On the "Values Dissonance" entry of the YMMV page, the poster states that a society without camera phones would not have believed any allegations against the Trunchbull because they were simply too farfetched.

I'm guessing that poster never heard of the Mc Martin preschool trial.

In arguably the most prominent example of an intense moral panic over alleged abuse of children at daycare centers, the Mc Martin family and other school employees were hit with increasingly bizarre allegations of molestation, animal mutilation and Satanic ritual abuse. Yet the parents, and society at large, believed all the allegations hook, line and sinker. It didn't matter that the initial accuser was an alcoholic paranoid schizo who was accusing everyone left and right of molesting her son. It didn't matter that the "confessions" from the children were clearly coerced through suggestive interrogation techniques. It didn't matter there wasn't a shred of corroborating evidence to all these claims; people believed the ludicrous charges.

And that was in the mid 1980s, long before camera phones.

It's been fairly long since last time I watched the movie, but to my understandong the Real Life instances when shady practices in schools were reported and made public were, in the decades prior to 1990, few and far in-between. The Mc Martin incident was one of them... but there aren't many other cases that publicly recordedat the time. It is possible that some of them were exposed in the following decades when proof surfaced, though.

In any case, feel free to bring this issue in the Is This An Example thread in the forums. This Discussion page is unfortunately buggy, and right now it is not the most recommended venue for article discussions.

Anyone else just realize that Matilda is basically an aged-down version of Carrie if her Parental Issues were neglect- rather than abuse-based? Oh, and if she were in a more World Half Full setting?

Both characters are fully unrelated since they're from fully unrelated works by fully unrelated authors. If you really, really feel like pointing out this similarity, do so in Surprisingly-Similar Stories.

EDIT: And by the way, yes, they do have things in common tropologically speaking, but that's it.
