WesternAnimation Hulk vs...Is this the best Marvel Animation can offer?
Hulk vs. Wolverine.
The only interest here is the fight. A three minute battle showing the differences between the two battle wise that has a quick, smooth flow and enough variety to keep interest. Each gets their licks in before an abrupt ending. The rest tends to be fairly boring as the Hulk casually destroys Weapon X's members. A few memorable lines from Deadpool and other moments scattered throughout. Worth a rental, but not ownership for anyone besides a Hulk or Wolverine fan. Yost and Kyle have a strong affinity for Wolverine and it shows, but this is too short to have anything really come of it, but did we really need Wolverine's origin told again?
Hulk vs. Thor
Attempted to have a more complex storyline and character driven, but fails miserable. It's to short to fully develop or delve into the back stories of any of the characters or story plots. For the introduction to Thor it is lacking. Cameos of characters are thrown in with no reference to who they are, importance, or anything beyond the superficial facts of relationships. The story suffers from several severe deviations from the comics including Thor tired of battle and being afraid of the Hulk.
The fight itself is a severe disappointment. Instead of an epic clash it is a one-sided beat down. Thor and Hulk come off as clunky and sluggish. Thor barely fights back instead either laying there as a punching bag or running into the Hulk's fist. For a six-minute fight it is extremely boring. The rest is Hulk casually tearing through whatever Asgardians is thrown against him. Never once is he seriously challenged or in danger. An excuse is made for this being a stronger Hulk, but it does not excuse Thor's poor performance of barely fighting back at all. I actually fast forwarded past parts of it.
A quest angle about Banner is thrown it to try and fill up the pitiful story. By the end you can tell they are just going through the motions with an anti-climatic ending.
Yost and Kyle do not have an affinity for the character which is shown in the commentary. Joking throughout and snarky remarks, they state outright they made this so Banner is praised as hero to show Thor how to be a real hero. They made Banner the hero of the piece instead of Thor.
Animation inconsistent with being good or bad.
Worth it for Hulk fans, but lacking for everyone else.
WesternAnimation The title says it all.
Hulk vs. is a mixed bag. In some ways, of all the Marvel direct-to-dvd animated films it has some of the best writing and production values as seen by the animation. In other ways it is a disappointment and still pales when compared to anything DC has put out. It is inaccurate to call this a feature length-film. Once credits are removed each is about as long as a half-our cartoon. The point of both is not the story, but the battle.
Hulk vs Wolverine is the better of the two shorts. The battle between the two puts in a good showing for both of them with the Hulk's brute strength vs Wolverine's speed. However, it starts to lag about halfway through with another pointless retelling of Wolverine's origin. Watching the Hulk casually destroy Weapon X members has some entertainment value, but ends right before it gets old because nothing can threaten him.
Hulk vs. Thor is the longer, but weaker of the segments. The writers try to give a bit more of a story, but fail to develop any of those story parts. Thor's weariness of battle is out of character. Worse, all the fights involving the Hulk are boring and get old fast. The Hulk with ease plows through armies of gods and frost giants that gets old fast. Worse, the much anticipated fight with Thor is a let down as Thor does not bother to fight back half the time. Unlike the Wolverine fight the Thor fight is so one-sided one quickly loses any interest unless you either hate Thor or want to see the Hulk bulldoze across Asgard. Loki's lackluster contribution towards the end shows the writers were going through the motions in the last few minuets. Unlike Hulk vs Wolverine that tried to show respect for fans of both characters Hulk vs Thor tries to promote the Hulk and Banner as either unstoppable for the former or a great hero for the latter at the cost of Thor and his entire world. All in all, it is plain boring.
In the end, worth renting to see once, but unless you are a die-hard Hulk fan or hate Thor then it is not worth buying.
