Should the Wham Episode page be Spoilers Off? That trope seems inherently spoilerish by definition.

Just a little housekeeping: you can now get the volumes in digital, including the prequels or whatever they're called. The main page should be updated to reflect this (sorry, first time here, heading to the how-to asap).

On the main trope page, the image as Elan remarking, "Look Roy! a monkey." I have puzzled over that every time I open this page and I still can't figure it out. What does it mean?

I can't say I'm not disappointed. I was hoping it would be some kind of clever way of breaking the fourth wall, showing Elan pointing at something on my operating system or browser.

It's taken from the OOTS page on Ookoodook. Unfortunately, with the page layout, Elan is not currently pointing in the right direction.

Given we now know the name of Tarquin's adventuring Party (The Vector Legion, from Word of God), the Empire of Blood character sheet should probably be updated to "The Empire of Blood and the Vector Legion"

Soooooo quick question. Go to strip 411, look at the fifth panel. There is very clearly... something in the single sapphire, and if I had to make a guess, it'd be the same thing that Blackwing saw through the rift in 672, and was glimpsed again by the rest of the party in 900. It certainly looks like the same thing, but I haven't seen / heard any mention of it on TV Tropes. Anyone care to explain?

I dunno, it looks almost... round. I think that it's more of a Rewatch Bonus, in that it could be passed off as the gate itself when they're glimpsing it through the sapphire, but after reading through the entire comic two or three times, I can't help but feel there's something a teensy bit more to it.

Am I the only one who thinks that the part where it says "set in a world based on Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 Edition rules (an original world, rather than an established setting)" should be changed? The Giant has made it clear that he has been moving away from the actual rules so as to have more creative freedom.

The world is still based on the rules, and as I recall, he has said that he'll ignore the rules for plot or humor, not that he's going to be moving away from them entirely.

I have added a page quote, with a dialogue coming from On the Origin of PCs. It stays open to suggestion if someone can find one more fitting, but I think it gives a good, short description of the party as such.

Time to bicker a bit: I see a lot of mentions of this or Start of Darkness, without spoilers, in webcomic sections. I do find that annoying since I'm all read up on the website part, but not on the print-only variety (can't get it here either, for silly yet obstructive reasons). It'd be nice if those didn't get mixed up so much. And in a sense, print-only material is not webcomic material; it has its own section.

If it's not intentional, it's not a Shout-Out. From what I understand, the term Lampshade Hanging predates TV Tropes use of it, but no doubt the term has become popularized by it.

MrDeath Since: Aug, 2009

It's lampshading the act of lampshading. Even if it doesn't have anything to do with TV Tropes, that's still what they're doing.

Did you read my last post? There is no lampshading to lampshade, only a Visual Pun. Or do you mean that any reference to Lampshade Hanging lampshades itself?

According to the definition of Lampshade Hanging, it " is the writers' trick of dealing with any element of the story that threatens the audience's Willing Suspension of Disbelief — whether a very implausible plot development, or a particularly blatant use of a trope — by calling attention to it... and then moving on.". In this case, the particular trope is hanging a Lampshade on the fact that it is an unbelievably stupid idea that "generations of paladins have willfully sabotaged their own ability to perform their duties for a silly promise". This act of hanging a Lampshade is then lampshaded by an actual lampshade being hanged. So, there is something to lampshade - a very implausible plot development, just like in the definition - and this lampshading is lampshaded. Seems like it passes to me.

I propose a High Octane Nightmare Fuel page for Order Of The Stick.

Start of Darkness:

  • On the very first page, we see Xykon as a little boy crying over his dead dog, and accidentally bringing it back to life with his necromancy. It then proceeds to kill a bird and visibly eat its brains, to Xykon's delight.
  • Xykon transforming into a Lich, and ripping off his flesh as he undergoes the process.
  • Xykon killing Lirian, trapping her soul in a gem, and forcing her to watch as he proceeds to zombiefy her body.
  • Redcloak, at Xykon's command, killing his brother Right Eye, and then zombiefying his body. Simply because he felt that Xykon's survival was necessay for the good of the goblin people. Made even worse when you realize that Xykon was just testing Redcloak's loyalty, and that Right Eye would have been incapable of killing Xykon.
Order Of The Stick:
  • Thog. Because of his child-like innocence as he goes around killing people, mixed his love for puppies and ice cream, is a prime source of Nightmare Fuel.
  • Vaarsuvius's acceptance of the Soul Splice, subsequent rather evil actions, then the revelation that the soul splice had no effect on V's morality, merely his/her power, and that was what V really wanted to do.

There will be other examples, I'm sure.

I moved the subjectives to the YMMV tab. For some reason, the site's not logging edit reasons at the moment, but I just wanted to let anyone who saw it know that I didn't just go on a mass deletion spree. Although, with some of them, they do raise the question of what to do with innately subjective tropes that are intentionally used in-universe? Or is that just a misuse of the trope in the first place? Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped definitely doesn't seem like it belongs at all. And the You Fail Economics Forever example looks like it could qualify for Insane Troll Logic. Anyway...

Courtesy of Fighteer:

"We have a Fridge namespace for this. Put it there."

Where exactly is this page? Is it just Fridge/OrderOfTheStick? If so, there didn't appear to be anything on that page when I visited just a moment ago; does this mean that, if we want that page to exist, we should feel free to start it?

Forgive my ignorance, but with so many things changing on the wiki as of late, I wasn't even aware we had a Fridge namespace, much less how to use it.

After strip #723 I made an edit noting, after the "Fanon" entry about the "Elan's father = Tyrinar" theory, that it has now been Jossed with the reveal of Elan's real father. This was removed on the grounds of being "too hasty". Now that #725 is out, can it go back up? Both our own WMG page and the comic's own forums seem to regard it as pretty conclusive by now.

Mr. Scruffy is there, too, immediately begging the question of how he came to be in the main cast considering he was in the strip long before becoming Belkar's animal companion.

Ugh, I tried uploading an alternate image, but it just didn't work. The original pose from the GITP main page would be much better, but it's sized just large enough that the system won't accept it. If anybody with photoshop skills could take a hack at it, it would be just as good as the current image but without the spoilery elements.

Rich specifically said not to read too much into it.

Don't read too much into it. He's the most important non-Good character that is the same size as Belkar, thus keeping the composition of the poster balanced. The fact that he also represents a group that is not associated with either Xykon or the Linear Guild helps.
Really, it was down to either him or the black dragon mother for that top slot, and the dragon is too big and would have blended in with the [Monster in the Darkness] (and is already dead).
