I've recently heard talk of Ganondorf being based on a couple of characters from the Dune series? Specifically the characters Baron Harkonnen and Leto II. Not having any personal knowledge of the Dune books, I was curious if this was an accurate observation of just mere coincidence. I've certainly never seen a comparison of them on this site, and we're usually pretty good about things like that.

  • Diabolus ex Machina: The Master Sword putting Link in a coma, which allows Ganondorf to take the Triforce unopposed. There's zero Foreshadowing that the Master Sword demands an adult wielder Because Destiny Says So, so the whole thing comes out of left field and relies on tenuous logic.

This was removed on the grounds that it was Rauru, not the Master Sword, that sealed Link away. Watching the scene again, the text is "Only one worthy of the title of 'Hero of Time' can pull [the Master Sword] from the Pedestal of Time... However, you were too young to be the Hero of Time... Therefore, your spirit was sealed here for seven years." While vague, this does seem to imply it was the sword/destiny/whatever that did it, and not Rauru. Even if it was Rauru, I still think it counts as a Diabolus ex Machina, as the audience is given no reason to believe that Link won't be able to wield the sword, or that it's the true key to the Sacred Realm.

I think it's an example, but at the same time it needs more of an explanation and just a little bit of the negativity pared down. I'm not sure how to rewrite it, though. Maybe something like this:

  • Diabolus ex Machina: When Link pulls out the Master Sword, it (or possibly Rauru) puts him in a coma until he is an adult, which allows Ganondorf to take the Triforce unopposed. While Rauru claims afterwards that the Sword demands an adult wielder, this is not foreshadowed beforehand, and it is contradicted in both earlier and later games.

I want to add something about the theory that the "Defeat" timeline came about from Link using the Sword as a child and failing, at which point everything was rewound and the coma shoved in as a last-ditch resort, but that's just speculation unless we got a Word of God I didn't notice.

I like that version, Discar. Direct to the point and it also provides additional information on why it's a DEM. That said, I don't think we need to comment on that timeline speculation.

How is it a remake when it still uses the same code as the N64 version and the only thing that is changed is some graphical and model changes? The existing code was modified so that the game would run on the new platform, the existing models were altered with additional polygons and such, etc. Therefore, this is an enhanced port. New code was not written from scratch to create this game. UI is par for the course for any game going to another platform. This is a not a true remake unlike The Twin Snakes or R Emake on the Gamecube. Hell there's not even any new content that many true remakes add to the game to feel more cohesive, like in Soul Silver, Mega Man Powered Up or Maverick Hunter X or Metroid Zero Mission. I just do not agree with the remake label...otherwise this seems like the laziest remake ever.

To be fair it does include the Master Quest campaign which before had only been available on limited Collecter's Edition discs and mirrors the dungeon layouts for added replay value. And it's quite significant to completely redo 2D sprite based background graphics into 3D polygonal backgrounds. If the R Emake had done that, it would have garnered a lot more interest.

Can we get a source on the "Oo T was planned to have Dating Sim elements" trivia, please? I've Google'd until my Googler was sore . . . and I can't find ANYTHING that supports this. Closest I've found were a couple comments saying that they'd "read it somewhere" . . . which I wouldn't be surprised was *here*.

I know we're not formal, and all, but I'd rather not spread misinformation, either. 8~(

I'm pretty sure this is trivia, but I don't know where to put it... it turns out, a clip of the Arabic chanting from the original Fire Temple theme is still used in all versions of Ocarina of Time: it's Bongo Bongo's voice. (Play it faster to hear it properly.)

Can we remove the spoiler tags from this page? I'm asking because after 13 years, at least three major re-releases, and CONSTANT usage in future games, trying to hide anything from this game is just pointless. Thoughts on this?

Every comic is someone's first, every Linkara video is someone's first, and every videogame is someone's first. Ocarina of Time may be 13 years old, but a lot of people haven't played it yet. The recent nature of the 3DS version makes it even easier to experience the game for the first time.

It's not fair that people who haven't been exposed to a certain work be removed from the equation of spoilers because of how popular said work is. Sure, Super Smash Brothers spoils Zelda being Sheik... but it doesn't spoil the quest to gather the Sages, the Deku Tree's death, Navi's disappearance, Ganon's survival of the first battle, or Mido's forgiving of Link.

Also, there are some 30+ year old movie entries that are spoiler-checked, fame notwithstanding (The Thing comes to mind).

Shouldn't we create a page dedicated to the Manga adaptation? I mean, it would neatly separate the game from the manga so we won't have to worry about intermingling non-canon materials with it.

The following entry relating to this game is on Prison Episode:

  • In the Ocarina of Time the Gerudo throw Link into some sort of cell, leaving him all of his equipment, and no matter how many times he escapes and gets caught again, they just throw him back in the same cell. With all of his equipment.

Now, bear in mind that Prison Episode is defined as a prison-centered installment of a series not otherwise about prison; this is more along the lines of a level. In that trope's discussion page, on the other hand, battosaijoe claimed that a level should count if it makes up a significant enough portion of the gameplay, and kjnoren claimed to have looked through the video game section removing the more obvious non-examples.

In any case, would you say it qualifies?

Jack Slate going to prison for for a quarter of the game in Dead to Rights was a Prison Episode. Link getting tossed in jail for 30 seconds every time you screw up a stealth mission? If that counts, then every time anyone is temporarily captured counts.

How frequent is Navi's Anti Poop-Socking message in the 3DS version? (I haven't played that version yet)

The Videogame namespace says it's every 15-20 minutes, while the Character Sheet claims it's one and a half to two hours.

Didn't answer my question at all. Please read it properly. What's the interlude before she said it again? I'm not shelling out hundreds of pounds for a 3DS and game just to fix two vastly different statements.

I'd say it's much closer to an hour interlude, although I haven't ever bothered to keep tack of the number of minutes.

Ok, IIRC Navi has four lines total (Hey, Watch Out, Look, Listen). The middle two are enemy lock on cues nobody remembers, "Hey" is a generic message popup, "Listen" is reading a message. For things Navi locks onto, you're right about a delay while you hit Z to actually put the lock on, but "Hey" is also the message for general quest hints; you can answer those instantly, which is where the classic "Hey, listen!" variant comes from, as most people just press C-up as an immediate response to "Hey."

Probably the best case for Beam Me Up, Scotty! would be Navi says "Listen!" on its own way more often than she says the two together (she does it for every single "there's a trap / thing here" dungeon hint, which you can't ignore), but I don't think it's a particularly solid claim that she never says "Hey, Listen!" just because there's a player action required to get her to say it.

Again, it's doing it for no reason, and doing it constantly, that is the misquoting. The way you fixed it this time is fine, but it's not the pause semantics that I was discussing.

Yeah, I was just a little dubious about whether it was a good example that she didn't say it enough and what enough means; she'll certainly do the rapid "Hey / Listen" a lot of times in most people's games, since she's not exactly shy about telling you you should go to Death Mountain when you're the wrong age and doing something else.

Can you tell I'm currently playing through the game? I'm trying not to add a note that naming Link "Hitler" makes the game absolutely hilarious. :)

Edit: Past tense. Sorry, tired here.

How exactly is the Megaton Hammer "more powerful than the Master Sword"? Certain enemies (e.g. Volvagia) are vulnerable to it and resist the Master Sword, and some others (e.g. Dark Link) have attack patterns that make the Megaton Hammer a more useful weapon, but IIRC against most enemies the Megaton Hammer and the Master Sword do the same amount of damage.

  • Camp Gay: The carpenters prance everywhere

I dunno...not really?

  • and in the future talk about how scary the Gerudo women are.

...they just got thrown into jail after they tried signing up to be thieves. It could be construed as No Guy Wants an Amazon, maybe, but that doesn't really imply they're not interested...

  • One even says Link is cute.

You can still call a man handsome or cute, and not be attracted to them. That's Ambiguous at best.

  • Rated M for Manly: The fight with King Dodongo, when Link, just 11 years old, blasts a dinosaur 50 times his size into a giant pit of lava with bombs and a sword!

Nothing about that really screams Testosterone Poisoning. By this logic, a lot of The Lord of The Rings and Star Wars would be this.

Was this really confirmed? I recall Four Swords Adventures also being a contradictory origin story, but I never played it myself so I can't be sure.

The assumption that Link is a "chick magnet" is questionable, at best. From what I recall, the only girl who expressed romantic interest in him was Ruto; the other girls on the list expressed friendship at most.

Word of God said in 1998 that this was the first game in the Zelda timeline. However, new games have come out since then such as the Four Swords games which have been said to go even earlier. While this is the first game in the main story arc of the series, discounting the Four Swords trilogy that doesn't connect to the other games very well, saying that it is the first game period is technically incorrect.

Eiji Aonuma stated in a 2004 interview that Four Swords was supposed to be the oldest story in the series. Four Swords Adventures is a sequel to that, and Minish Cap is the prequel.

It can only be called fate. That here. I would again gather the three with the crests. That I should lay my hand on that which grants the wishes of the beholder. That when power, wisdom, and courage come together, the gods would have no choice but to come down.
