Why is "Like a Broken Record" used for the literal version of the trope, and "Broken Record" for the figurative version? Seems backwards to me....

Regarding the Arthur example, I actually can't guess what happens next. Presumably, the machine malfunctions, but I can think of several different failure modes. (If the precise failure mode is unimportant, or if it would be better to preserve suspense for those who have not seen the episode, it may be better to simply say that the machine malfunctions.)
