What exactly WERE IGN's reasons for giving the game an 8.5? They should probably be mentioned when this page brings up IGN's score.

On the YMMV page, it states that C. Tails shows up after the Death Egg Robot boss fight out of nowhere. This is incorrect; he shows up out of nowhere after you beat Green Hill Act 2. Can someone correct that or something?

Well, plot-wise, he first showed up after the Classic Era boss battle, so technically, it's actually correct.

Removed this from the page:

  • Pandering to the Base: The entire reason for Classic Sonic's muteness. Many fans hold the misconception that Sonic's silence in the early games is an innate character trait rather than a result of technological limitations preventing speech inclusion in said games. As a matter of fact, games in the "Classic" era did have Classic Sonic speaking such as Sonic CD and Sega Sonic Arcade. The result complicates Sonic's characterization for no good reason by making his younger self mute, all for the sake of catering to the warped interpretations of him that many fans hold.

I find it rather weird to assume that this trope is the sole reason behind Classic Sonic's muteness.

It is.

Ruby Eclipse hinted here that "Classic fans need not worry" about Classic Sonic speaking, strongly implying that the developers are catering to these fans expectations by catering to their warped interpretations by making Classic Sonic mute - http://www.sonicstadium.org/2011/04/classic-sonic-wont-be-saying-a-word-in-sonic-generations/

The fact that he was specifically asked this question by the fanbase is good evidence for the prevalence and deepness of this false belief. Fanbase-pandering remains the only viable reason as to why Sonic Team made Classic mute because he was perfectly capable of making coherent sentences back in the old days. It's catering to a warped interpretation from PURELY a technical limitation rather than a stated aspect of the character because Classic's muteness back then stemmed from technical limitations and is not an aspect of Sonic's innate characterization as indicated by Sonic's outspoken and extroverted manner when it was feasible to have spoken lines in games.

Nowhere is it ever stated that Sonic Team made Classic Sonic mute as a kind of mythology gag pertaining to his silence purely as a result of technical limitation when that design was prevalent, reinforcing the "Pandering to the Base" thing even more.

Ah, if that's the case, then I'll gladly add it back in. Thanks for the explanation.
