Is there any inversion of this trope? Like, a feminine man with manly interests?
Should this trope be renamed "Manly Man with a Sensitive Streak"?
Hide / Show RepliesThat can be a redirect, but I don't see why it needs a rename. This name is shorter and the trope is thriving.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.I don't know, after looking at the name of this trope I though it was going to be about how only real men can wear the color pink because they are not as concerned with what people think of them, or about fashion and appearances. An example might be Vegeta in DBZ who is at first very bothered by wearing pink but accepts it, moves on, on eventually takes on more heroic positive aspects of manhood, such as fatherhood and public defense. This example further differentiates from this trope because Vegeta does not necessarily become more sensitive and compassionate.
A reale life example would be all the pink that permeated the NFL players' uniforms for breast cancer awareness, distinct from any code of conduct about sensitivity or whatever.
I think there could be grounds for a trope about manhood and the color pink itself, separate from any particular emotional disposition to compassion and sensitivity.
Edited by 69.172.221.4I hate this trope IRL. Stupid teenagers invoke it. And the entire premise is based on gender stereotypes and the no true scotsman.
I also hate pink.
My other signature is a Gundam. Hide / Show RepliesI'm a man, and Pink is my favorite color I like anything that ie Pink.
I don't wear pink, not because of a desire to defy or redefine gender roles or anything, but because I simply don't find it to be an appealing color to me.
I changed the picture to something more manley, if theire are any complaints you can change it back
GATTAI!!!! Hide / Show RepliesYou shouldn't have ignored the message at the top saying not to change it without starting a new image picking thread.
HodorNo, you're supposed to go into the forums and post in a thread there. That link at the top was a link to a previous multi-page discussion that had resulted in the image that was there.
HodorEvidently, Wikipedia editors disagree with the universality of this trope. In particular:
"Honestly, the whole gender section needs significant contextualization. Even though in some locations its viewed as a feminine colour, this is largely restricted to colours for infants and very young children. Pink has been a common feature in adult male clothing for a long time, and was only vaguely controversial among, well, insecure guys. Secondly, pink as a feminine colour is a distinctly Western invention, and this section implies that the whole planet thinks pink is for girls. Quite frankly, this section looks like it was written by a pre-teen."
Yeah, this isn't a good citation, but it's worth looking into, at least.
Edited by Cliche Hide / Show RepliesIt's also a relative new gender split even in the West. Prior to WW 2, pink was viewed as a shade of red and was therefore viewed as a man's colour. The 'feminine' colour was blue due its associations with the Virgin Mary. Somewhere in the 1950s, the colour association flipped to pink becoming associated with girls and blue with boys.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.I can agree with this completely. I see guys at my school everywhere wearing pink t-shirts. My dad even wears one sometimes. But in that case it's to support my breast-cancer-stricken mother.
The fuck with that dem image, i dont know the reference but everybody knows Kirby, and the caption "Real Men ARE Pink" was way better
Is there a version of this trope for male characters who aren't hyper-masculine but have no problem with the colour pink anyway?
1,000 years from now there will be no guys and no girls, just wankers.
