Why all this stuff about being named after a character, when the character's name already means "chief wizard"?

What is this trope? "Any magical person who's extremely powerful." What? That's not a solid thing.

Various dictionaries give the spelling as "archimage" rather than "archmage". Should this trope be re-titled?
