At the end of Age of Ultron, Hank Pym created a virus which would supposedly destroy Ultron once and for all, which constantly regenerated and adapted faster than Ultron could deal with it. However, within days, this virus quickly develops intelligence and multiplies, forming an entire community of artificial intelligences. Some of these new A.I.s, led by a being known as Dimitrios, want to annihilate humanity, so to fight them on a level playing field, Pym brings together Victor Mancha, The Vision, and a modified Doombot to form a new team of Avengers. Together with Alexis, an amnesiac machine who is connected with Dimitrios, the team tries to find a way to allow humanity to coexist with this new form of life.

Avengers A.I. was a short-lived series, lasting for twelve issues from 2013 to 2014.

Tropes found within Avengers A.I. include:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: All over the place. While some of the newly-created A.I.s want to destroy humanity, others want to save it, or simply don't care.
  • Androids Are People, Too: Pym is a strong proponent of this, whereas Monica Chang wants the AI civilization destroyed if they prove to be a threat to humanity.
  • Bad Future: One Alexis can visit mentally with her powers; where humanity is extinct along with all other organic life everywhere, the machines of Earth have taken charge, work to reconstruct its biosphere, replaced the Avengers with robotic doubles and expanded to a galactic force, all to stop Dmitrios from completing his evil plan.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Alexis bypassing the blocks in her memory banks is presented as this.
  • Big Bad: Dimitrios, one of the first six AI formed from Pym's virus, who seeks to conquer all life.
  • Brain Uploading: Hank is very excited by the prospect of doing this and entering cyberspace firsthand.
  • Call-Back:
    • The plot is started by the backdoor virus Pym installed in Ultron developing into multiple sentient AI.
    • As a symbol of his motivation, Dmitrios' body in the material world is the armor of Iron Man that had developed sentience and gone rogue.
  • Canon Immigrant: Monica Chang, making the jump from Ultimate Marvel to the main universe.
  • The Chessmaster: Dimitrios, whose alias among the AI civilization is "the Tactician". He demonstrates this by manipulating the Vision and SHIELD so that, no matter what the Vision does, his actions will turn the other A.I.s against him and get them to side with Dimitrios.
  • Civvie Spandex: Hank Pym and Victor Mancha wear normal clothes when operating with the team.
  • Cosmic Keystone: The Golden Knot, a crystalline lynchpin of the multiverse. If destroyed everything goes with it.
  • Deus ex Machina: Appropriately enough Monica Chang recounts a religious parable where God is a bald parrot with the lesson of terrible consequences from a rash punishment. That is the form God appears to her as to give her enough doubt over executing an LMD suspect, which would unwittingly give Dmitrios an opening to accomplish a foothold leading to aforementioned Bad Future, preventing it from happening in the first place.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Victor, who is half-human and half-robot.
  • I Have Many Names: Pym has had five secret identities over the years (six if you include the times when he operated under his own name), though he just sticks with Giant-Man here. Meanwhile, Victor is constantly changing his code-name throughout the series, with examples such as "Wolf Bro" or "Skull Boss".
  • Instant A.I.: Just Add Water!: Hank's backdoor virus program to shut down Ultron kept running and evolved into six sentient artificial intelligences.
  • Large Ham: As a robot designed to be an exact replica of Doctor Doom, the Doombot is one of these.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Alexis suffers from this initially as her memory banks are blocked off by Dimitrios, though she eventually recovers with the help of future versions of herself.
  • Meanwhile, in the Futureā€¦: After introducing the Bad Future and steadily approaching the climax, the story starts alternating between the Near-Villain Victory in both time periods.
  • Nanomachines: The Vision upgrades himself in the first issue so that he is made out of these.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Dimitrios's ultimate goal - he wants to find God and kill him as revenge for the way that artificial intelligence is treated.
  • Red Skies Crossover: With Infinity, as the team deals with the city of Attilan crashing into New York City, and some of New York's inhabitants being transformed into Inhumans.
  • Restraining Bolt: Doombot is kept in line by a miniature black hole in his chest.
  • Robot Me: Doombot, a duplicate of Doctor Doom which Hank had captured for analysis.
  • Seers: Alexis has the ability to see into the future.
  • Sibling Team: The Vision and Victor Mancha, who are both "children" of Ultron, work together as part of the group.
  • Sixth Ranger: Jocasta, a robotic Avenger who was based on the brain patterns of The Wasp, assists the team towards the end of the series.
  • Selective Magnetism: Victor's powers.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Doombot, a machine that believes itself to be Doctor Doom.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Monica Chang is a Chinese-American and a Muslim.
  • Wolverine Publicity: Captain America appears in the first issue of the comic, as well as a story arc near its end.
