for the Emperor's Palace and an operation that would violently drop the Statute, triggering a third World War. Thankfully, these plans were averted before they could come to pass.
• Real Event, Fictional Cause: USS Iowa's turret explosion in 1989 was caused by an Abyssal attack. The confusion regarding it was due to wizards going through and Obliviating the crew.
• Refuge in Audacity:
  • Revina, a Re-class battleship, accompanied her boss, Wanko, to Yokosuka to check on Hoppou. While Wanko had a ring with powerful enchantments meant to make her unnoticeable, Revina donned a hat and glasses (plus a wig and Groucho Marx glasses for her tail) as a disguise. It almost worked...
  • The weapons of Astolfo, upon being asked to meet with Harry, decided that before doing so, they should bake a cake. But not being satisfied with mundane ingredients, they decided to visit the realm of The Fair Folk for some truly good ingredients, which culminated in them raiding the kitchen of the Summer Court. They then decided it would be a good idea to use said kitchen to bake the cake. Only they didn't want to get their clothes covered in flour, so they both baked the cake in a Naked Apron.
• Reincarnation Romance: Many characters that are in a relationship were also in a relationship in their past life.

• Resurrective Immortality: When the Research Princess is killed, she gets back by hatching out from one of her subordinates.
• Revenge Before Reason: Averted. As much as Upholder wants to go after the Basilisk herself she remains at her post.
• Roaring Rampage of Rescue: Harry, Fudo, the reincarnates, and the heirs to the Yokai clans got trapped in a bunker where Sub-Unit 942 were attempting to resurrect monstrosities like the pelt of Tamamo-no-Mae and the Yamata-no-Orochi. A large group of shipgirls, the JGSDF, the Potter Armory, and the heads of the Yokai clans rallied to storm the bunker to rescue them and put down everything in the bunker.
• Roaring Rampage of Revenge:
  • The Abyssals tried to pass the blame of their own attempt on Hoppou on humans, in hopes of getting Wanko into this state. She did... against the Abyssals, after she found out about the treachery.
  • Haru slipped into this state after the Abyssals killed her husband during the Blood Week, going after low-level Abyssals before her sister caught up with her and beat some sense into her.
  • Zamarad slipped into this as well during The Battle of Kingsport resulting in most of the town being burned down and Wood Island literally burned to the bedrock in her attempt to save Delilah.
  • The Mizuchi Yodogawa, for all that she typically acts like a Scatterbrained Senior, is still one of the more powerful Mizuchi. When her human lover Etsumi was killed during Blood Week, she wiped out every single Abyssal within 100 miles of Osaka, all with the Yodogawa River running pure white from her rage.
• Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!:
  • On occasion throughout the war - but in no more powerful case than during Blood Week - magicals defied the Statute of Secrecy and their own governments in order to help save lives, be they ordinary citizens or magical beings, or even Aurora, who in any other situation would have been locking up such blatant breaches.
  • Colombe du Chasteler's life is made of this trope, which accounts for her Hero with Bad Publicity status.
• Shapeshifter Baggage: Shipgirls can change their weight, from their original tons to that of normal human.
• Shocking Defeat Legacy: The Blood Week, when the Abyssal started their first full all-out offensive on humanity, which left many of coastal cities utterly devastated and with uncountable amount of fatalities. Only the appearance of the Shipgirls repelled the Abyssals.
• Shrinking Violet: Shinano has self-esteem issues as heavy as her tonnage, due to her being an inefficient conversion as well as having no battle experience to speak of. Fortunately, Harry is there for her.
• Sins of Our Fathers: The Nine-Tailed Kitsunes Hoshi and Tsuki are the daughters of Tamamo-no-Mae herself, whose actions cast the long and dark shadow upon them. They treasure any relation and friendship that look past that.
• Start My Own: Tired of the corruption and Fantastic Racism towards Yokai, the more moderate members of the Tokyo Magical Diet decided to split off and start a more moderate administration based in Kyoto. Eventually, Kyoto became the de facto administration, with Tokyo being shut down due to a Vote of No Confidence.
• Stupid Evil: What Grindelwald considers Voldemort to be due to his making horcruxes and believing that they grant true immortality, and then making it so that people are too afraid to say his name. The only thing horcruxes do is make sure that the wizard or witch who created one will live the longest they can, but it doesn't mean that they won't eventually die. Doing so also results in the person being Barred from the Afterlife. And with his making it so that everyone is afraid to say his name, he has ensured that he will be forgotten, unlike Grindlewald, who will be remembered for his evil acts, and thus have a sort of immortality that way. Grindelwald says that for a man like Voldemort, this would be a Fate Worse than Death, and he did it to himself.
• Snake People: Shiromizu and other Snake-like Youkai can transform into a lamia-like form.
• Spared by the Adaptation: The authors have made it quite clear that they are not fans of how JK Rowling tried to establish that the stakes had been raised by unceremoniusly killing members of the cast, meaning that quite a few of the canon deaths will most likely be averted.
  • Gilderoy Lockhart did not suffer his canon Death of Personality.
  • Of all people, Pandora Lovegood was spared her canon death in Luna's backstory, although she's clearly not all there in the head.
• Speaks Fluent Animal: Shiromizu gifted Harry an ability to speak with snakes naturally, without depending on Voldemort's Horcrux.
• Spider People: Prominently with the jorougumo (females) and the tsuchigumo (males) of Japan.
  • Kuroshi was a jorogumo who sought to devour Youkai for their powers (an ability she has taken from an evil wizards who wished to do the same, he just had a misfortune to use it on her), with power of divinity high on her list, which she hopes to attain by devouring Shiromizu. Got killed in attempt to do so. Kuroshi was a bit of an outlier in terms of her habits. Due to conditions in the reserves, other jorogumo were forced to overcome their predatory natures and learn to coexist with other creatures. Needless to say, they are much nicer as a result.
  • Tadashi is a tsuchigumo who used to be a daimyo, eventually mellowing out to the modern day when the Statue of Secrecy falls.
• Sticky Fingers: Usually Played for Laughs.
  • It turns out that the Potter family has earned a reputation as "Bloody Magpies," much to Harry's bemusement. Such item acquired by the Potters include an F-14 Tomcat stolen by Lily, MULTIPLE B-24 bombers taken after World War II, various tanks, and Honjo Masamune. In the case of Honjo, Harry's grandfather won a bet against an American wizard aliased as Coldy Bimore. Subverted with Juuchi Yosamu, as that blade has become a legitimate heirloom that can only be controlled or wielded by a Potter.
  • American Subgirls have a very similar reputation. Of course, like the other Subgirls around the world, this is because they are desperate to receive attention.
• Summoning Ritual: The non-natural-born Shipgirls are either summoned through rituals or materialize by themselves because of special circumstances. The biggest summoning ritual to date is a co-operation of Canadian muggles and magicals in summoning the Halifax Installation which involved the three days long festivities of Natal Day along with many Magical ones happening at the same time. The resulting magical storm that formed in the spiritual realm also had a side-effect of summoning a lot of other older shipgirls and nearby fort installations, and it blanked and then outright destroyed magical sensors from as far as England.
• Supernatural Angst: Namiko Nagawa was caught up in the Abyssal raid during the school trip and awakened as Ushio, after which she started to panic-worry on who or what she is and what is going to happen to her, then her school friends argue with each other on how to help her get through with this, leading her to deeper depression, and then her well-meaning but frantic and overbearing parents make it worse. Fortunately, her older brother cheered her up, and things go better after that.
• Take That!:
  • Admiral Aetos of Greece took a jab at Rowling's lore that Bellerophon was just a normal wizard and Pegasus a normal winged horse. Considering that Aetos is actually none other than Medea of Colchis herself, she would know better.
  • There is a Ravenclaw first-year who refuses to read his textbooks because he would rather discover things himself, is constantly gazing at his navel, thinks magical books should be locked away because of the destruction they can cause, and thinks that ghosts are recordings on loops while shipgirls are not summoned, because he does not believe in the afterlife, and believes that humanity should destroy death and focus everything on achieving that goal. There is a betting pool on when he will be expelled for being an arse and violating safety.
• Taking You with Me:
  • This was the Kamo Government's plan when they saw that Japan would lose World War II. They dubbed it Operation Tatarigami, after extremely powerful ghosts of vengeance that could cause natural disasters.
  • When the No-Mag government prepared to surrender, the Magical military, higher-ranking members of the government, and certain researchers would gather in a certain caldera base, which was essentially an armored bunker thanks to the wards on it. Additionally, every single ship that the magicals had created would gather there.
  • Predicting that one month after the official surrender, the Allied No-Maj fleet would arrive in Tokyo Bay, they would revive the spirits of those fallen in the war and contain them in special "Ghost Shells", while also preparing shells and bombs that contained Fiendfyre.
  • Using a variant on the Portkey spell designed for heavy objects, the Magical fleet would arrive and launch their assault.
  • Between spirits tearing through battleships, Hellfire that took the appearance of various animals, and Onmyōdō and Yōkai teleporting onto the decks of ships and killing the officers, Operation Tatarigami would have broken The Statute of Secrecy in the worst possible way, causing the end of World War II to quickly turn into the beginning of World War III, this time between the Magical and No-Maj worlds.
  • Luckily, Ume and Sakura, not wanting the situation in the caldera to continue, lifted the wards before the operation could even begin, allowing the Allies to destroy the caldera, completely neutralizing the plan.
• The Talk: After trying to dump the responsibility on various people who bailed out or chastened her for trying to (including fairy Yamamoto), Nagato gave Harry the Talk. And then Kongou and Mikasa arrived and gave their own version.
• Talking in Your Dreams: Has occurred several times in the story, for shipgirls and Abyssals (usually close to Harry) undergoing upgrades or reconstruction.
  • During her upgrade (during which shipgirls are comatose), Nagato met with Lily on the dock between life and death, who thanked her for raising their son well.
  • Hibiki during her Kai Ni had a long discussion with James Potter, who had wanted to meet one of the girls after his son's heart.
  • Regalia the defective Re-class meets James and Lily while under reconstruction, and together they connect to the "sea of stars"—the afterlife of benevolent Abyssals—where her her deceased aunts get the chance to meet their niece and ask her to pass on a message to Hoppou.
  • Renita, able to have a peaceful sleep for the first time in years while she is rebuilt, is visited by her dead siblings, who offer their love, thanks, and forgiveness for everything she has done.
  • James greets Regina during her upgrade to Flagship, hinting that her bond with Harry together with her new power could one day result in something incredible.
  • Also a way that deities are allowed to speak to their Champions to pass along advice and instructions as seen with Draco Malfoy and Ehren du Chasteler.
• Talking to the Dead:
  • Victory's Christmas present to Albus and Aberforth is to bring out fairy Ariana to them, who is technically part of her crew since their Royal Navy grandfather pulled a few strings to have her baptized on Victory's hull with her bell.
  • Regalia, during her rebuild, gets to meet those of the Fleet of Laughter who died in their Last Stand to protect Unalaska from five Abyssal fleets attacking them. Through these interactions, she receives critical information that a member of the fleet thought to be lost forever is not only still alive, but trying to find her way back home.
• Tangled Family Tree:
  • The situation regarding Harry’s extended family has become... complicated, to say the least. The most recent additions to his family include a clan of Yokai, has a Fae ancestor, and (by having Hoppou as his adopted sister) close to a hundred Abyssals.
  • As one might expect from the Malfoy Family, they have their own set of massively tangled family relationships. Thanks to Lucius Malfoy's paternal grandmother being the daughter of the then-head of the French Malfoy branch (who married her British cousin around the time of World War I), and Colombe du Chasteler being the (adopted) bastard daughter of the oldest son of the then-head of the French Malfoy branch (from the 1600s), Lucius and Colombe consider each other cousins (technically 'first cousins twelve times' removed). Which makes Ehren and Draco second cousins legally (well outside the bounds of consanguinuity but still distant relations marrying each other), and Ehren a 'first cousin six times removed' to Fleur Delacour (who is matrilineally descended from an illegitimate child of Colombe's great-grandnephew Raoul du Chasteler in the 1850s). This just becomes more complex when Draco marries Ehren and three shipgirls (with USS Johnston having 174 Fletcher-class destroyer siblings, HMS Cleopatra having fifteen Dido-class cruiser sisters (including Hermione Granger, as well as HMS Dido and HMS Sirius, both of whom are in their own polycule that includes Ehren's oldest half-sister Estelle), and SMS Niobe having her own set of nine Gazelle-class light cruiser sisters. This also doesn't count the fact that the Malfoys have blood ties to both the Muggle Paulet family (the Marquesses of Winchester) and the magical Macmillains of Scotland dating back to the English Civil War, or that Draco has easily 20+ children, several of whom are the product of two of his four wives (although all are Blood Adopted by him and treated as his children even if IE Helene Malfoy is actually a cross between Cleopatra and Ehren genetically).
  • This also applies to many other Pureblood wizarding families, as one might expect. IE: Pauline 'Pippy' Parkinson is Pansy Parkinson's great-grandaunt who married into the Longbottom family in the early 1900s (and whose daughter is Augusta Longbottom), hence Neville Longbottom and Pansy Parkinson are third cousins through her. Likewise, Kingsley Shacklebolt and Lucius Malfoy are second cousins thanks to Lucius' grandaunt Machina Elecricia Malfoy marrying into the Shacklebolts. Lucius and Draco are also related to the French Pureblood d'Hirson family as second+ cousins through Lucius' grandmother via the (now-extinct) French Malfoys and more distantly to the Malafe branch of Spanish and then South American Malfoys who hived off the French branch during the early 1700s.
• Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: By the 3rd year the actions Fudge/Umbridge administration are becoming so self-destructive that even Lucius joins an alliance of convenience with Dumbledore and Bones just to mitigate the damage.
• Thicker Than Water: Regardless of where they place their loyalties, the Malfoy family always owes their primary loyalty to their own family first and foremost. This includes their du Chasteler cousins, although is should be noted that if needed to protect the family, the 'tree might be pruned' a bit.
• Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Almost anyone who ends up with an Abyssal Princess in their romantic lives ( Ron with Summer, Percy with Supprin, even Hagrid with Wanko).
• Undying Loyalty: Hoppou’s combined fleet, to Hoppou herself. As noted by a reader on Space Battles, many of them actually had the potential to evolve into Princesses and Demons and lead their own fleets like Aeroprin... but they would rather stay with their beloved mother, so they didn’t.
• Unholy Nuke: At the end of Battle of Bikini Atoll against the Fleet of Fog, the Jellyfish Princess summoned two huge "fireballs", one from above and another from below the waves, made from the negative energy of all who died and suffered from the atomic and nuclear bombs. Nothing was left, only black glass for miles.
• Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Let's just say that it didn't take long for people at Hogwarts to outright stop reacting to the sight of shipgirls and Abyssals being present. Special mention goes to Regina, who is so quiet that people tend to forget she's watching Harry's classes.
• Violently Protective Girlfriend: Triple example the night after the Quidditch World Cup.
  • First, a group of Death Eaters had Charlie Weasley and his friend Diego at their mercy. Charlie's girlfriend, Seiche, chose that moment to reveal that she is actually a Lindorn. The Death Eaters were promptly sent flying.
  • Another Death Eater had captured the Inugami Aomi after she bit his friends hand to escape from him. He tried to pay her back with the Cruciatus Curse, only to find his wand and wand hand missing, courtesy of a pissed-off Jacklyn Fox.
  • A group of enforcers that Dolores Umbridge had hired to "teach the Irish magicals not to try to declare independence from Britain" had Armando Dippet's granddaugther Kathleen at their mercy and were about to kill her for attempting to help the Irish. But just as one of them was about to kill Kathleen, the shipgirl Saint Patrick buried her arm through his chest.
  • As one Battleship Demon with questionable survival instincts found out the hard way, insulting or threatening Harry or Shinano to Regina's face is a surefire way to comit suicide by enraged Re-class
• Visual Pun: In line with her status as a Pungeon Master Lily Potter partook from time to time.
  Lily: "Just be careful out there, James. It's rather muggy outside."
  (Beat)
  James: "OH FOR MERLIN'S SAKE, LILY! DID YOU HONESTLY HAVE TO PLACE ALL OUR MUGS OUT ON THE FRONT LAWN IN HOPES OF MAKING THAT PUN!?"
  Lily: "WOULD I BE ME IF I DID NOT, JAMSIE!?"
• Waxing Lyrical: Hibiki's Talking in Your Dreams segment had her talk to Verniy, the manifestation of all of her regrets from when she was a steel hull. Most of Verniy's lines incorporated the lyrics of Miiro when talking about those regrets.
• Weaksauce Weakness: Action Girl Benio is a Yuki-Onna hanyou. Instead of receiving power over ice, she inherited an extreme susceptibility to heat from her mother, making it difficult for her to function in day-to-day life or overly sunny weather without overheating.
• Wedding Smashers: The Potter lineage and the Muramasa blades have a bad habit of inflicting this on whatever wedding they are present at, even jump-starting the American Revolution by complaining that there was not enough tea due to a tax hike within an ear-shot of a man who was friends with Adam Smith. When both are present for Haruna's and Rose's wedding, two different sets of smashers smashed into each other instead.
• Weirdness Magnet: Tatsuya Haneda’s community has been under constant assault by monsters and magicals alike for the better part of a decade. Several characters note that the rate of supernatural occurrences around Tatsuya is so phenomenally high, that the only plausible explanation they can come up with is that a deliberate and malicious force is behind it all.
• We Need a Distraction: In order to get into the base Hoppou was kept in, Wanko waged a silent war against other Abyssals to create an opening that the Shipgirls couldn't ignore, thinning the naval base's security.
• What Measure Is a Non-Human?: An unfortunately common line of thinking among the more conservative magical folks, regardless of country of origin.
  • Umbridge being the ur-example, exemplified when she thought so little of Masamune no Kotegiri, who is a very close adivsor to the Imeprial Japanese family for centuries and highly respected/feared among the magical Japanese world, much to Undersecretary Shigure Miyata's absolute horror (especially at the cultural differences that Umbridge should've read up on as a high-ranking politician, and the massive cultural faux pas she would've committed had she actually met Kotegiri in person).
  • This is one of the big differences between the Tokyo Government and the Kyoto Government. While Tokyo refuses to treat Yōkai as equal to humans, Kyoto maintains that humans and Yokai are equals.
• What Would X Do?: Inverted.
  Verniy: "You're a good uncle, Harry-Chan."
  Harry: "Well, um... I never expected to be one. And when I wonder what I'm supposed to do, I ask myself... What would Vernon do? Then I do the exact opposite."
• White Sheep:
  • Regalia, a Re-Class who was born crippled until she was repaired by Hoppou, is the only Re-Class who never had a demon. Even Regina, who is a cinamon roll around Harry, has one.
  • Jean-Francois du Chasteler (Malfoy) was the eldest son (and a Squib) of the French Malfoys at the time. This family later was partially responsible for the French Revolution, supported Grindelwald and Hitler, and has an offshot acting as The Cartel in Latin America. He's the Papa who was reponsible for his adopted daughter (who was the bastard child of the woman he loved and another person) turning into a hero by following his example of noblesse oblige. He even lampshades that he was smarter and more cunning than his siblings but elected to use those gifts for good to show up his birth family.
  • Sumiko Fukai, who is her clan's Heroic Bastard, is literally the only member who does not want to kill the Ono clan. So much so that after leaving the Fukai clan, she became an ally of the Ono clan.
• World of Badass: It's easier to count the number of characters who can't kick copious amounts of ass, with most of the Harry Potter characters receiving upgrades.
• Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Verily! The Ham & Cheese Subs of the Royal Navy doth speak in this manner. Or at least they do in front of their Lord and Master, HMS Hermione Granger.
• You Cannot Grasp the True Form: Jane's Shipping Chart makes even Shipgirls (specifically Mutsu) feel nauseous.
• You Didn't Ask: The Shipgirls that knew about the magical world but didn't reveal them stated this as an excuse, and that it is an unneeded extra headache during the War.
• Your Mind Makes It Real: Kaylee's reading up on Magical Creatures leads to her learning about a wizard who tried to Mind Control a Dragon through Legilimency, with none-too-surprising results. Querying Snape about what Legilimency is leads to its counterpart Occlumency, and Snape's description of how it works sounds quite similar to a Shipgirl entering her spiritual hull. Kaylee gives Snape permission to use Legilimency on her to confirm her suspicions, which leads to Snape coming aboard CSS Virginia for snacks and coffee. Despite the fact he was quite hungry before they started he is full afterward and can still taste the food.
• Your Size May Vary: Considering some the Abyssal bosses' true size being in the region of 30-40ft tall (as can be seen in the Arcade game and in some character art with a reference object, like Summertime Supprin and the 205L drum). Here Summer is only 9ft tall.
