Hmm, why did it become a Dead Horse Trope? I personally find it funny and fitting that vampires are given faux-Romanian accents, 'cause I'm Romanian, and I like all this creepy-handsome-dead-guy living in a Transylvanian castle scenario — feels like home.
I find the claim that Lugosi never did this bizarre. I've watched many Lugosi films, and while he could pronounce his W's if he tried, he still replaced them with V's quite often.
