Y'know they're not meant to be portrayed as heroes, right? They're survivors in a post-apocalyptic world. Look at films or shows like Mad Max or Walking Dead where there aren't heroes, just people trying to live.

What Vanguard 1505 said. They're not heroes, they're pretty explicitly stated to be mercenaries. Think more like Black Lagoon or Firefly, but with an MLP twist.

I don't recognize these characters
The characterization of the mane six who have appeared so far is horrific. They've all been turned into complete psychopaths. So far Spike has had two ponies threaten to hurt/kill him, one repeatedly, and the only one to treat him with any decency so far is Fluttershy. Rarity, in the meanwhile, has drowned an entire ship full of sailors, the most horrible way someone can die, because a bullet put a hole in her boot. Yeah, some heroes.
