I'm rather sorry to ruin the mood, but Vetinari's story falls apart once you think about it (Fridge Logic?) Roe are unfertilized eggs, not children and how is: Caring for your family in order to have them survive 'evil'?

I think his argument, summarized, is more "We have to kill others in order to eat and stay alive. Killing others, particularly those who haven't done anything to you, is usually considered wrong. But the world works this way, and the best we can do to survive is to keep doing it. This still doesn't change the fact that any god that would create a world that works this way cannot be considered benevolent by any means."

Point taken, but it makes it even less of a tearjerker as that can be read as -I know better than any other what's right and what's wrong and I will do anything and stop at nothing to make people share my views on the world- It can be read like that, but it's up to everyone on their own.
