Despite being named a classic of Dutch literature, I found this book rather unengaging, though to its credit it has decent thematic work.
It just isn't very enjoyable, plain and simple. That being said, some of the descriptions of the life the protagonist is living *are* enjoyable - it just never lasts very long.
The ending parts feel rushed. Another couple of chapters to space it out would've worked better.
In historic context, however, I have nothing but respect for the author and her accomplishments. But the overall praise this little novel seems to get in the Netherlands is a little extreme for what is a relatively minor work.
Literature Slightly overrated.
