Ok I am starting clean up on the Real Robot entry I will be adding examples that I am unsure of or need a second opinion on before I do anything to them here.

From the Patlabor heading.
  • However, the "mainline" (tanks are still king) JGSDF mecha are the bipedal Hannibal and Helldiver Labors. The military Spider Tanks seen used as a mobile command post and a specialist fire support unit.

The Star Siege entry would fit better under the Power Armor Trope

  • The HERCULANs of the Earthsiege/Starsiege/Tribes series.
    • The closest thing to a mecha in the Tribes games is the Heavy/Juggernaut armor class, and that is, at most, about 8 feet. It mentioned in the back story of either T1 or T2 that the Blood Eagles tried to use HERCs on the frontier (where the games take place), but without access "heavy quantum industry," they were incapable of maintaining them. Thus, they adopted the Tribes' powered armors instead.

Being Moved to Power Armor as Starship Troopers is famous for the use of the power armor.

  • Literary example: the mobile infantry from Starship Troopers. Unusual in that the book is rather idealistic and blatantly glorifies life as a soldier.

Either it fits or it doesn't. Anyone more familiar with Escaflowne please comment.
  • The Guymelefs from the Vision of Escaflowne probably count, though the series itself is not fully a Real Robot one. (Most of the mechs fit the trope, but not the eponymous one. It's also somewhat more idealistic than most.)

  • The Five Star Stories Clarification as no other info was really given other then sort of. Anyone familiar wit this work please speak up.

I'll try to clarify:

In Patlabor, the Spider Tanks that we see are either non-operational prototype models or seen in the second movie, a command vehicle. The two bipedal machines called the Helldiver and Hannibal form most of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces' labor fleet.

"A general rule of recognition is that if tanks are more dangerous to you than other robots, you're in a game with Real Robots." But then why invent these in first place?

...It's wrong. It's more of tanks are more dangerous than a robot...

Not true in the most "realistic" works the mechs are justified in the story as being a combination of heavy infantry/calvary, not a replacement for the MBT. See:Heavy Gear(at least the first PC game and table top)Or even in Mech Warrior were the best tanks rank are as effective as the best mechs. In the same way a tank does not make jeeps or AP Cs obsolete, the mechs are justified as fulling a different battlefield role, even if it'll never happen in real life.

We don't care about "most realistic works", we're descript "real robot genre" here. And even you said "the best tanks rank are as effective as the best mechs", not better.

Very well for the trope page. But in Heavy Gear tanks are far superior to the robots and in the Mech Warrior table tops good tanks are usually more of a pain to deal with than good mechs due to their superior range. Both of these are Canadian/US games, the inherent superiority of the robots seems to only be present in Japanese productions. It's more gaming thing in this case than a cartoon thing anyway.

By Gaming, you might mean tabletop gaming (which I have very limit experience), but definitely not video game.

I would highly recommend both heavy gear PC games, although the first has ridiculously complex controls. The second has more simplified fps like controls. The fist one definitely believed in Tank Goodness, play a rear area raid from the southern side and prepare to be raped by a tank the instant you get out of cover. If you like using lots of guided weapons and skulking about in the hills rather than charging in head first then that game for you. Although second PC game has hover tanks(light tanks?) than are pretty much cannon fodder and no awesome railgun armed tanks, and gears in space which doesn't make a lick of sense. Basically if you like the more "traditional" mecha for the sake of mecha scenario then the second PC game will be more to your liking.

(SIGH) It does not important how certain game or two potray Real Robot, the majority - many based on Real Robot anime like Gundam and Armored Trooper Votoms - still potray mech as superior weapon (but may not overwhelming better).

In other words, you can boast it in Heavy Gear entry on example list. But they aren't a general rule as you claim.

Oh. And when I play mech game, I prefer something like Another Centurys Episode and Armored Core more.
