A basic formula series that continues to drag along

(Read up to chapter 150)

Nisekoi is as basic as a romantic comedy can come by. It has everything you would expect regarding cliches that have been seen throughout this genre, from the gullible main male character, to his love triangle between a Tsundere and a Shrinking Violet, to having a male comedic best friend, and so on. The one thing this series has going for it is the hilarious facial expressions seen amongst it's characters, and even that has been kinda lackluster as of late.

Early on, the story of the Childhood Marriage Promise has a lot of time dedicated to it, and has a lot of readers invested as to who it was that Raku made the promise with, but it becomes very apparent that it was used as an excuse plot only to get you interested in this universes' setting. Once it's been established with all the characters in place, the series then turns into a formula series that mostly continues with one-off chapters containing overused Harem shenanigans seen throughout manga. Once in awhile, it returns to the Marriage Promise (Yui's introduction being the big one), and dedicates a chapter here-and-there to push forward the Shuu and Ruri shipping, but aside from that, the manga has continued to drag along with no end in sight.

The anime adaptation is perhaps worth looking into though. It's not everyday you see a Rom-Com done by Shaft Studios, and actually gives the series a unique look compared to other shows from this genre.

I agree with it being an overdone formula that keeps dragging along, but my personal experience with it is pretty much the opposite. I began buying the volumes and almost dropped it by #4 because the plot had been a carbon-copy of Love Hina in every aspect. Once they stopped focusing on it and it turned into a straight-up slice of life harem comedy I started enjoying it much more, enough that I'll keep buying it till the end.

Scolding an ongoing manga for being ongoing is not a good thing, I believe. Any manga is "dragging without an endng in sight" when you wait for it, because it is released 5 minutes of reading per week. My favourite feeling is the one when a good thing ends, be it a movie, a book, a manga, an anime.. So I won't read One Piece or anything like that, because it's doing exactly that: monotonely dragging along.

While it is true that scolding an ongoing manga isn't exactly fair, its fair to say that the "filler" chapters being used to drag the series out just aren't the most interesting plot-devices to continue pushing the series along. The biggest offender I can think of are the Tsugumi chapters that always rely on losing an item that causes some kind of problem that is solved by the end of the chapter. It was ok the first time, but definitely wasn't deserving to have multiple re-occurrences.

Nisekoi may just be average, but it managed to have the grace of good timing for its debut, which caused its popularity to skyrocket.
