Is it worth mentioning the alternative interpretation of this? As stated on 1d4Chan (paraphrased slightly):
"One of the rules of the Internet is: 'there are no girls on the Internet.' This rule does not mean what you think it means. In real life, people like you merely for being a girl. ...but on the Internet, there's no chance to [get anything for putting with you]; this means the advantage of being a "girl" does not exist. You don't get a bonus to conversation"
Basically, the anonymity of the Internet is a two-way street; because you can use the Internet without giving away any information about yourself, what IS given should always be treated with suspicion.
Edited by DracoKanji Hide / Show RepliesYea. it is really weird omission that the actual meme and fact are being deleted from history to create this illusion of "trolls"
Edited by mrttaoYes, this should probably be added to make the article more useful.
I stated that this is false in the Real Life section from the get go so I would like a comment for that.
Removed and replaced the following on the main page:
- Strangely, it never seemed to occur to the Internet population that women weren't actually causing the attention to exist. If they'd just ignored them or treated them like regular people instead of freaking out one way or the other every time someone online claimed to be female, the GIRLs would have disappeared almost instantly.
Because the original GIRLs and the actual females who abused the gender imbalance on the early internet did not just passively sit there waiting for people to start giving them special treatment. They actively sought attention, strung specifically naive, young guys along and on the whole milked it for all it was worth.
Which is exactly the reason for the whole 'The are no girls on the internet' philosophy in the first place: As advice from (now) more cynical internet users to the next generation to warn them against accepting faux-romantic interest from attention whores of both the male and female variants.
The removed paragraph makes it sound like it was all the males' fault and actual females are completely innocent of the whole thing.
Angry gets shit done.Removed this example:
- Pre-op Transsexuals, sort of...
...because it's rather insulting to transwomen as it's currently phrased, and as a whole the issue is vastly more complicated than that.
Mentioning transsexuals on this page isn't a bad idea, seeing as they tend to get into trouble because of this idea, but it needs a more detailed explanation to possibly get close to explaining the nuances of the situation.
This article probably needs an entire new chapter, now that we have deep fakes, Chat GPT and chatbots like Replika.
