FanficRecs Damn yes.
Metisket's rec'd on the pages for multiple works, so this is for all the fandoms she writes for.
If fanfiction as a whole tends to drift towards Draco in Leather Pants, metisket tends to show the sides of characters in the opposite direction. Everyone she writes is slightly more bombastic, slightly more unhinged, slightly more intense than expected.
It's. Brilliant?
The beautiful art to this approach is that this author never works with anything that isn't already there in the characters' motivations. She just focuses in on the way characters already want to take over the world, or don't care about getting hurt, or miss the point of a social norm. It's all very clever, very nicely written, and rings with the truth of the pieces she's writing for. She likes to play with outsider points of view, so she can showcase just how unusual our favorite characters are. But when she gets inside their heads, it all makes perfect sense, either understandable or alarmingly like something you would do in the same situation. (She's at her best, I feel, when writing insider and outsider points of view of the same things, when she always works up a marvelous and sensible compare/contrast.)
A lot of metisket's work feels like every line is a particularly insightful gem I should be recording. Her fic hits a facet of the works she writes for you don't see anywhere else, simultaneously cheery and quietly horrifying. She's written the only Avengers fic that's made me believe in Bruce's line about always being angry as anything other than quotable but ultimately meaningless shock fodder. She showcases why people find protagonists like Ed and Yoshimori and Stiles and Allen, and Hikaru, and Tsuna, alarming. It's refreshing, and it would still be an interesting interpretation if it weren't. Her take on side characters is just as great.
She mostly writes for manga fandoms, which generally have a dearth of English fanfic (and by extension, quality English fanfic).
I enjoy reading her works again and again, part palette cleanser, part intricate mental puzzle box. Metisket's great, basically.
FanficRecs Recommended 1000%. Yes, it is THAT good.
Morbid humor? Check. Non-morbid humor? Check. Secretly batshit crazy exorcists? Check. Hell, she makes KANDA look like the sane one. Yes. Kanda. The sane one. You read that right.
Wait til you see her version of batshit crazy Lenalee. You will laugh. You will cry. And you will end up absorbing that into your headcanon no matter how much you want to write a happy D.Gray-man fic.
Her batshit crazy Allen is awesome too. Better than Lenalee, but then again it's somehow easier to absorb batshit crazy Allen than Lenalee. I dunno, maybe it's just me. And her LAVI. God. I love it all.
I spent DAYS reading all her works. Not that many, but more than enough to make you feel satisfied. Her writing style is the kind that can make you giggle uncontrollably during math class, at the same time make you lock yourself in your room weeping for an hour. And let's not forget the humor. God, I love her humor. One day I want to write something like she does. One day.
Once again, read it. Read her works. You will not regret it, believe me.
If that isn't enough to make you read, how about this?
Circus exorcists.
Enjoy~
FanficRecs Just ... yes.
What are you doing reading the reviews? Go read the fanfics. Now.
If you've already done that I can tell you I spent a couple of days reading all the fanfics from the series I've read/watched and then a couple of more days just hoping more fics would spontaniously materialize or that I'd missed one.
There were fics I didn't think I would like but tried anyway and well ... shows what I know I guess 'cause I loved them too.
The great thing is that the fics are often heartbreaking but still have some really good humor in them. The characters often put in some humorous self-depricating narration so you end up laughing and crying at the same time. Her D.Gray-man fics are especially great and so are her FMA fics (especially since I've had trouble finding fics set in the mangaverse).
