Kind of a Not Using The Z Word situation I've noticed: While the D'ni are not exactly identical to humans from our universe/reality/Age (i.e. us), couldn't it be argued that they are simply just a different version of humanity in the unspecificed Another Dimension where they originated before they started exploring The Multiverse ? Simply put, they are an analogue of the human species in the parallel universe where they first evolved.
