I've made a YKTTW about the inverse of this trope. Should it be a thing on its own? I named it "Took A Level In Scrappy", and I can list quite a few examples.

I'm going to let you know ahead of time that a trope will like that will not pass through. We briefly had a similar trope called "From Breakout To Scrappy" that covered the same topic, and that page ended up being cut and redlisted.

Damn shame. I guess it was too much flame-bait to become permanent. But by that extent, wouldn't The Scrappy become this as well? Perhaps it can be a page where there's no examples listed on it proper, but it can be mentioned in works when applicable.

The Scrappy has a very large amount of inbound links, so trying to remove it would be counterproductive. Besides, it's not a matter of "but then what about [X] or [Y] which are about negative receptions?", but a matter of "the wiki doesn't want more of them, we already have too much with what's already here". I've seen some actor examples, notably Joanne Frogatt (scrappy in Robin Hood , rescued in Downton Abbey ) and Erika Alexander (scrappy in The Cosby Show and rescued in Living Single ). Is that allowed? If so, could Francis Capra count? He's not very famous but he used to mostly be known as an annoying child actor (notably in Kazaam and the Free Willy Sequel). Then as a young adult he played Weevil in Veronica Mars to much acclaim.

Since actors are from Real Life, adding them to the page would violate its status as a NRLEP article.

Does the film Hulk really belong here? While the film studio may not have been sure what it want to do with the series. And the avengers certainly rekindled interest in the character. But the incredible Hulk was reasonably successful opening at no 1 and earning 260 million dollars.

Is it possible to do this via Fan Fic without turning said character into a full-blown Possession Sue?*

In general I think we have way to many examples here, some of them even titled "intentional", which do not fit the trope as I understand it. A scrappy is not a bad character but a character that makes the whole work worse for being in it. I don't think authors intentionally go for "bad writing". So any case of an unsympathetic character becoming nice and bearable in universe should not be an example as long as the character does not drag the work down with him. Or am I mistaken?

Shame I liked Jar Jar to begin with, but he is pretty cool in Darth and Droids as well.

Does an inversion of this trope exist? (Where a character is liked, but then becomes The Scrappy.)

That's what I'm trying to find out. If this trope doesn't exist, it ought to.

The ENTIRE professional wrestling section seems to be a little loose with the "rescued from" part of this.

Can this be rewritten to be understandable?
  • Miko(Transformers Prime) has started to be this. She is obnoxious. Has been toned down since the five pilot episodes. She started to show guilt over her mistakes. Despite that she still hadn't shown to be fixed enough not to the scrappy. Do that she is more or a line a base breaker now.

Can this trope apply if the character still has the same trait that made people hate them, but it's deconstructed, or played for drama instead of laughs (or vice versa)?

Yes. Xion is an example of this. Is she still a Kairi lookalike with Sora's abilities ? Yes. But the Deconstruction of the Copy Cat Sue means that she'd still an interesting character.
