Not sure about the Doctor Who example. Star Trek yes; Vulcans, Ferengi and Klingons have established characteristics which V'lar, Nog and K'ehyler play against. But with the Doctor it was the other way about; the Time Lords were created long after his personality was developed, as a contrast to him. So it doesn't fit the "direct contradiction to some established stereotype" definition.
