Reviews: Yuri Lowenthal

A good actor, all things considered

Yuri Lowenthal is a good actor, maybe he doesn't have the greatest range, but hell, he gives his roles a lot of emotion, depth and character to some pretty dull roles coughSasukecough. This makes his typecasting especially painful, he deserves more then being cast as just another Kid Hero. Don't get me wrong, I loved Simon and I believe he's great as the Noble Demon Washui and will look forward to seeing him do more acting like that.

I guess this trend comes from executives seeing Yuri Lowenthal, take a look at his resume and think, "Kid Hero, maybe The Lancer." And go with that. I'm sure he enjoys it, and I don't think he should have to change from his bread and butter, but if we saw some variance from not only him, but a lot more really good actors out there. I want to see more of Steve Blum as comic relief or other non badasses, he's great at it. Or maybe a Travis Willingham role that isn't Tall Dark And Handsome and whose Authority Equals Asskicking, he does that very well, but I'm sure he can different things equally good. Its a dissonance, you have actors like Luci Christian, who can do a lot very well, or the slightly less varied Vic Mignogna, who are slightly more well known then these other actors, yet they're given a veritable cornucopia or characters while others are handed the same model with a different color.

Hopefully this is a thing of the past as we now have actors like J Michael Tatum, who's done nearly everything, and Johnny Yong Bosch, who has broken free from The Messiah and moved towards the Magnificent Bastard. I hope this trend continues.
