Whether that's a virus, drug or vaccine being injected, it's proof that he's not a corpse, so technically alive.
And it actually shows the zombie.

Maybe something from The Crazies (2010)? They use weapons and pretty sadistic tactics. This first one is using a garrote.
I was tempted to just use the bottom panel, since the mom is using a gun and tied up one of the main characters as very un-zombilike behaviour, but the son in that scene is much more clearly infected.

My issue with all the ones suggested is that other that Drope's in 8 all of these people could be dead, nothing about them screams "not actually undeath, it's some sort virus or mass mind control spell, etc." and even 8 is kinda weak at most because I didn't parse the character as a zombie like creature at first.
These might be a bit weak but they show zombie like people strapped up to heart monitors showing their hearts are still beating?
