I am not at all questioning or challenging the use of this phrase (because I love the sound of it, if nothing else), but — what does "octopus-black" mean? Is it an actual, established term, or some troper's clever neologism? What is its origin? I am burning with irrational curiosity here.

I am guessing it refers to octopus ink.

News Radio could be considered a spiritual successor to WKRP in Cincinatti (although set at a news station rather than a rock one.)
