I'm disputing the validity of this The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard example:

  • Also, no matter which version, when you battle N for the last time, his Legendary will always be two levels above the one you just caught. If you're playing Black and have Reshiram, you might make it through the match-up, but otherwise, yours is just fabric softener so your others can step in and take it down.

Edit: Er... I guess I should put this in spoilers...

For one, he used it to help sweep the elite four, and the champion, so it makes sense for it to have gained at least 2 levels. Also, the legendary you catch, regardless of version, knows Dragonbreath, while N's has no dragon type damaging moves. So, in actuality, your legendary has a significant advantage over N's.

The previous Nintendo Hard entry. It makes EVERY SINGLE OPPONENT LOOK LIKE THE WORST THING EVER ADSGKJFAHSGKDFJHGAJDH. It even make it look like wild Pokémon have minds of their own. And acts like this doesn't happen in other games?

On the YMMV page, the Ensemble Dark Horse entry is way too long - maybe we should shave it down to some of the more obvious/qualified examples? Golurk, for example, seems to qualify because people are always talking about it and praising it on forums/comments/etc., while I'm not sure if Zekrom qualifies because it's one of the starring mascots, and given a lot of emphasis to begin with (though it is getting more attention than, say, Dialga and Palkia).

The You Tube link under Near Victory Fanfare no longer exists. It's supposed to be a link to an example of the remix of the main Pokemon theme that kicks in when a Gym Leader is down to their last Pokemon. I don't have the time to find a replacement right now, so I added this topic to give other tropers a heads-up about the link until it gets fixed or removed.

Now, does anyone besides me think that the music score composed by Morikazu Aoki, Go Ichinose, Shota Kageyama, and Hitomi Sato sounds kind of like something you'd hear in a pre-Anastasia Don Bluth movie (i.e. An American Tail)? For example, the song you hear on Route 2, Route 3, and the entrance to Pinwheel Forest?

About the possible shout out to the supposed twin dragons of Mother 3, I sure nowhere does the Mother 3 game mention a Light counterpart to the Dark Dragon, is there anyone else that has beaten the game remember anything that says there is one besides murals that no one in the game comments on? One would think the Magypsies would at hint at it or something. At this point it looks more like speculation on something that might Itoi might have purposely left vague, and I don't think you can call it a shout out if the thing it supposedly references isn't confirmed itself.

If it should stay, can it at least be agreed upon that it's more accurate to say "twin dragon murals" instead?

The following Shout-Out entries have had their validity contested. Discuss.

  • Alternatively, a spirit possessed armor and one of the dex entries mention how the seal it has is a vital part of its being and messing with it is dangerous... Anyone else thinking of a cute blonde boy bound to a suit of armor? Golurk's design itself also resembles him somewhat.
  • Frillish and Jellicent's male and female forms are blue and pink, respectively, in their normal forms, while their shiny forms are green and purple. In Donkey Kong Country 3, one could input a code to give Dixie (pink) and Kiddy (blue) purple and green colored outfits. Considering they're both Nintendo games...

Um... What the heck happened to the WMG Page? Sorry if I'm misinformed, but is it really site policy to delete WMGs that are predictions about something after that something comes out? Why? Are they not notable anymore? This notion that guesses stop becoming guesses after they are either confirmed or Jossed boggles my mind. As far as I'm concerned, half of the fun of WMG is making predictions to see if they are either Jossed or I Knew It!. Three years after the book came out there's still a page for guesses about the seventh Harry Potter Book. Those guesses didn't get deleted; they just got separated from the rest of the WMGs. So why can't we do the same with the Pokemon Black And White predictions? It's pretty simple; just create a new folder on the page that say Pokemon Black And White Predictions. That way they don't clutter the page, but they aren't just deleted like they never existed or that they don't matter any more.

PS: And what is exactly is wrong with the name theories or the Earthbound crossover theories?

Eh, "Legendary" in the original games never meant more than "one per cartridge" and "most NPCs have never seen them, but will tell you stories about how awesome they are". On another note, it's not the number of legendary species that make them rare; it's the rareness of a species that makes it one of the legendary. But now for something more interesting: The "Legendary" have been clumped together from three groups of pokemon in the translation. In japanese versions you'll find "pokemon from legends", "pokemon that may or may not exist", and "pokemon from myth".

Geechisu should be romanized as G Cis, not Goetis. An interview with Junichi Masuda in Coro Coro showed that he's named that because his theme uses G and C# (Cis) to create dissonance.

That might be an argument against using Goetis, but GCis makes no sense as a name, and that being the basis of his name doesn't mean it should be literally done as GCis. "Wartortle" comes from "turtle", but that doesn't mean it has to be "Warturtle".

Besides, source? I don't see this interview on any of the usual sites.

Using "Gee" is still weird. What I extrapolate from that interview is that "ゲー" is either how Germans pronounce "G" (as a music note or otherwise, no idea) or how Japanese people refer to the "G" in the letter-note system (as opposed to solfege, where it's "so(l)" or the Japanese system, where it's "to").

In any case, you can only really argue for Gcis if you're going to be a purist about this.

Cotton was the cash crop in the Deep South for centuries and it remained so by the use of African American slave labor and until the Civil Rights Movement black sharecroppers. So yes, the cotton thing is a case of Unfortunate Implications.

I severely doubt that was the intention of the Japanese development team but it does come off as racist if unitentionally.

So, my mind is totally blown by the suggestion that Geechisu/Geechis/Geetis is supposed to be "Goetis." It ties in perfectly with his position as one of the Seven Sages (Goetis comes from the Greek word for sorcery) and his desire to summon one of the dragons (Goetia being the title of a book on demon summoning). Should we change all references to 'Goetis'? It fits so well, and I doubt Game Freak will ever give us his Anglicanized name (And if they do, it might not help much. No, 'baruchaa' would be how they transliterate 'vulture.' I don't know where the 'jina' part comes from, though.

Serebii and Bulbapedia mostly use the official transliterations of the names, which I (and I imagine others) don't care for because they miss a lot of the funny puns or the spirit of the name. Like, デスカーン is officially and literally 'Desukaan' but a better translation in my opinion would be 'Deathkan' ('death' + 'kan,' the Japanese word for coffin). The literal translations do work for some names (like Futachimaru), but not for others (Ranculus instead of Rankurusu). This page has used mostly translated names instead of transliterated names, so I figured that we should keep it that way. So there's my two cents.

According to pixiv encyclopedia page about Touya or Touko, player can meet the Spear Counterpart (and even become a partner for a while) at certain place in the game (which is why there are default names for them), so I think Schrödinger's Player Character trope is not applied.

Considering how big this page is getting, would it be a good idea to, say, make separate folders on the page for game-related tropes, new pokemon-related tropes, and Audience Reaction Tropes? I think just adding those three folders would make a big difference in making the page less messy and more accessable. Of course, I don't want to do it before I bring it to the discussion page to get a few yay or nays. Of course, if I don't get any responce to this topic in a day or two, I'm going to go ahead and add the folders, which is sure to get attention, in which case I will change it back if I get vehement opposition.

I agree with this. It's kinda misleading, if only for a few seconds, to read a trope name and then realize it doesn't concern the actual game but the Fan Dumb. Plus, it may separate the good and bad qualities a little...whether or not that is a good or bad thing is up to you, but hey, then we can categorize it!

I added the folders. I think these will work, but in particular I wasn't sure about the tropes relating to new characters. I couldn't decide whether to merge them with new pokemon tropes or game tropes, or to just add them all to the Character Page, so for now I made it its own folder, though it is by far the smallest one.

  • Why do some of the Pokemon have darker and edgier Dex entries? Because the protagonists that are entering them are older... or because they're "American".

I am confused by this particular statement, as dex entries have always been really goddamn creepy and the ones that people consider 'darker and edgier' are probably par for the course. I mean... Shedninja? Darkrai? Parasect? Hypno? Gorebyss? Kabutops? Grovyle, one of the evolutions of the cute little starters? ...I think I can stop listing things by this point.

(this is Montblanc typing) Because everything points toward it being New York. Everyone that says it's Shanghai ignores the fact that the center island/peninsula (where Hiun City is located) has islands/peninsulas on BOTH sides (Shanghai has two peninsulas with a couple of tiny islands in between them) and Hong Kong and Shanghai both are wedge shaped, whereas Manhattan Island is long a skinny, like Isshu. That, plus the pigeon (look at my post above for more info) and the prairie dog (which I first thought was a chipmunk), which is native to America. The early Pokemon tend to be based on animals you can find in the wild in the real-world region. Also, one early screenshot (the one that had the abandoned factory and traffic cones) seemed to feature a black guy, though I could be mistaken on that part. And don't forget the bald eagle.

I did think for a while that Isshu was Hong Kong based on the black/white dragons, the shape of Hiun City and the comment you could only reach it from the other regions by boat/plane (it's a lot easier to go to Hong Kong by boat from Japan than New York), but ever since the map was revealed, I changed my mind.

That was far too many words for a children's monster-battling game. I hang my head in shame.

Judging by an above conversation, I'd say no.

Related to the above (if vaguely), the new Pokemon trailer has been leaked to YouTube and it's actually pretty cool looking. It seems from the opening shot that it will take place in a very large city on a peninsula. If it takes place in Hiun City (like I hope), we'll likely get confirmation on where it is based on, as all previous movies have been based on real-world cities, as confirmed by the staff multiple times (The Deoxys movie was based on Vancouver and the Arceus movie was based on Greece, from what I recall)

Then again, none of the past movies have took place at in-game locations, so it's unlikely. :/

There's a couple of Shanghai/Hong Kong comparison maps floating around that do show some interesting parallels, but for the life of me I can't find them anymore. They might have been on an old Bulbagarden topic. Other than that, it's the yin-yang theme and the fact that it's not Japan (and as I mentioned before, those two cities are more accessible to Japan via boat than New York is.) This is again off-topic, but I hope that next gen takes place in a different country again. I would KILL for a region based on the British Isles. With a lion and unicorn dual legendary and a raven to finish off the trio. OMG.

Montblanc Since: Mar, 2010
Jul 22nd 2010 at 9:57:22 AM •••

Yes, but as I said up above, the first bird you encounter in the wild is always from the country the region is based on, as well as the first rodent. Poochyena is not supposed to be from Japan, it's like all the hundreds of other Pokemon that are based on animals outside the country. Mamepato is a feral pigeon, which is not found in China (barring one tiny region that's not Shanghai or Hong Kong), and Minezumi is a prairie dog, which is only found in the US. Wargle is icing on the cake.

I'm arguing here because I believe all the 'Isshu is New York' stuff should be put back on the page. Game Freak might never confirm what country it's based on, as they apparently haven't done so in the past (Hoenn being the exception). I figured it was better to hear people's arguments for/against New York/Shanghai/Hong Kong here than for constant edit wars on the main page until there is some sort of consensus whether or not it is based on some specific country.

I'm starting to think the people are bias to America. I mean, what would be the odds that in an English (language) forum on whatever (New York) Isshu would be based on that the people would be Americans. But seriously, "rats" and "pigeons". How is that evidence? You can find that in any country. Of course, "liberty ticket" and "football players" seems to be evidences, but people are ignoring evidences that goes against New York or points to otherwise.

Montblanc Since: Mar, 2010
Aug 21st 2010 at 6:17:28 PM •••

The thing is, in past games, the early bird (hohoho) and rodent have been based on animals specifically found in Japan (though it is difficult to place Rattata Pidgey and Spearow). Starly, for instance, isn't based on the starling most Americans or Europeans are familiar with, but the white-cheeked starling, which is native to Asia. The rock or feral pigeon isn't found in Shanghai or Hong Kong, two of the most popular suggestions. The prarie dog and woodchuck (whatever Minezumi and Miruhog are supposed to be based off, but it is obviously not a rat) are native to North America. Add that to all of the other evidence, and New York has a very strong case.

What is it that points against it being New York? I haven't seen anything against it, just stuff that could point toward it being Shanghai (but most of it is stuff based purely on the map that was released forever ago, while more evidence comes out that points toward New York all the time). I'm genuinely curious.

Aug 22nd 2010 at 10:28:01 PM •••

I have to admit the evidences does point to New York, but it doesn't really confirm it. Geography is pretty much one of the points. I mean you have to admit. Isshu does resemble Shanghai. There is a mountain located on the left side, which New York doesn't have. Of course, I know there isn't a mountain on the right side either (or maybe not). The desert could be based on the Songze ancient culture site. I mean there have been info about the desert being an archaeological site. I don't think they would base it on "Ground Zero" (no offense). There is also the possibility of the city below the lake being based on Suzhou, due to similarities such as being a "city of canals", having one of the largest ferris wheels (fourth, I think), and being origin of Kunqu, one of the oldest form of Chinese operas (musicals). Besides the yin-yang motif, there has also been subtle references to Chinese culture. For examples, just check the "Just Bugs Me" page and look for the blog about Shanghai. (Summary is in the hidden text). Of course, I can't deny the evidences (liberty, football, broadway, wargle), but then again the possibility of Isshu being Shanghai or even "Shanghattan" can't be ignored.

Montblanc Since: Mar, 2010
Aug 23rd 2010 at 6:00:21 PM •••

Oh, I agree there's some compelling geographic evidence for Shanghai, but I don't feel there has been any new evidence since the map came out (besides the musicals and that can either be a reference to Chinese theater or Broadway) and the shape can go either way I feel, as Shanghai is more wedge-shaped but Manhattan is not a complete match either. I have no idea why some people suggest that the desert would represent Ground Zero though, that would be quite tasteless of Game Freak to do something like that, lol. I'm mostly wondering what disproves New York.

I will admit that it could be possible that they did take some elements of Shanghai and put in New York (Chinatown?) or vice versa. I didn't find out until recently that Sootopolis was heavily based off a Greek city for instance.

Because EVERYTHING IS RACIST. Actually it's probably the jungle thing, which could be unfortunate depending on how they handle it. Though I'm theorizing that she has some connection with N because they both seem to have backgrounds involving living in the wild, so I'm not going to read too much into it unless her portrayal does have offensive elements to it.

I am honestly more confused about the unfortunate implications around the arm of the one guy doing the coronation being a darker color than his other arm, which may be the result of scarring, tattooing, or even the lighting rather than HAHA OH MAN LET'S MAKE THIS DUDE LITERALLY HALF BLACK AND HALF WHITE FOR EXTRA SYMBOLISM DESPITE THE FACT THAT GENETIC CONDITIONS THAT CAUSE PEOPLE TO HAVE BOTH DARK AND LIGHT SKIN IN PLACES GENERALLY DON'T WORK THAT WAY. Especially since the guy in the fur coat looks like him, implying that it's probably scarring, tattooing, or the lighting. Can we stop jumping the gun on calling things racist until we... you know... actually know what's going on with them...

Montblanc Since: Mar, 2010

Yeah, I don't see how anyone could see Iris as racist (I think she looks like she might be one of the coolest characters in the anime, since, I dunno, ever.), but on the other hand, she comes across as a character that people would look way too into and declare to be racist. Kind of meta, I guess.

What's unfortunate about the black/white guy is that skin color doesn't work that way, making him look like a weird fantasy character instead of a normal mixed-race guy. And I don't think it's lighting or scars, his skin looks normal other than the color and the newest trailer looked a lot clearer so you can see that he has one arm with a white sleeve and black arm and another with a blue sleeve and white arm. I also don't think he's the fur coat guy because their outfits are different colors.

192.112.102.254 Since: Dec, 1969
Sep 3rd 2010 at 1:20:59 PM •••

I think he's the same guy in a different outfit that's being used for the coronation; the fur coat is probably his... er... 'normal' outfit. N's also wearing a different, more coronation-appropriate outfit, and you don't see anyone claiming that he's not N based on that fact.

The guy in the trailer and the sprite of the guy in the fir coat who's speaking for Team Plasma also have the same hair color and weird triple ahoge, and it's reasonable to assume that Team Plasma is responsible for N's coronation because of their medieval theme. Plus even in the trailer you can see parts of his face on that side and it's... only his arm that's really clearly a different color from the other side of his body, which suggests to me that it's either a stylized burn scar (or a Legendary-induced Red Right Hand, I've seen both portrayed similar to this dude in anime before) or it's a special tattoo/skin makeup that's symbolically used in the coronation ritual rather than his actual, natural skin color.

That's why I'm saying that we should wait until we figure out what's going on with that dude and see his actual Sugimori artwork before we decide that Gamefreak's failing biology and basic observation forever by being unfortunate and portraying people of mixed race as being literally half black and half white.

The thing is, there's another dude in the coronation scene who looks more like the fur coat guy, only it looks like he's just wearing a long yellow robe and not fur. It's actually caused a little Edit War between him and me on the Video Games page, mainly because he just won't explain anything, appearently thinking simply saying that she and the title are examples is all that is needed. Should a YMMV or something be added when he adds it back yet again, just so it won't continue on?

I love how we're talking about the unfortunate implications behind the Team Plasma symbol being a Chi-Rho when it actually looks more like a misshapen parakeet, the (or a standard sword and shield insignia if you're feeling boring).

http:// i26.tinypic.com/2lj70k6.png (copy/paste without the space) Like so. It also looks more like the Rod of Asclepius, shown here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staff_of_Aesculapius

TL;DR can we please wait for better quality images/scans of Team Plasma before we start troping their symbol?

I dunno, it would have to look like a P somehow, and the only thing I'm unsure about is whether that's an x or > over it. It could go either way.

If it does turn out to be a Chi-Rho, I don't believe that Game Freak actually intended it to be a Take That! against Catholicism. They probably saw it and thought 'Hey, cool! This looks like some kind of medieval P, let's use it!' Now, if it was Atlus...

Oh yeahhh I totally had a dumbass moment there. Though the P does look... rather more like the Russian F than a P at this quality. Maybe it's meant to be two swords crossed through it?

That's true as well, especially if they're going for a Knights Templar theme. It's also possible that it's more of a coincidence that it resembles a Chi-Rho because Game Freak intended it to look like a heraldic symbol without knowing it was similar to a religious symbol. Game Freak generally doesn't go for as much gratuitous religious symbolism, as some other countries, so I'm willing to bet it could be accidental.

Well, new images of Team Plasma leaked, if you want to look at them. Still not a very good view of their logo. If it is a Chi-Rho, it's a very stylized one.

I can definitely see the Chi-Rho, but it's looks to me like a Rho laid over a Chi (each has its own black outline with blue fill) as opposed to a unified symbol.

I know I'm late to this one, but we've seen the Plasma insignia in complete detail now, and it's definitely not a Chi-Rho.

Okay, so is there a confirmation on what system this game will be on? I keep hearing people deducing that it's gonna be on the DS by the pre-orders but my friend keeps adamantly stating that Nintendo is releasing it as a Killer App for the 3DS?

It's for the DS.

Besides, with all those other great titles lined up for the 3DS, I don't think Pokemon needs to be considered a killer app...

thank god...my friend's not gonna believe me. He's claiming its gonna be like the original Phoenix Wright, where the first comes out on the DS in japan, but the localization team makes it for the 3DS :D

Your friend has it wrong with Phoenix Wright anyway, the localization team didn't port it from GBA to DS, the port was for the Japanese audience. It just also ended up being a convenient situation to bring the game (and after it's success, the series) to North America. Phoenix Wright was also out for a while before they decided to port it, this game hasn't even been released yet.

Your friend must be in deep denial, is really gullible, or something I don't have words for.

He may be interpreting "no old Pokemon pre-National Dex" to mean that.

Generally, I go by this when it comes to Pokemon Black and White info: if it doesn't show up on Bulbapedia, Serebii.net, and the like, then it's probably some twisted truth or something made up to fool gullible/paranoid people.

Like the claims Musharna was intentionally made to look like a fetus or that Aloe has a pancake and syrup themed gym.

Either way, I think that Trope for 'Took a level in badass' should still stay off, until we at least have some idea of how that potential Luvdisc evo would work.

Well, IF they are evolutions to non-Isshu Pokemon, I have some ideas...

You can catch the evolutions in the wild, but breeding is unavailable until the endgame.

OR

Breeding is avaiable all along (because it would be difficult to justify pushing it to the endgame) but you need a special incense to get the basic forms. The incense is not available until the endgame.

With either of these ideas, Pachirisu and Luvdisc have an evolution method that allows them to evolve at an early level (such as by learning a newly introduced move, which is learned at a low level.)

Just an idea. I'm probably wrong.

Holy crap... I don't know if I'm a genius, or if it was just so obvious that nobody else felt the need to point it out, but look at this.

The next installation of the Pokemon anime is called "Pokemon: Best Wishes, "translated from "Poketto Monsutā Besuto Uisshu!" according to The Other Wiki.

Poketto Monsutā Besuto Uisshu!

Besuto Uisshu!

Uisshu!

Wait... Isshu? That's the region we're in now!

3 on 3 what. This means a preposterous overhaul of the battle system. It could work out but I have trouble imagining anything but a clusterfuck.

And yeah, I think it's time to stop listing new Pokemon then...I'll put them here for reference though:

  • デスカーン Desukān (Deathkhan? "Death" and kan/"coffin"): Seems to be a possessed sarcophagus; presumably somewhat similar to Spiritomb, then. An evolution, maybe?
  • デンチュラ Denchura (Dentula, den/"electricity" and tarantula): One assumes an electric tarantula.
  • ドリューズ Doryūzu (Doryuz? Doryū is an alternate reading of the kanji 土竜/mogura/"mole"): A mole with drills.
  • オノノクス Ononokusu (Ononox, why not. Looks pretty scary, so it's probably derived from ononoku/"to tremble with fear"): He's covered in blades.
  • モグリュー Moguryū (Moguryu? Another mogura pun): A smaller drill-mole.

I wonder how much of an impact 3 on 3 battles will really have, considering 2 on 2 battles still seem to be mostly ignored by those that would most feel the changes, ie. the competitive players. I'm certainly looking forward to it, if it's true. I would be happy with a greatly increased emphasis on 2 on 2 battles even.

When Tsutaja is K.O'd, the music returns to the tempo it sounded like in previous clips.

Can it be that the music changes to fit the situation?!

Araragi is another word for yew, according the the Japanese Wikipedia.

But using the name Yew here is not something to be done.

Just as a quick glimpse through Bulbapedia, Ookido means orchid, not Oak. Utsugi is deutzia and not Elm. Odamaki is aquilegia and not Birch.

The fourth generation's Rowan is a direct translation though.

Alright, I'll switch about the wording. How about something along the lines of 'complimenting this is the tuckers caps adding to the overall effect, however, these might be considered grandfather claused'.

Except of course with cleaner wording?

Neither truckers caps or mullets are typical eighties styles. I know. I was there. The only people who wore truckers caps in the eighties were truckers and farmers; eighties hair was big and feathered all over, not short in front and long in back. Look at the pictures here.
