FanFicRecs If Dark Fics are your thing, you'll love this
Adam Kadmon is, IMO, the master of NGE Dark Fics, mainly because he has a gift for depicting psychological trauma that few others can touch. This is the crown jewel of his resume. It's incredibly bleak and depressing, but is still a strong story because of how deeply it gets into the characters' heads and hearts. You don't just see how much they've been broken, you viscerally feel it. Also, the fic doesn't shy away from depicting the characters doing horrible things because of what they've been through. It doesn't try to create a false sense of sympathy or excuse anything that happens; what happens happens and is laid bare for the reader to absorb and deal with. I give this a strong recommendation, but I'd advise you to be prepared to spend some time recovering when you're finished.
FanficRecs Well done, certainly, but...
I admire this Adam Kadmon fic for the writing. Despite sometimes using overly flowery prose, and having a couple of misspelled words (hey, bet you can't write an 83,598 word fic without misspelling at least two), the execution on a whole is stellar. The ony problem is the conceptualization. Of course, YMMV, but I disagreed strongly with what he did to two characters: Kensuke and Asuka are depicted in ways that just don't feel right to me. The depiction of Shinji as a broken... thing... who's endlessly guilty over the people he got killed was very well done, and I can believe Mana as a former spy turned sympathetic ear, and most of the other characters get so little screen time that they're hardly worth mentioning, but something about Askua and Kensuke's depictions (perhaps not coincidentally, the two most grotesque ones in the fic) chafed. Certainly, I applaud Kadmon's writing skills, but I can't fully recommend the work itself. Warning: Contains serious nightmare fuel, far more so than the original series.
