Can I please ask that the Bible quote be removed? I'm sorry, I hate being the easily offended minority, but for some Atheists, not feeling the presence of god or losing that feeling of presence is a painful one, and thus it completely defies the point of the page, in terms of the fact that TV Tropes shows real life solidarity with those dealing with isolation and loneliness.

I think the Bible quote works well. If it was a quote from a fictional character it would be fine, and by definition those people aren't real. It shows how old this concept is.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

I'm with the 'remove' group for the same reasons as the original poster. If we want to demonstrate how old the idea is is, we can just mention in the description that it's Older than Print and then stick the bible quote in the appropriate section in the Examples.

Also if it were a fictional character's quote it would be less likely to have the same Real Life implications.

Whereas many of us would be offended if it WERE removed.

So, since there is no way to avoid offending everyone, the only pertinent issue becomes whether it fits.

Clearly, it fits. So it should stay.

To remove it is to violate the integrity of TV Tropes to a degree that is plainly unacceptable to any reasoning, thinking being.

I realize this is probably nitpicky, but I moved that Patrick Stewart Speech in the Real Life folder to the top of it. I feel like, given the nature of the examples, it deserves to be at the top so it's the first thing someone sees when they open the folder. If I'm wrong, feel free to move it back to where it was.

Please, please, please. Let us make an exception to the so-called rule, and include the below bullets (or some reworded version of it). I have visited this page several times when I felt depressed, and it has helped me feel better. I am sure I am not alone (heh heh) in feeling this way. I know, I know, I could copy it on a text file and read that, but somehow, it just doesn't feel the same way unless I read it on this You Are Not Alone page.

  • You.
    • It doesn't matter who you are, what you look like, how old you are, where you're from, what you do for a living, what religion you are, your sexuality, your opinions, SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE loves you and cares about you. Be it your friends, your family, or some random person on the street, there's always someone that wants to see you smile, even if it doesn't seem like it. Love and affection are present everywhere you look, and if you're considering hurting yourself, for the love of God, think about this before you do it. Even if nobody you know or met cares (and I guarantee that they do), there's a million people you've never met who don't want you to hurt yourself. I know I certainly don't. So go hug a kitten, pet a puppy, give someone flowers, tell a joke, be happy. Because you will never, ever be alone.
    • Remember, you are a troper. You're one of us. Even if this is your first time on this site, even if you don't have an account, you're part of the community we have here. And we don't want to lose you. You've made it this far and we know you can make it the rest of the way. You Are Better Than You Think You Are, and we tropers are in this together. Never forget, we tropers aren't a community, we're a family.

The description includes things that there are zero examples of. For example:

"The Smart Guy comes home depressed only to discover that the recently reformed Femme Fatale is waiting for him wearing nothing but... Huh!"

has not a single instance in the examples (and, frankly, I can't think of any time that happened in anything). And even if it did, this probably isn't the right Trope for it anyway.

Why do people misinterpret this trope as Loners Are Freaks? People need people in their lives, since humans are social creatures, and even so-called loners tend to have a close (if limited) circle of friends...okay, one or two. Still counts. There's nothing wrong with being alone, per se, but if you are a loner, and this entry made you feel lonely...well, that makes you a loner. And likely, you have no life. We feel your pain. See what I did there?

Either you're depressed, pitifully cynical, or apathetic (and you have no personal experience with this kind of thing). And for starters, there are 7 billion people in the world. How many of them don't have any good friends or acquaintances that would be there for your time in need? And of those, how many of them wouldn't be able to change that? The answer is surprisingly few, but remember: 7 billion people. Empathy, at least to a modest degree, is an instinctual trait that is only missing in a small number of people with a biological/psychological disorder.

TheMalignancy Since: Jun, 2010
Jun 20th 2013 at 11:47:33 AM •••

The problems here being that empathy only works properly if you're face to face and it's someone you actually know, that if you're in a fit of real depression then no amount of friendly funtime hugboxing on the internet is going to draw you out of yourself (if anything, if just makes you feel more pathetic), and that in the end all the good sentiment in the world is just that; sentiment. That's why it's hollow.

It's a few paragraphs about how great the world is and no meaningful action to support it, a little paragraph about how much you're loved by all those people you've conveniently never met, and how you shouldn't kill yourself because anonymous poster #3445 decided it would make him sad. Empathy to a modest degree, just like you said.

That said, you kind of have to question the validity of telling people they're not alone over the internet in general. You tend not to get groups of ten using the same computer, after all.

I wrote that entry several years ago, when I was in a pretty bad place. Looking back, my problems weren't so serious, but at the time, I considered hurting myself almost every day.

I was reading the Crowning Moment of Heartwarming page, and someone mentioned the Real Life entry from You Are Not Alone. I checked and found that it was gone, for some reason. So I wrote a new one.

I don't know why I did, to be honest. I'm really not much of an editor. Writing that just made me feel better and helped me pull out of a dark time in my life. I didn't expect anyone else to take anything from it, but I suppose some people have, and I'm glad of that.

All that said, it is my firm belief that there is not a soul in the world who is truly alone. Perhaps I am not allowed to say I care for anyone whose face I have never seen. I can respect that. But I can say with certainty that every person has someone in the world who cares about them. You are loved by people you have met, who know your name and your face and know that there is something inside of you that is worthy of compassion.

Even so, it is, ultimately, human nature to care for other humans. We remember the defects, those among us that are cruel and insane, because history gives names and faces to the villainous. We do not remember the compassionate multitudes. History does not give names and faces to the peaceful, the generous, the unassumingly benign masses that wish the best for their fellows. I know that the majority of people who exist must be compassionate because if the masses did not desire for society to succeed and for we as a species to benefit, then there could be no human society, and the great legacy of our species would be that of apes with sticks.

For this reason, I can say with absolute conviction that the masses of people that you have not met care for you. If they could see your woes and your private sufferings, what stranger would not pity you? How many rational humans could desire a stranger to suffer harm? Even self-inflicted?

I don't know why I'm writing this, truth be told. Maybe it is simply to make me feel better once again. Thank you to everyone who has expressed their gratitude for the writings of an angry, depressed child several years ago. It was not written for you, but I am glad for any positive emotion you may have taken from it.

The world is beautiful, and there are people who love you. I'll stop preaching now.

In hindsight? This could have been avoided.

However, adding images to pages which have gone through Image Pickin' isn't. There's a note in the source that this one has, and the image is hidden as a potential spoiler. The thread stalled out, so a new one is needed to determine if it is a spoiler and if the suggestion is preferable. Current image, from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

And beside, Anonymous isn't some sort of Robin Hood organisation. They're only looking out for themselves.
