Removed this, because, unless I'm completely misinterpreting it, this seems like a mean-spirited Take That at the author, which is not what this article is for. If I am misinterpreting it, feel free to put it back up (although you might want to be more specific about what you mean):
  • Take a look at the author's picture on the inside cover of most printings of the book. Take a good, long look. Her issues do not end with the school system.

Why did Melinda have her break down when she got colored pencils for Christmas? I probably overlooked something very obvious, but I didn't understand.

It was the fact that they actually noticed that she liked to draw when she had previously thought they couldn't care less about her, and that she didn't know what to say to them or how to thank them.

Seriously? Pencils. Does This Remind You of Anything?? But apparently I only thought that because of a story our teacher made us read in which a little girl was almost raped after being asked "Hey, do you want a jumbo pencil?"
