It seems that the general consensus is that Tom was screwed over by Summer in this movie because she sent him mixed messages and would not commit to a serious relationship. I find it odd that no one call out Tom on this. To start Tom never acknowledges his true feelings for Summer until after the fight in the bar. Even after his drunk friend blurts the facts about Tom's adoration of Summer to her face Tom remains silent and does not acknowledge this truth. The whole relationship Tom believes he is trying some sly and descrete tactic to win Summer's love. He continuly acts cool and collected instead of opening up and telling Summer he is head over heels with her. I think it would have been a completely different story (maybe with a happier ending) if Tom were just able to confess to Summer that he had been smitten with her the first time he saw her in the boardroom after his drunk friend out's his crush. I came to this conclusion after Summer states how her fiance confirmed her feelings where Tom just kept on making Summer question if the feelings were mutual. I also think that this could have been an underlying reason why the were always fighting near the end. Call it unresolved intimacy tension.

I completely agree. I think what happened was largely Tom's fault. He's the one who gave mixed message while, as pointed out by his blind date, Summer told him what he was getting into from the start. It's his fault or going a long with it. I believe the consensus comes mainly from guys still emotionally stuck at the period where Tom was angry at her.

Does anyone else think that this movie is one huge shaggy dog story? Maybe it will start a trend of the Shaggy Rom Com or the Shom Com.
