One of the best Deconstructions ever
'Sympathy for Mr Vengeance' is one of the few cynical films that manages to be depressing without having to rely on a Diabolus Ex Machina or on an exaggerated portrayal of humans as bastards to build up drama. The first half of the film is full of Hope Spots, and the destruction of this hope spots are what makes the movie so depressing. The characters are flawed enough to be realistic, yet, with the exception of the organ dealers, lovable enough to make their misery tragic. Their motives are understandable and even though all main characters commit terrible crimes, they never go to the point where you would cheer for their death. All in all, 'Sympathy for Mr Vengeance' is the best Deconstruction of the Cycle Of Revenge Trope that I've ever seen.
Though I didn't think it was bad, I thought this was the weakest of the Vengeance trilogy. I think it is because of the switch in focus from the protagonist to the antagonist about half way through. The antagonist had little screen time or characterisation before his story becomes important, so it is harder to sympathise with his admittably tragic circumstances.
