Does it have to be rats?

Someone recently pulled an example because it was about bugs, not rats. But the description is pretty clear that bugs would qualify, being "substituted with some similarly non-threatening and easily killed critter... Whatever the specifics, there's an area filled with small squishy things that need squishing." Bugs definitely qualify under that.

That said, if the definition is that wide, I'm not sure if there's really a trope here. Medieval RP Gs using rats as a training level seems to be a discernible trope. "Early game Mass Monster Slaughter Sidequest involves weak enemies" doesn't.
