This fic really drew me in, especially with its interesting enough premise. What if Nightmare Moon had won against Celestia? Take note that I am largely unfamiliar with the MLP verse, so I didn't expect myself to like it that much, actually. But I do. The fic has excellent worldbuilding under the Empress' rule who is more benevolent than she seems. In fact, this fic is similar to that of Prince of the Dark Kingdom from the HP fandom, which may be part of the reason why I like it. But it's not just some rehash, as it can be fresh and original while still invoking a sense of familiarity and nostalgia. The characters are intriguing, especially the Inquisitor and Duke Blueblood. I can sense some Lucius Malfoy-ish mannerism coming from the latter.
But more than ten chapters in, and I can't really say that much has happened. Like the aforementioned fic, Night's Favoured Child is more thought provoking than anything else. Yet somehow all the events seem connected, and it feels a lot like a clever set-up for something huge to happen later. Like a war or something, but I could be wrong. Just...something big. The descriptions are vivid and how the author writes Twilight Sparkle's mindset as a foal of not yet ten manages to be just right, as in not too mature and not too childish at the same time.
Overall, this fic is a recommendation from me. Go read it!
