I dunno. I'll probably bring it up here.

In Lex Luthor Man Of Steel, there's really no reason Lex cannot do this with Hope, as she's a robot anyway, except for his apparently quite real feelings for her. It's especially jarring that he doesn't as most other versions of him would have a veritable walk in closet of back ups of her, and it's easy to sell to the media a story where she didn't really die, and was merely badly wounded. So much so that it actually impairs her powers, so she can't do much heroing anymore.

I have some doubts about the Love Never Dies examples. For all I know about the show (which I haven't been able to actually see on stage, mind you), The Phantom doesn't seem to treat Meg as a replacement for Christine in any way. Perhaps she would even be happy to be one (as long as he would give up on getting the real thing), but he never pays her much attention and ignores her feelings for him (in fact, he seems completely unaware of them until the end of the play). The "Christine robot" mentioned would be the actual substitute, but then again... the Phantom has a Christine mannequin both here and in the original play, they are both shown, but not given much attention within the plot besides underlining his obsession with Christine, he never seems to consider them any sort of a satisfying substitute, and in fact all this time he keeps trying to get the real Christine. To me it seems more like a very extravagant version of keeping your loved one's photograph than replacing somebody you've lost. I'm not doing anything with the examples yet, though, because maybe I misunderstand something about the trope or LND or whatever. Anybody else has an opinion on this?

Removed the line about "crazy canon!Zutarians" as there is nothing that this troper can recall in Book 3 of Avatar suggesting that Zuko looked at Katara as a little sister, though it *would* have been an interesting plot if they'd gone there. Their canon relationship is platonic and equal; he no more looks at her like a little sister than she looks at him as an older brother (besides, she already *has* one of those).

Juliet as a replacement goldfish for Annie on Lost? Where is that stated in canon?
