The latest entry in Dan Abnett's Inquisitor series, Pariah, begins with a bit of a mind screw that I found off-putting, namely the protagonist, Alizabeth "Beta" (I couldn't help mentally calling her "Betty" for some reason) Bequin. Is this her secret backstory? What's going on here? That gets explained later; long story short, it's not quite the same Bequin! Anyway, the fact that you spend most of the book away from the established characters in the series was a bit annoying to me. ...okay, I admit it, I was mentally screaming "But what happened to RAVENOR?! Waaaah! D_:" But in spite of that, it is interesting to see things from Beta's point of view and piece things together on your own. The plot really begins to pick up after the halfway point. There are several factions at work in the novel, all vying for possession of Beta, each seeking to use her in their own schemes, and from this comes the always well-done action sequences Abnett is known for. In the ending, the characters I had been missing appear, and I can't wait for the next installment.
Literature Ravenor vs. Eisenhorn (minus Ravenor and Eisenhorn)
