  • Harsher in Hindsight: During Civil War II, Carol Danvers' complete disregard for legal precepts of Habeas Corpus, Actus Reus and Mens Rea — not to mention the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments to the US Constitution — are hard to swallow given the concern of the erosion of civil rights that have happened since the days of 9/11.

The main problem with that entry is that the 9/11 took place in 2001, and Civil War II in 2016. 15 years afterwards. It's after both the main event and the consequentes of it (patriot act, war on terror, etc). Check again the trope definition: "Harsher in Hindsight is a serious event, plotline, or comment where a later event (in the story or real life) comes up and only serves to amplify the already bitter-tasting effect" (bolding by me). If the event took place so long before, then it's not that. It may be Does This Remind You of Anything?, but this case is not that either, as it is just a broad General Ripper general portrayal, with nothing that sets an actual similarity with the 9/11.

A Does This Remind You of Anything? might work better — but it's not 9/11 in and of itself, but it's what happened because of 9/11 that is the focus of the trope, ie: things like the surveillance programs implemented as a result of 9/11 or detaining suspects for years at a time in black sites or even guantanamo bay.

So yeah, Carol disregarding the precepts of Habeas Corpus, Actus Reus and Mens Rea, as well as many amendments, is well... what happens when civil liberties are eroded/

Actually, the issue of turning down civil liberties for a swift government or keeping them at the cost of an increased bureaucracy is as old as civil liberties themselves. Even the first Roman dictators were motivated by this, so this issue is Older Than Feudalism. So no, it does not remind me of the aftermath of the 9/11, not without something more specific.

There's the scene of that office worker that was arrested cuz Carol thought she was gonna bomb her building — that's a whole War on Terror thing.
