You're thinking in literal terms. The term redshirt is a misnomer, actually. I'm not implying that we should change the trope name (since we're not the only ones to use the term to mean what it does), but a redshirt is a (usually) nameless minor character who serves as cannon/phaser/Monster of the Week/whatever fodder. Mr. Scott was a member of the main cast, had a name, and, to my knowledge, did not die at any point in the Star Trek Canon.

The reason for that is redshirt's start trek meaning changed.The shirt color indicates what part they are in. The Main is Blue=science, Yellow=Command, Red=Security Staff + Engineering + Support Staff. The 2nd most main is same thing but with yellow and red switched around. What it really is is death for support staff and security (engineering doesn't normally die)

Why isn't How Star Trek Should Have Ended on this page? They make a deliberate reference to the Red Shirt Curse when Kirk orders every single crew member wearing a red shirt jettisoned in order to try to escape the black hole.

In Kung Fu Panda 2, Master Thundering Rhino is killed in the first minutes by Lord Shen's weapon. Even though he wasn't a minor unnamed character, should he be listed as a Redshirt since he was pretty much only used to show the power of the cannon?

Moved here pending someone figuring out which of the many arguing people is right:
- The redshirt seen at the top of this page is actually a subversion. Lt. Leslie, played by Eddie Paskey, was seen in the background of over 50 episodes, and survived a number of away missions. The picture, showing the one where he didn't, gets subverted in the same episode where after his death, Eddie is seen once again walking the Enterprise hallways.
- That's a continuity error, not a subversion.
- Eddie Paskey was actually playing unnamed extras, and the name Lt. Leslie was a nickname that William Shatner gave him for the characters he played. He still fits the Red Shirt trope perfectly.
- Stuff and nonsense, mate... As a matter of fact, there was supposed to be a scene in "Obsession" (there episode the above picture is taken from) where McCoy saves Leslie's life, but it was never filmed. The background fluff says that this scene still took place, merely off-screen. I'm sorry to contradict you, but the man played by Eddie Paskey in 13 episodes following "Obsession" IS Leslie... Not to mention that Leslie appeared in several Trek novels set well after the events of "Obsession".

When I recently watched through TOS, I noticed a few recurring Red Shirts that avoided death. Leslie, even if he wasn't named and perhaps wasn't intended to be the same character, was notable enough that his 'death' was actually shocking to me. A handful of characters are remembered from the show, but a lot more were regulars.

While in the novelization they're Blue Squadron, in the movie, the X-Wing Squadron that Luke is in is Red Squadron... and if I remember, the only X-Wing Pilot to survive that Squadron is Luke. For those who mention Wedge escapes death, note, he is a Gold Squadron Member, not a Red.
So shouldn't Red Squadron be mentioned in the Live Action Movie Section for Red Shirts?
